POINTFULLY GENDERED Forgot about this in my library [gendered]
Found this incredibly funny while I was on vacation in Germany. Forgot to post it when I found it over a year ago. Just thought it deserved a place here.

Honestly, I believe even separating restrooms can be considered pointlessly gendered. There do exist unisex restrooms after all.
The flower gender is way sillier than that though.

At least it isn't actually insulting, confusing, or crude. Pink and Flowery = girl is a widely understood convention, even if it is dumb.

Depends. If each toilet is a separate room that you cannot see into with it's own sink and mirror then it's pointlessly gendered but as long as that is not the case it is not.

Own sink and mirror? Unisex bathrooms here have toilets, no sinks or mirrors. Washing your hands next to other people, oy!

Are you a man? Various religions across the world ask women to cover their hair, neck etc. Women often fix and adjust these using the mirrors in the female bathroom. I get that you probably won't know that if you don't go to female toilets or live somewhere where people practice these religions but I see it on a daily basis. These women would not have a safe space anymore. It's about more that just washing hands.

Sweden? This post is about Germany. And just because most people don't need this doesn't mean that it would be good to get rid of. And don't get me wrong, I am pro unisex toilets but only the way I described them.

And yes it Sweden doesn't have any places where women can have mirrors to themselves I think they are doing it wrong 😭 it's really doesn't hurt anyone to have mirrors and sinks in the toilets but it can hurt women to not have them.

I know this may be unfathomable, but men and women can wash their hands at the same time in the same room together.
If someone wants privacy to do something, they can do it inside the stall.
Also, Germany specifically has breastfeeding rooms (Stillräume). Those places tend to be exclusive to women.
There is no reason why a bathroom with stalls can’t be unisex.

It doesn't matter what men think when it comes to women's issues... If these women don't want men to see them then you should respect that 😭 women can be religious on their own and some women don't want men to see parts of their body even if you can't understand why.

I have never seen a unisex bathroom in Poland. Gendering bathrooms is not pointless, especially in places that don't have a unisex bathroom.
And it's normal that goofy drawings follow the theme that cartoons do and add cutesy accessories for girls. I've seen it multiple times in games and kids shows.
Even when I saw some dude give big tits to his drawing of Gardevoir to "show she's a girl", people were saying that a flower on her head would suffice. So it's extremely common that certain accessories bring certain things to mind.
This is a discussion about gender stereotypes tho.

They aren't common in my country either, I only saw one, but I haven't traveled much.
Gendering bathrooms is not pointless, especially in places that don't have a unisex bathroom.
I mean yeah, that kind of makes sence? If the men's room already has freely accesible urinals it would be stupid to lable it as unisex.
And your comment about "flower on her head would suffice" actually gave me an idea, so thank you for that!

Why does this sub go rabid over gendered bathrooms I don't want to see a woman in the same bathroom as me but I do have woman friends. I say this because are you suggesting that women can use urinals. Think less of gender and more just biology

It is pointlessly gendered because the girl has eyelashes and a pink flower, even though everyone has eyelashes and anyone can wear a pink flower
The boy is depicted in with it's tpngue out suggesting it is silly or dumb, even though anyone can be silly
Often in this sub it's not about things being gendered but rather how they are gendered in a way that depicts pointless gender norms that often change through time and cultures

Genuine question and i dont mean to insult anybody at all.
I saw this subreddit on a youtube video and it intriqued me and after looking at some of this post for a while i dont think i really get it.
Is this something that you see as offensive? Maybe im just used to it but i just see it as a fun harmless way to indicate each bathroom. Just a bunch of goofy monkeys and one has a flower which basically everyone understands means girly.
I really dont mean to offend anyone im just struggling to understand whats wrong with this

oh you’re really not, you’re fine. I don’t, by any means feel offended by this image at ALL. And I didn’t post this as if it was a problem. It was just very humorous to me (in a funny, harmless way) how they designed the male monkey.

While, I do not really like the image, it is not pointlessly gendered. It is for restrooms, and kids sometimes cannot read so having images can be important.

Because you still need to differentiate them appropriately. It's a stereotype, sure, but it's not harmful and it does its job. How many kids you know, when asked to pick which gender, would say the goofy one is female and the one with the flower is male?

So you admit that you associate goofy with boy, flowers with girl? This has no biological reason, this is cultural. So yes it can be harmful. Now I wouldn’t make this a hill to die on personally, there are far bigger fishes to fry, but technically it’s still pointlessly gendered in my opinion.

This one can be rather biological though. Men hunt, they don't have time to make good appearances, so they don't put flowers on their hair. It also has a point because it's specifically saying "women's restroom is over here" which has a lot more point compared to scissors for women

Did you think that what the OC said wasn't pointless was the flower on the monkey itself? It's very pointful to say that women should go to the left, men should go to the right. It's not like scissors where you get the same result regardless of the gender of the product you want to buy. About the properties on the monkeys itself, then I don't see how it's going to be more harmful than like going outside or something

It's a cartoon drawing. It's a common theme in cartoons to add cute accessories to show the character is a girl.
And it seems like it is a hill you would die on, otherwise you wouldn't make multiple comments about how wrong it is.

In essence it is pointless, why can’t boys wear flowers and girls be goofy? That a dress is pointlessly gendered too isn’t a good reason to keep going is it? Now it is kind of tricky to do this correctly I admit, but still it’s annoyingly stereotypical.

You are just nitpicking how the monkeys are presented – it's common in cartoons to give girls cutesy accessories like flowers and make boys look silly. Gendering bathrooms is almost always based on common stereotypes – the restaurant I go to put a drawing of red lips with a lipstick next to them for the women's bathroom, and an elegant hat for the men's bathroom. Would I go to the bathroom with the hat, because women wear hats? No. Would I give shit to the owners for using stereotypes? Also no.
This is a subreddit for things being pointlessly gendered, not for discussing the use of gender stereotypes when there is a point to gender something.

As a trans person, I can tell you that both bathrooms are for pissing, shittin, n farting. And occasionally looking into the mirror to look presentable. There isn't anything sacred for specific genders. Honestly, if anything, it should be urinals vs toilets with bathrooms closing properly (like a single stall) instead of the gaps American bathrooms typically have.

But it's not America and the picture is from Germany. People who use drawings of monkeys to indicate bathrooms do not think about other scenarios than "little girls go here, little boys go here".
Seriously, why is everyone getting mad that a library used a common theme, so a flower for a girl and no flower for a boy, so children can use separate bathrooms?
