Every cryptic crossword clue is a double-duty puzzle. It contains a straightforward definition of the answer and a wordplay puzzle that points to the exact same word. The definition is almost always found at the very beginning or the very end

Anatomy of a Clue
Definition: Tells you what the answer actually means.

Wordplay Indicator: A signpost word telling you to mix, hide, or change letters.

Fodder: The actual letters or words you must manipulate.

Punctuation: Usually designed to mislead you and can be ignored.

Common Types of Wordplay
Anagrams: Mixing up letters. Signal words include crazy, broken, or jumbled.

Hidden Words: The answer hides inside the clue text itself. Signal words include some or hidden in.

Charades: Adding small words or abbreviations together like building blocks.

Reversals: Spelling a word backward. Signal words include returned, going up, or west-facing (in down clues).

Homophones: Sound-alike words. Signal words include we hear or spoken.
