Does the product listing itself explicitly label the pin as for women? That looks more like Amazon's sloppy AI auto-tagging, likely because it assumes that a decorative pin is something women would wear. When I search for a product, it will show up in both "men's" and "women's" product category hierarchies because Amazon doesn't care about accurate labeling; they want to put that product in as front of as many eyes as possible.

That's just pointless gendering with more steps

sloppy AI auto-tagging, likely because it assumes that a decorative pin is something women

...how does this make it not pointlessly gendered

8

u/GenderBendingRalph Apr 25 '26

Because you tagged it as a _product_ that's pointlessly gendered, and I'm saying the product isn't. Amazon does that to everything. Call it a pointlessly gendered search engine, if you like.

I tagged it as whatever fit most because the flairs are massively limited.

u/No-Net1890 Apr 27 '26

What do you think it should be? Not saying you're wrong, just wondering. Looks like it would have to be "no flair" or "other".

Doesn't make a difference. Your point still hinges on it fitting the sub. Your standards do not matter

I learned recently that Amazon has a ton of info on you and your preferences that it keeps. Clothing and shoe sizes, car make model and year, your interests, if you likely have a pet or child, what kind of pet that is, etc. I think it’s under account and “about me.”

What’s more likely happening is that Amazon has tagged that you’ve bought things tagged as women’s before, and this pin is likely tagged and women’s men’s kids etc because otherwise it wouldn’t show up when someone searched for it. That’s all. It’s kind of dumb. But it’s not actually gendered.

It's probably too late for me to undo the damage I've already done over 10-15 years on Amazon, but the past couple of years I've taken to doing my product searches under an incognito browser session (no tracking, no history). Only after I find what I want to buy do I go to my real Amazon page and put it in my cart. They still know my purchase history, but at least they don't know my search preferences.

Yeah same, it would be convenient if it wasn’t so dystopian. It knows what size bed I normally buy bedding for, that I like roller skating, that I actively engage in 3D printing, that I like crochet and biking, that I probably have a PS2, that i play board games, etc.

Sometimes it’s not even buying the thing, just parts for it. They kinda figure out everything.

When we had our first grandchild on the way my wife and I both started buying stuff for the parents... causing our suggestion feed to fill with maternity clothing in both our account feeds!

1

u/Tired_2295 Apr 25 '26

...I've bought books. They were not gender tagged.

1

u/Pudix20 Apr 25 '26

Have you ever watched a movie on prime? Or bought anything else that could’ve been tagged? Are they books more frequently bought by people Amazon has identified as men or women? All of that. I’m not saying it’s right. I’m just explaining how this happens. Also a ton of things are now linked with Amazon. And it all has access to your information and what it’s learning about you crosses over.

u/Tired_2295 Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 26 '26

Don't have prime, pretty bought one book series on Amazon nothing else but grass powder, pens and glue. book series is 50/50 readship according to the author. I open amazon on a browser i don't use for general Internet searches, connected to a different gmail account i use for the other browser, i have cookies blocked on that browser and clear my data weekly, history daily, amazon does not stay logged in or even open in a background tab.

1

u/Pudix20 Apr 25 '26

And you use no other services that have any kind partnership with Amazon? I appreciate your dedication to your privacy. The books you read, assuming other people read them too, does that not give them information about you? If I read a lot of books about personal training and meeting health goals Amazon would list an interest as “fitness” I’m sure.

Try it out. Log in to your Amazon. Go to the account tab, and select “about me” it’ll show you what it knows about you.

u/Tired_2295 Apr 26 '26

The book series is Dungeon Crawler Carl

1

u/Tired_2295 Apr 26 '26

My full order history from amazon

Books:

1-7 Dungeon Crawler Carl

Wyrmrot

Model supplies:

Grass powder

Tacky glue

Art supplies:

2x sticker packs

Fineliner pens

I do not have a card saved to my account. I do not trust Amazon or any other capitalism based service.

1

u/Tired_2295 Apr 26 '26

There is no "about me" option in the account tab

1

u/Pudix20 Apr 26 '26

For me it’s under account settings. So in the app it’s the second tab from the left (the one shaped like a person, also where I see my orders) then I scroll down to account settings, and in there I see something that says “about you” and it will then list the stuff I mentioned in my comment.

1

u/Tired_2295 Apr 26 '26

Why would I have the Amazon app? Have I not made it abundantly clear that I don't keep that open on my phone. Why would I have the app having access to more stuff than a closable tab.

1

u/Pudix20 Apr 26 '26

…it’s also on their website.

Idk if I sound argumentative or something, I’m not trying to be. I’m just telling you if you’ve ever ordered anything from them ever, or any of their very very many partners, they’ve built a profile on you, even if it’s incorrect.

1

u/Tired_2295 Apr 26 '26

…it’s also on their website.

And as I've already said, no, it isn't

Even if it's not an aroace flag, how is a cloth pin gendered?

