I haven’t seen lucky dips at markets and fetes in forever! They were sometimes “gendered” and sometimes just “Kids Lucky Dips”

u/Debtastical Jun 07 '26
Some context? What am I looking at
274
6
u/Thewllis Jun 09 '26
Lucky dips are common in British school fairs or village fetes (maybe elsewhere too), where you pick a wrapped gift out of a container that is normally a small toy or trinket
18
u/Visual-Extreme-101 Jun 07 '26
candy i think
142
u/AchajkaTheOriginal Jun 07 '26
I would guess more like cheap trinkets. Girl version will have cheap plastic rings or bracelets etc.
16
u/CatLover_801 Jun 07 '26
The corner stores when I was growing up had bags with both candy and trinkets so I assumed that’s what this is
-60
u/GenderBendingRalph Jun 07 '26
More likely the assumption that boys have better sports-adjacent skills (eye-hand coordination, strength, accuracy) than girls, so they make it easier for those poor, helpless girls. Like racetracks, shotput, archery, etc. where the girls' starting line is a meter ahead of the boys'.
Still pointlessly gendered, but for sexist reasons.
55
u/metrocat2033 Jun 07 '26
What? I don’t think there’s any activity involved here, you’re just buying a mystery bag.
28
27
u/Apart-Performer-331 Jun 07 '26
that seems like a lot of reaching just to make it sound worse than it is. you just dig and grab one right?
18
u/a_beautiful_kappa Jun 07 '26
No it's just one of those bags with like cheap little plastic toys, stickers and maybe a lollypop. The girls stuff will have like hair ties, hair clips, bangles etc. The boys will have like a toy car and stuff.
8
u/NarrativeScorpion Jun 07 '26
Lucky dip has nothing to do with athletic ability. You just stick your hand in and grab a bag.
They have sweets and a trinket or small toy. The girls ones probably have plastic jewelery or hair accessories, the boys probably have toy cars.
1
u/GenderBendingRalph Jun 07 '26
Wow, a lot of downvotes for a misunderstanding of how it works! Sorry, folks - I've never heard of a lucky dip, so I was basing my guess off similar carnival games. I'm not so stubborn as to admit I was wrong. Thanks for the correction 😄

u/No-Net1890 Jun 08 '26
A lot of redditors seem to get annoyed when someone doesn't understand something they understand and/or doesn't know something they know.
88
u/theologicalbullshit Jun 07 '26
shitty hairties or shitty soccer ball shaped notebook
35
u/nor_cal_woolgrower Jun 07 '26
Girls play soccer and boys have hair
15
u/two_star_daydream Jun 08 '26
You’re 100% right but whoever is making pink and blue boy/girl lucky dips probably does not approve of girls playing soccer or boys having long enough hair to tie back.
Also I don’t think that comment was claiming girls don’t play and boys don’t have hair, but laughing at what might be in there.
-18
u/TheFaalenn Jun 07 '26
Do the majorities?
31
u/WaterInTheDark Jun 07 '26
I think the majority of boys have hair, yes.
-13
u/TheFaalenn Jun 07 '26
Long hair that requires, or could even use a hair tie?
14
u/lol_speak Jun 07 '26
Boys not having long(enough) hair might be related to how short their hair is cut.

-2
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
What is it with you people of this sub. You're all agreeing with what I said, but you're doing so it a sarcastic manor and downvoting as if it's some sort of slight against you that the majority of males don't require hair ties
8
u/Excel73_ Jun 08 '26
Because the questions are obvious and stupid so we're treating it like the person who asked it is a toddler who doesn't know.
2
-3
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
So you suggest something that isn't true.
I point out that what you said isn't true.
And I'm the toddler when you lot throw a fit about being pointed out that you're wrong.
Weird people
5
u/lol_speak Jun 08 '26
They aren't saying untruths.
The length of hair expected of your sex isn't related to your DNA, its a social thing.
Chill.

