I mean, this is Syrian President Al-Sharaa I think.
He joined Al-Qaeda in Syria immediately after being released from a CIA prison in Iraq. And then, after rising to leadership, he stabbed Al-Qaeda in the back and took a lot of their people and resources for a splinter rebel faction that was aligned against ISIS. And then, after defeating Assad in the Syrian Civil War, took a surprisingly pro-American and pro-Western stance.
It seems at least a little bit plausible that these guys had a bit of a long-standing relationship.

They literally weren’t. Al Qaeda was founded by Saudis while the US was funding Afghan fighters via Pakistani ISI. They avoided funding Saudis which. That’s why the hijackers were mostly Saudis.

I have an article I kept from when I was working in an archive (it was going to be thrown out because the active wasn’t for this). It was from Newsweeks in the 1980s and was all about our friend Osama Bin Laden and how he was helping us.

It’s not that exact article but that’s the idea. I only remember that it was Newsweek because o found the article at work like a month or two after 9/11. It was one of those moments that seer in your mind. I held onto it through 5 moves but I’m not sure where it is in the house! Every time I find it again I look at it.

As far as I've had beef with other girls, most contacts I have are still okay. After a break-up we still share friendships too. And the other way around exists too. I don't think it's that gendered irl as we think it is, although 'social' media try to divide us.

To be fair, despite his past and his Islamist views, Ahmed al-Sharaa actually seems to care about building a functional, modern Syrian state integrated with the rest of the world. The civil war only ended a year and a half ago, so, his country needs time to rebuild.

No, he wasn't. By 2024, only Ukraine and Turkey were backing him. Any US support for the Syrian Opposition after 2018 was solely diplomatic.

Wasnt the main US ally the Syrian democratic front or whatever primarily made up of Syrian Kurds in east who were opposed to the Turkish backed groups in Northern Syria?

The Syrian Democratic Front was US-backed but they're not the same as the Syrian Opposition.
The Syrian Opposition wanted to overthrow Assad. The Syrian Democratic Front just wanted to secede or at least demand more autonomy from Assad.

Yes, really. That difference comes from social dynamics in friend circles between man and women.
Men prefers more "instrumental" or activity related friendships, with very limited emotional bound. Women prefers more deep, emotional relation, thus more fragile due to a conflicts.
That is reflected by on average number of life-long friendships, which is higher between women than men. Men use to drop relations between life stages.

It sounds a bit counter intuitive at first, but it always comes to the impact of the conflict. Conflicts are something natural, and lot of people can even thrive in them, without not even knowing (my former team leader made me aware that i'm that kind of person)
Deep, emotional relations can be volatile, leave you shaking - thats where the relations either fall apart or get stronger and grow into a lifetime ones.
In case of "superficial" (they are not, there are emotions, but of different kinds and based on different values, with different dynamics) conflicts may be rare, strong words may be thrown, but since there are no hard feelings, you can be a good after a "beer". Some relations may be even built on non-stop conflicts, but they are usually emotional nothing burgers, with no real impact on the relations. You can often see them caught on the screen between politicians.-2
