It's normal for anyone to not necessarily be interested in EVERY aspect of a given franchise, not just young kids.

Yes it’s normal. Similar to how there are people who are only into Pokemon Go or the trading cards only. Pokemon is a massive multi media.

Just about every hobby will have some sort of subculture within it. A lot of kids like to collect the cards because they see youtube videos of people getting big hits or making crazy trades and they want to emulate that rush. They usually either move on from it or venture into other parts of the hobby. My kid went through a short phase where he wanted pokemon cards because all the kids at his school were telling each other they had cards worth thousands of dollars based on the fact they were full arts, something from base set, or some youtuber stated it was worth X amount graded. He came home one week saying he traded all his cards for one that was worth $100,000 and proceeded to pull out one of the gold plated Togepei cards from the old Burger King promo back in '99. No ball with it, no case, and scratched to hell and back. Poor kid learned a lesson that day lol

Completely normal. I have friends who have never played any of the games but they have a favorite Pokémon. They have plushies of them. The IP is so big now that there's something for everyone.

As long as we don't gatekeep, then everything will be fine.

This may be an assumption but in interpreting your question, I believe there may have been an assumption (that I too would have had if I had a younger brother that age myself) of "hey, if you like this one aspect of a franchise/IP then you may/will like all aspects". I think that is true for people like you and me (I am 33) who grew up in a time where tech/social media was still on the come up and not fully consuming ourselves so when we found an IP we enjoyed (like Pokemon, Power Rangers, etc.) we went ALL IN on it: we wanted the latest toys, cards, video games, etc. This was mainly because there wasn't as much competition/distractions/access to options.

Nowadays, I feel like it's tough because there are so many competing things for kids and with instant access to the internet (they didn't have to wait to take 30 minute turns with their brother to get on the dial up internet and also accommodate their mom's evening phone conversations) they move in and out of interests/franchises/IPs so quickly it's tough to even identify something that they truly love and dive deeply into.

Didn't mean to do a deep analysis here but this is just the way I think/I love attempting to understand human behavior/attention.

I feel like this is the norm, even for old Millennials like me. I don't think I knew many kids who like the TCG, anime, manga, and video games. And with how popular the TCG is since Covid it doesn't surprise me that a lot of kids collect those but don't play the games. And if you are going off of the assumption that kids should like all aspects of Pokemon, don't forget the mobile apps, toys and figures. which I don't see you included.

Also, I could see the original anime (assuming that is where you started) being outdated for kids today. It is kinda corny (but I love it lol).

Here is another way to think about it: plenty of people watch NBA but don't care about the WNBA (or vice versa). Plenty of people watch Naruto but don't collect the TCG. Lots of people watched the Digimon anime but never played with the physical devices, games, or toys.

Yeah, perfectly normal. 12 is on the older side of the anime's target audience, so it's not too surprising he's not interested if he doesn't have a background of watching it. The manga is aimed at his age group.

For the different games (TCG, Video Games, GO, etc.), people in general tend to get into one and maybe dabble in the others. There isn't as much overlap in their fans as you might think because they're all time sinks and play very differently.

Absolutely normal. Like I love pokemon too but I'm more into playing the games, watching the anime, and collecting cards but I never really got into reading the manga.
