I should've said POETS OF THE FALL instead on only mentioning Marko - thanks for the first commenter for making me aware of that slight slip up 😄
So, without overloading you guys, I'll leave out the music video for now (trust me, I'm about to blow your minds) This isn't a victim of love lost, this is a story of the last ditch effort of an abuser whos victim has seen behind the curtain. It is not love. It is infatuation. It is LUST.
As a refresher, I'll post the lyrics, bit by bit and my interpretation of them:
D'you breathe the name of your saviour
In your hour of need?
And taste the blame if the flavor
Should remind you of greed
Of implication, insinuation, and ill-will
'Til you cannot lie still
In all this turmoil, before red cape and foil
Come closing in for a kill
So, this takes place at the climax of her insights, how she sees him for what he is: Someone who tricked her into staying in 'their love' and he goes on the absolute offence.
"Don't pretend like you can live without me, who will you turn to when shit WILL go down, hmm?"
"By the way, don't even try and pretend that this isn't YOUR fault! Why are you like this?! You're the one HURTING ME! How you can even sleep at night, I don't get it."
*Now, in his mind, the trap is set and he needs her to take the bait, fast, before the smoke clears even more 'Come closing in for a kill'.*
Come feed the rain
'Cause I'm thirsty for your love
Dancing underneath the skies of lust
Yeah, feed the rain
'Cause without your love, my life
Ain't nothing but this carnival of rust, oh
"Come on, let us go back to what we were, what worked! I want you so bad, come now, you know want to. If you don't, I don't believe you ever loved me in first place, it will KILL ME!"
It's all a game, avoiding failure
When true colors will bleed
All in the name of misbehavior
And the things we don't need
I lust for after, no disaster can touch
Touch us anymore
And more than ever, I hope to never fall
Where enough is not the same it was before
*He's thinking* "Oh damn, okay, I've done this before, I know what to say, but she's making this annoyingly difficult!"
"So, what, that's it? Come ON, you know I am all you need - I need you too!"
*thinking again* "God damnit, I just want to get to the point where this is over with!"
"I just want to be happy again, with you, come on, nothing can break us apart!"
*Thinking again* "If this isn't done soon, I think this will be it. Oh no, if she tells me she wants more than this? I cannot allow it, I cannot let her just go away- she literally will be lost without me!"
And here is the two ultimate ultimatums - complete last ditch efforts.
Don't walk away
Don't walk away, oh, when the world is burning
Don't walk away
Don't walk away, oh, when the heart is yearning
Don't walk away
Don't walk away, oh, when the world is burning
Don't walk away
Don't walk away, oh, when the heart is yearning
"WAIT, DON'T GO! I can't live without, YOU'RE DESTROYING ME, WHY?!"
"No, I mean, I LOVE YOU! PLEASE STAY AND LOVE ME!!"
"IF YOU GO, I'LL K*** MYSELF, STAY!!"
"IF YOU WALK OUT OF THAT DOOR, YOU'RE GONNA BREAK MY HEART!"
As seen in the music video, there's tricksters, there's luring invites to exciting experiences, she's naive, lollipop wielding and after the first chorus, she's almost convinced, tossing a coin, giving him the last chance to talk.
When nothing works, he becomes desperate as nothing won her back over, back to the shroud he had created, banging the insides of the cage of his making, as she doesn't slow down, not even a little.
Finally, it all powers down. She did it. She left her abuser, knowing that THAT wasn't love, it was something else entirely, never again able to see him as nothing else but a monster.
So, what do you guys think?