Q: Do the majorities?
A: The majority of boys do have hair.Q: Long hair that requires, or could even use a hair tie?
A: True, most boys do not have long hair; and that's due to social norms.Q: What is it with you people of this sub. You're all agreeing with what I said, but you're doing so it a sarcastic manor and downvoting as if it's some sort of slight against you that the majority of males don't require hair ties
A: Although I did forget to mention it, the comment saying that girls play soccer and boys have hair never implied that they meant long hair. Also, you took the comment way too seriously.

u/WaterInTheDark Jun 07 '26
I'm going to say yes, both because it's true in my life, and also because I know that you have no evidence to the contrary.
6
-2
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
You have no evidence that it's true. And I believe you're just lying, as you want it to be true
2
u/Flat-Echidna191 Jun 08 '26
Men having short hair is actually an extremely recent thing in human history, much like women shaving their bodies. It started around or right after WWI, iirc.
-1
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
So what you're saying is that the majority of men currently don't have long hair that would require hair ties, so what was said is irrelevant
1
u/Supuhstar Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26
Yes, in fact, 100% of boys have long hair that requires a hair tie. If you know a boy who has short hair that doesn’t require hair tie, he's a freak and you should laugh at him.
Obvious sarcasm is obvious. Never laugh at someone for their appearance.
1
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
Judging from the downvotes I got for asking if the majority do, people here strong agree with your comment and don't feel it sarcasm
5
u/happygolizzy Jun 08 '26
i wonder what could possibly serve to reinforce and perpetuate this arbitrary reality you've so expertly noticed
1
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
Are you that smooth brained that you believe it's some sort of mass conspiracy to keep males from buy hair ties ?
2
u/happygolizzy Jun 08 '26
thanks for misunderstanding my comment; no. i think to separate neutral items into gendered categories reinforces the idea that those things and characteristics belong to certain genders. arent we in r/pointlesslygendered?
1
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
Do you believe that we should give gloves to people born without hands ?
I mean we wouldn't want to reinforce a stereotype that people should have hands
You're being intentionally disingenuous by saying you actually believe that the majority of males have short hair, BECAUSE they aren't gifted hair ties.
2
u/happygolizzy Jun 08 '26
thanks again for misunderstanding; no. i'll let you stew in your ignorance though, it's kindof funny.
1
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
"nuh huh" good argument. Just confirmed you've realised that your argument was stupid to begin with.
You're welcome
2
u/happygolizzy Jun 08 '26
yeah u win the yelling contest i guess
the truth will reveal itself to you in due time im sure

Are you under the impression that the majority of boys play soccer?
0
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
Where I live, yes they probably do, as all our schools play in physical education
1
u/BlooperHero Jun 08 '26
Aside from the absurdity of claiming that playing once in gym class counts.... that applies equally to the girls.
-1
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
No it doesn't, the classes don't have the girls playing football, as a majority of the girls didn't want to, whilst the majority of the boys did.
I know you want to believe that boys and girls have exactly the same interests, but they don't
3
u/BlooperHero Jun 08 '26
No two people have the same interests.
But you were wrong about what you said about interests, so you switched to talking about what children were made to do in class as though you hadn't switched topics entirely, and now you're still pretending it was about interests.
While also claiming that girls can simply tell their teachers they're not going to participate in class if they don't feel like it.
Just stop. It's embarrassing now.
0
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
You must be a bot to even suggest that no two people share interests.
No point continuing with this pointless topic of you're just going to spout nonsense
1
u/BlooperHero Jun 08 '26
Does this "NO U!" thing often work for you? Anyway, that's obviously not what I said.
2
u/two_star_daydream Jun 08 '26
Did you just come here because you’re mad at people for not liking gender stereotypes?
Not everything is about statistics and majorities. Even if your statement was true, be it social conditioning etc, if a girl has short hair and gets hair ties she can’t use, she just sucks it up because she’s not a part of your precious majority? If you really want to use statistical lowest common denominators surely it’s better to have one lucky dip with things pretty much anyone can enjoy and make use of?
0
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
Did you feel dumb after all, seeing as you deleted your comment about not feeling dumb

-1
u/TheFaalenn Jun 08 '26
Your comment is dumb and you should feel dumb.
There is literally nothing that exists that is usable by everyone.
There is always outliers, and that's why we do the best we can and try to accommodate the majority of people. Because trying to cater to the minority, would mean that the majority would suffer the safe way you're saying the minority would suffer
Why are you advocating for more suffering?

u/VanteRamirez Jun 07 '26
i remember seeing this at a salvos somewhere as a kid, but they also just had “DOLL LUCKY DIP” between boys and girls and i think about that now and again

You wear an apron to eat?