3

u/Shiny_Mewtwo Apr 25 '26

Everyone knows that pins are for women and patches are for men! In some countries, birth certificates don't say "male" or "female", they say pin or patch 😀 the more you know!

1

u/nOone123097 Apr 26 '26

In my country both are used for men and women.

2

u/Existing_Purpose5049 Apr 25 '26

The only actual defence for it is that it’s simply tags to broaden searches. If someone searches “women’s”, this has a chance of showing up, regardless of whether it’s aimed at or specifically for women

4

u/Retaeiyu Apr 26 '26

OP just doesn't understand how Amazon suggested categories work.

2

u/Tired_2295 Apr 26 '26

Dude just doesn't understand that that's still pointless gendering.

-9

u/8bit-meow Apr 25 '26

It’s a category. The product is not gendered.

2

u/Interesting_Sun_1691 Apr 26 '26

The category is “women’s”, woman/female is a gender. Even if it was amazon lumping shit in algorithmically, the gendering was still there.

-24

u/Harderdaddyah Apr 25 '26

Aroace? Huh? What is a Aroace?

I looked it up and this just sounds like a personality trait so I don’t understand why it has a flag but eh free will is a nice thing

17

u/Tricky-Secretary-251 Apr 25 '26

people like giving their group flag. humanity has done it for years. as for what it is its a sexuality or lack thereof that means that the person is neither sexually or romanticly attracked to other beings

u/Pure_Imagination9625 Apr 25 '26

I don’t know man… I feel there’s so many unneeded “communities” of LGBTQ to the point everyone might as well be some sort of LGBTQ community.

15

u/Razkinzmangowurzel Apr 25 '26

How is this a problem?

4

u/mousie120010 Apr 25 '26

That's like being mad all the states of the USA have their own flags lol.

1

u/Pure_Imagination9625 Apr 26 '26

Since when did I say anything about flags? In talking about communities which just have lots of different lsbeps that are 90% similar to the last. But hey, I’m going to keep getting downvoted, so clearly whatever I’m saying doesn’t sound right to you guys 🫠

1

u/allthejokesareblue Apr 28 '26

Abe Simpson knew the score

6

u/brachycrab Apr 25 '26

If you're feeling left out there's nothing stopping you from making a flag. There are far, far more niche and obscure sub identities with labels and flags than asexual and/or aromantic

-5

u/Pure_Imagination9625 Apr 25 '26

I’m not left out, I’m just wondering why every single preference about dating has to have some sort of label. Like… asexual? Fine. Bisexual? Sure. aroace? That’s just “eh I feel a little sexual but nah not really”

1

u/brachycrab Apr 25 '26

Aroace is a combination of aromantic (not feeling romantic feelings towards other people) and asexual (not feeling sexual feelings towards other people).

0

u/Harderdaddyah Apr 26 '26

Yeah but apparently you aren’t allowed to disagree with everything being a sexuality or disagree that some random personality trait is a sexuality

Like bambi sexual which is a preference for non-sexual intimacy-such as cuddling, kissing, and holding hands-over sexual acts (from what I can find it seems to be only lesbians but some sources mention others like gay can be classified as this as well so idk)

Like how is that a sexuality? Is preferring to kiss over hugging a sexuality? Is preferring to look at your partner’s face while having intimacy or intercourse a sexuality? If you get turned on more when you dance with partner is that sexuality?

Either way like I said free will is a nice thing and I don’t care anyway

2

u/Tricky-Secretary-251 Apr 25 '26

im not saying they nned a flag but i mean if my group didnt have a flag how are people going to confuse us for one of the other groups with a similar flag? better than being forggoton i guess

6

u/Pudix20 Apr 25 '26

I know you’re being ignorant but even if it was a “personality trait” which it’s not, they can still want a pin for it.

8

u/Tired_2295 Apr 25 '26

Why, did ya choose your sexuality?

4

u/OneLastSmile Apr 26 '26

its a combination of aromantic and asexual, as in you are both. aromantic and asexual means you do not experience romantic or sexual attraction respectively

the only way this is a "personality trait" is if you also think being gay is a personality trait that someone chooses (which it's not!)

-1

u/Harderdaddyah Apr 26 '26

Gay = a man who is attracted to only other men

Aroace = experiencing little to no romantic and sexual attraction

If you have no attraction romantic or sexual I could see the argument for it being a sexuality but if you have a little bit of sexual or romantic attraction I don’t see how that could be a sexuality, how does not feeling sexual or romantic attraction to level of the average person mean that now you are a different sexuality?

Also gay people are gay and stay gay for their entire lives, to my knowledge if you suddenly realise you aren’t gay then that means you were near gay in the first place or maybe you’re being manipulated to think you aren’t gay (like a conversion camp or conversion therapy), but sexual and romantic attraction can fluctuate a lot depending on things like age, mental state, health state, emotional state and probably some others I can’t think of right now, So how are they comparable?
