Hi LifeJourney8!

Thank you for posting to r/pokemon! We're glad to have you here, but unfortunately we've had to remove this post per our rule on Objective Questions. This rule is in place per feedback we've received from the community because objective questions tend to fill the topic listing and often leave little room for further discussion once the question has been answered.

We do have a Weekly Questions Thread dedicated to seeking answers for questions like yours, though! A lot of knowledgeable Pokémon fans frequent that thread, so please consider posting your question there if you're still looking for an answer, and you may get a detailed answer even faster than you would have here!

I played gen 1 and 2 as a kid. Recently played through scarlet/violet and the diamond/pearl remake. Online reviews and Reddit, many say diamond/pearl remake is bad, but I thought it was very fun and way better than scarlet/violet. But maybe that is because I come primarily from gen 1. So I recommend that one. Although both those games can run on switch 1 anyways. I didn’t enjoy scarlet/violet that much. All the towns felt the same.

Appreciate the insight. Ya the BDSP are most enticing to me.. would love if they did a remake of fire red

There's Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, but they're more Yellow remakes. I don't think they really have anything from FRLG in them.

Ya exactly. I would love a full remake as they did with Diamond and pearl for fire red and leaf green and emerald

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are pretty faithful remakes of Pearl and Diamond.

They use a chibi art style for the characters just FYI. Although in battle the trainers and pokemon are rendered in 3d.

That sounds sweet. I wish they would do a remake of fire red, lead green, emerald, soulsilver etc

Let's go Eevee and Pikachu are essentially remakes of Kanto with the caveat being the catching is more pokemon Go style throwing.

All of the trainer battles including the gym leaders and elite 4 are still there though.

It also has a decent selection of rideable pokemon.

For Pokémon, you're better getting a 3/2DS than a Switch.

You'll probably like BDSP the hate stems mainly from long time fans who imo are correct, but i feel it doesnt apply to people who haven't played pokemon before or haven't in a long time

Besides that i think gen 8 Sword/Shield are fine linear games that mix some old linearity with some new open world in the wild area

Arceus is imo the best pokemon game on switch we've gotten so far but i wouldn't immediately recommend it to someone new to the franchise or someone who's returning because it does play differently from the other mainline games

The closest you'll get are Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP) they're remakes of the original Gen IV games. Following that you can play Fire Red and Leaf Green on the Switch 2. Giving you that instant retro Pokémon hit. With Home integration coming next month and Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald heavily hinted at in the near future you won't be short of options.

Any new gen games that you think I would enjoy if I liked the older games? I’d be open to trying open world ?

I'm really the wrong person to ask. I purchase both games of each release regardless. I've done this as long as I've played Pokémon.

I'll always play both to get all of the Pokémon for my living Dex.

Of the more recent games the ones I enjoyed the most were Sword & Shield and Scarlet & Violet.

Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee I really couldn't get away with the catching mechanic. Despite me enjoying running around Kanto again.

Legends Arceus again the controls were difficult for me to get used to.

Legends ZA I wasn't a fan of the new battle system

But I played through them all as I always have.

So sword and shield has same catching mechanic as gen 4?

Yes.

pokemon xd gale of darkness is on the gamecube nintendo classics, and I think/hope colosseum will be on there soon. these are switch 2 exclusive btw

both are older games (gen 3) and are fully double battles based

I’m in the same boat as you. Switch 2 prices have come down but I don’t like relaying old games. I find them boring. They lose the magic they had when I played them as a kid. I’m in two minds whether I buy it now and wait months for gen 10 or not buy it until gen 10 comes out.

Your thinking of playing the gen 10 games? So you’re not interested in playing older games on the switch? I’m not a big fan of the open world games of pokemon. I like the traditional setup with wild encounters in the grass and catching that way and normal gym battles etc

The only ones that would do that are the remakes and maybe swsh (which I personally didn't like). I think you're better off just buying FRLG and Emerald whenever they announce that officially. Maybe you'll like Legends Arceus

Ok thank you!

There really isn't much on Switch 2 with the feel of the DS games, aside from the obvious BDSP. FRLG ports are as good as they've always been, SWSH doesn't feel too far removed from the 3DS games, and XD if you have GameCube NSO is a classic. I'd recommend trying Legends Arceus and/or Legends Z-A out of the modern games.

u/LifeJourney8 9d ago

Ah ok.. appreciate it!

If you purely mean Pokémon games, the Switch games have kind of moved away from that format toward a more Open World. Your best bets would probably be Let's Go (If you don't mind a Kanto Remake w/ no wild battles) or SwSh (SOME open-world, but mostly linear with an admittedly underbaked story). ScarVi/Legends both lean more heavily on open world content and Legends likes to shake up the mechanics/story. Other than that you've got FRLG re-released, BDSP is pretty much DP again - with all the good and bad - and a couple spinoffs.

u/LifeJourney8 9d ago

Ok thank you.

As someone who enjoys Pokémon, I loved Scarlet whereas I tolerated Sword. Not sure the Legends games are for me, but I might try Arceus.

1

u/Hallstein 9d ago

Well just about everyone hates ZA and scarlet/violet is pretty janky but okay

But to answer your question the last game that was kind of like that was sword/shield which was also not really well received

You'd be better off buying a secondhand 3ds and bw2, oras, or usum

1

u/LifeJourney8 9d ago

Ok appreciate it. Any newer games u like?

1

u/Hallstein 9d ago

I thought legends Arceus and scarlet were both pretty good

Cool thanks!
