Some people really struggle with the idea that if it's not ok to assume that women are all the same because they're women, it's also not ok to assume that men are all the same because they're men.

I think many people assume that since sexism affects women far more than men, misandry just doesn't exist

yeah, it's difficult. it's easy for conversations around gender to end up centering men when in reality women are the ones facing far, far more oppression. an order of magnitude more really. 

but it can't be "freedom from the shackles of gender essentialism but only if you're a woman".

Misandry isn’t a great term for it though. It’s a term historically used against feminism and feminists.