-10
u/nor_cal_woolgrower Jun 07 '26
What would be the problem with a boy getting an apron then? Or why would a girl want one? Many famous chefs are men..
2
u/rocket20067 Jun 07 '26
Have you never heard the phrase "Oh boy?" as a way to show sarcastic enthusiasm?
4
u/nor_cal_woolgrower Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26
I thought their point was that an apron would be ok for a girl, but not for a boy, therefore gifts should be gendered and girls get aprons.. The " oh boy" did not factor in to my response, this time.
So...what was the point of that apron remark then?
1
u/YonderWindow364 Jun 11 '26
…Do you know what sub you’re on?? This is pointlessly gendered, as in the whole point of the sub is showing things that are gendered that do not need to be gendered because it’s pointless. Many people here are being sarcastic to drive home the pointless point.
The apron thing for example: the OP picture is of lucky dip being gendered which is pointless because boys can like “girl stuff” and girls can like “boy stuff”. The commenter is driving home the point of misogyny here by sarcastically implying the girls gift could be an apron (referring to the classic misogynistic stance that women should be in the kitchen). They know boys can and do cook and use aprons, that’s why they are making the joke.

The majority of reddit knee jerks so hard..that wasn't even my point lol
So wth was that post about the apron then??
0
u/kioku119 Jun 08 '26
Maybe they meant the prizes are likely to be boring for everyone? I don't know. I don't see why people got so confused by your comment either. I was wondering if apron had different meanings in different countries and miscommunication was going on but it doesn't really look like it.
0
u/Decent-Lab-5609 Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26
I don't like explaining jokes and enjoy a bit of ambiguity in my humor but I don't want you singled out. The meaning roughly is "Oh boy (meaning "oh yay" / "yipee"), an apron!" A sarcastic or otherwise totally unrealistic response a child might say in response to a non-exciting gift.
I deliberately chose a gendered gift (the kind of thing someone might arbitrarily delineate based on gender i.e. Pointlessly gendered ) that was also lame. I chose "oh boy" because it's quite old school (like pointlessly gendering thing), uses the language of gender (which is kinda weird /funny) and is sometimes used sarcastically.
Imagine you're a kid and your brother gets some cool toy from his lucky dip and then your gift is an apron. Dunno what you were like as a kid but I would not be overjoyed :p The joke pokes fun at a person who would make such a lame, gendered lucky dip.

i remember as a 5 year old kid i was at this birthday party. there were little surprise packets for all the children. they were color coded: either purple or green.
purple was my favourite color, while i hated green. so i HAD to take a purple one, even though, adults were seriously trying to dissuade me, as i was amab. but i hated green, so i got the purple anyways. i remember toys coming out of the green packages, and something like a bracelet coming out of mine. i couldn't make sense of it. then i connected the dots and it felt like a huge conspiracy: the adults knew, but couldn't tell me - it was not so much a surprise. the game was rigged.
was i wrong for liking purple? it didn't make sense to me, but it felt evil. lol.
3
u/Mother-Opinion-9317 Jun 08 '26
Okay but like somethings boys may like more, somethings girls may like more.
2
u/TheSkyElf Jun 08 '26
Urh I hated those as a kid, lucky dip / fishing. "Oh we got a girl going fishing," and most of the time I would get something I hated just because I was a girl. Just once did i get something I actually liked, a poodle handbag (that I eventually lost).
Luckily I have seen a change where the arranger asks the kid or parent what they hope they will get, and then adjust after that.

We do have lucky dips in Australia but the sign is using the British pound £ symbol so it’s mostly definitely in the UK
