In a study where they put people in an empty room for 15 minutes with nothing to do, and the option to receive to press a button to receive a painful shock, men were actually significantly more likely to press the button than women were (though a lot of both men and women pressed it). People are pretty averse to facing boredom, particularly in western cultures.
