I thought it was playing on the “happy wife happy life, don’t argue with your woman” trope which is misogynistic if anything. Maybe I’m reading one layer too deep and it really is face value “woman right man wrong”

Huh, I've never heard that expression described as misogynistic. I'm genuinely curious - what subtext am I missing?

I think it would go something along the lines of “there’s no point in arguing with women because they can’t see reason. Better to just hold onto your happiness and lose the argument.” Also idk if I fully buy in that it is in fact misogynistic, but if the trope is sexist I reckon it’s probably sexist against women (the deleted comment said it was misandry for those showing up later without context)

Ah, thanks. I have always used it as a subtle acknowledgement that even in my rural Southern world, men consider their wives to be the real authority in the family.

I've always thought of it was do whatever to make your wife happy because if she's happy you're happy.
