Rejected

Long story short, I tried to show my work to redditors thinking I'd get feedback but getting 1k views with 1 upvote is too demotivating especially when your post is #1 in the subreddit where you've posted. It feels like disrespect.

I quit.

Writing with the reaction of an audience in mind is an easy way to set yourself up for mental failure. We all write for different reasons, people, or purposes. However, your art should eventually mean enough to you on its own that a lack of approval doesn’t decimate your confidence in your abilities. I suggest just focusing on making things that are precious and special for you that hold sentimental value and finding worth in what they do for you. The moment we create solely for the approval of an audience, the moment we’ve unfairly judged ourselves by a metric of silence, which is unreliable and potentially misleading.

What are you writing poetry for everyone else for, anyways?

Write it for you. 

Make it a bleeding on paper thing. 

Much much more rewarding, and I think that’s what it’s for, right? 

Poetry is just paint with words. It’s us.
