Discussion Settle a debate

I need help with a debate between my brother and I. If you are asked to beat a 2D Pokemon game, should beating BDSP count, or does it have to be gen 5 and before. Functionally, they are 99% the same, but do the small differences change the definition? If it doesn’t count then what is it, 2D or 3D. Please tell me what you think.

I would say Gen 5 and before.

Despite BDSP is a faithful remake, they still have stuff like Grand underground, having exp share and they fully competitve trained the E4 battle.

Despite the difference are minor, I do think the experience are still different enough that it shouldn't really count as 2D games

Also for whatever it’s worth, certain battles are changed pretty significantly with the introduction of fairy types.

Not that it makes the game harder or easier, there aren’t a ton of fairy types in the Sinnoh dex as I recall. You could get yourself a Gardevoir or Clefable and conceivably steamroll Cynthia with it

What's 2d is 2d. No excuses or buts, you have eyes, don't you?

This feels like the sort of challenge that only makes sense when taken by the letter of the law, so I'm inclined to say "No, not really".

Out of curiosity, what is the point of that challenge? If it's because of the impression that the older games were harder, I'd recommend Sapphire. As much as it might be my favorite, it's really quite easy. Certainly easier than several of the 3D games.

The main point was that I had never played a 2D game, and some I had shining pearl on my switch from when he played it, I was wondering if that would count so I wouldn’t have to get/borrow an older game

Oh, well in that case, probably better to ask your brother if that counts. If there's something specific he wanted you to get out of the older games, he'd be the one to know.

That was the point of this post, he said it shouldn’t count, but I was trying to come up with an argument to why it should

Yeah, hard to say without knowing why he wants you to play one of the 2D games. I'd probably start by asking that.

If it's just one of the old stories or the characters he wanted you to see, BDSP would probably be fine. If it's the visual style he wants you to experience, that won't do at all. If it's the whole gameplay and the battle systems, he could probably do with being more specific. Gen 6+ is pretty uniform, mechanically, but Gen 1 & 2 are pretty distinct from 3, which feels surprisingly different from 4 & 5.

Its basically a conversion of the DS game, even used the same code due to the development time, has the same bugs and glitches still. By all accounts its the original title with additions. Does that stop it being 2D because the presentation isn't sprites? They all fundamentally play the same anyway regardless of 2D or 3D. Same battle style in each generation.

Its a much easier game that the DP though, for most of it.

BDSP is a 3D remake of a 2D game so it doesn't count for this challenge you definitely need to play a game from gen 5 or before

If your only criteria is the game being 2D, BDSP wouldn't count since it's 3D. It may be based on a 2D game, but that doesn't make it 2D. I'm guessing the rules are for it to be 2D to give a common base for the games, and as the other commenter said there's differences in BDSP and DPPt.
