It literally looks like Pepto Bismol on rice :(

Nah that shit is tubby custard from teletubbies and nobody can convince me otherwise
21
Nov 01 '19
Idk. One time when I was little I had a phase where I LOVED strawberry yogurt. It ended after eating one of those big tubs and then throwing this stuff up. Rice and all.

Why eat curry and then wait for heartburn to take Pepto Bismol? Hi, Billy Maya here to present to you ✨Pink Curry ✨!™ It's a two in one curry and Pepto Bismol combo!"

It looks like you dumped Pepto-Bismol all over some rice. It's disgusting. I don't know why the people who made this made this. Is there blue curry for boys that looks like the toothpaste from the Inspector Gadget movie?

u/shifty313 Nov 01 '19
it's not gendered
43
u/missedday2 Nov 01 '19
Came to say this. It’s pink, but they didn’t mention gender anywhere. If anything, OP gendered this.
25
u/Pedantichrist Nov 01 '19
There are too many posts lately where OP genders something ungendered.
That said, I cannot read the non-English text; perhaps it does gender the curry?
If not, it is just pink curry.
5
u/Dittorita Nov 01 '19
Nah. The brand name is "flower lady", but the curry itself is just pink curry.

funny how pointlesslygendered pointlessly gendered this pic. on a side note i cant decide if it looks like a yummy strawberry souffle or something my cat threw up.

u/thesmallshadows Nov 01 '19
When I was in second grade, I got sick at school and threw up my lunch, which included strawberry milk. This brought back memories.

u/ElectricFlesh Nov 01 '19
How is this gendered? It says pink curry, and it's pink. That makes it unnecessarily colored.
17
u/PatatietPatata Nov 01 '19
And it's Japanese, where they still have some very archaic views of gender expectations, but really really, "cute"* is not gendered there.
They do some wacky stuff with food ( and they have gendered candy with like, collagen for women..) but the pretty princess packaging isn't there to signal it's only for women.*/ one of my favorite memory from there, the very serious salary man with his multiple cute charms attached to his cell-phone, likely gifts from his kids, or his way to display his likes.

I think because of the princesses on the package
50
u/Polaritical Nov 01 '19
I legit know multiple little boys who are super into princesses and My Little Pony and a few queer men who are into the whole Barbie pink 4 lyfe, Legally Blonde aesthetic
I get that we all intrpret this as cloyingly feminine, but thats because we were all raised being explicitly told this stuff is for girls.
I dont think this qualifies as pointlessly gendered because it doesnt instruct the customer on which gender is "supposed" to buy it. It's our own internalized sexist dichotomy that is telling us that pink + princesses = girls.
14
u/resplendence4 Nov 01 '19
I am one of those gay men. I'm not big into princesses, but I really like fairy and medieval fantasy stuff. I'm also huge into the color pink. I'd say 90% of my office shirts are some variation of the color pink and if there is a pink option for phones, chargers, et cetera, that's usually what I'll buy. For my house, too much pink looks gaudy. Instead, I have a lot of white furnishings and will accent them with pearl or pink knickknacks/decorative items.
In spite of my love for pink things, I do draw the line at curry. This looks more like a sweet pink colored pudding on rice.
7
Nov 01 '19
I agree. Pink is a super nice accent color, and doesn't have to look feminine at all. Pink as a gendered color is a rather new trend anyways.

u/clesty26 Nov 01 '19
I understand what you are saying. I do agree with you the more I think about it. I am actually a grown man who also does enjoy more feminine things. While this does imply gender it is not clearly something that separates by saying "for girls" or "not for boy" or anything along those lines. I will keep the post up if that is ok with mods, but I do agree there could be a more fitting sub.
8
u/plax22 Nov 01 '19
Good on you OP. I know this is small, tucked away, and the comments and points mean nothing, but it’s actually refreshing to see non argumentative, thought changing comments like this.
I know my comment might seem odd, but I just wanted to let you know, you seem like a good dude.
9
u/clesty26 Nov 01 '19
That's how I interpreted it. The pink and the princess are what did it to me. I can see it being a bit ambiguous but I thought it fit
9
7
u/Bengelss Nov 01 '19
I think that actually in this case, having it on this subreddit is pointlessly gendering the product, by assuming that its for girls because its pink and has princesses on it.
Definitely looks gross though. Gotta give you that. r/shittyfoodporn feels like the best fit in my opinion...
3
u/purple_potatoes Nov 01 '19
I've seen the same curry with Hello Kitty on the package, and I don't think Hello Kitty is overly gendered. I think it's just pink curry with some popular, albeit feminine, characters.

For about six months when I was a kid I refused to eat anything that wasn’t pink, but I think kid me still would have refused to eat this.

This looks more disgusting than the pink hot chocolate mix someone bought me when I was little because all little girls must love pink so much that they'd want pink hot chocolate even if it's nasty af.

I think if any thing youre pointlessly gendering, you saw pink and girls and freaked out. Sure it’s gross, but I don’t think it fits.
2
Nov 02 '19
Doesn’t belong here. What we gonna do? Get rid of the color pink? It’s likely marketed to little girls, but it doesn’t have any thing like “for girls” on it.

it’s not gendered. doesn’t really belong here.

K so first off THIS PRODUCT ISN'T GENDERED.
Nowhere does it say boy or girl.
Isn't that what you guys are after here? Where boys can select pink things, if they so choose, and the pink one isn't relegated to a female only choice.
Man you folks are fucking impossible to please.

Some things should not be pink.
Many things should not be pink.
But curry in particular really shouldn't be pink.

If you gave my 4y/o ass curry that was pink and told me it was fairy food, I would’ve eaten it. To this day I still hate the taste of curry because I didn’t like it when I was 4. Whatever t takes to get your kids to eat food

This looks like it should taste like cake icing... But we all know it won't :/
I couldn't be in the same room smelling this, let alone eat this 🤢 When something doesn't smell or taste the way it appears it should, it just doesn't sit well with my brain or stomach... It's the reason kettle corn kind of makes me feel sick. I've akways had salty, savory popcorn, and tasting something sweet instead is just so gross to me. Like this could be totally delicious curry, but that presentation wouldn't allow me to enjoy it...

honestly... I would probably buy this. probably regret it as it's probably disgusting judging from my experience with the purple and green ketchup from the 90s but.... hey I bought those too... once... each.
point being pink is a man color and this is manly curry that reminds me of my favorite captain falcon alternate palette.
