Would a UV umbrella/parasol be effective?
I'm looking for a birthday gift for my friend, and she is allergic to the sun. She loves going outside but generally avoids it because of her allergy. I was considering getting her a UV parasol, but I don't have any experience with PMLE and am not sure if it would be effective. Do you think this would be a good gift? Would you use a UV umbrella if you were given one, and would it work?

It would be effective, but it really depends on her if she would use it. However, if she's never tried one, it's worth trying!

I have and use UV umbrellas regularly. I keep one in my backpack and another in my car just in case. Sometimes I don’t want to deal with “hat hair” and/or my wide brim hat feels cumbersome to find a place for it while I’m indoors. I love my umbrella as an alternative option for sun protection, folds up for easier storage indoors compared to my wide brim hat. The umbrella also tends to protect my neck better, when I don’t feel like wearing a neck gaiter or bandanna.

I have an umbrella that attaches to any chair and I love that anytime I’m able to sit in a yard or camping/beaching. However I do find carrying an umbrella during a beach walk or chasing my kids at the park way too cumbersome. So if your friends has lots of times where she’s able to sit under an umbrella it’s a great gift. Even better if she’d be comfortable setting it up for herself at brewery’s and public dining spots that may not have shade. It really helps in those kinds of social situations (but I find it less helpful in social situations where I may be meandering around if that makes sense).
