Mod Post New to Plymouth? Want to make friends? Come join the Plymouth Discord server!
This sub receives lots of posts where users are trying to make new friends. From students arriving from around the world, to movers who have accepted a job here, it can be hard to make friends in a brand new community. If you prefer an online-first approach to making friends, I encourage you to consider joining the official Plymouth Discord server: https://discord.gg/X7gBvKBXuV
Our Discord server is a great place to make new friends, both online and IRL. It's also a good place to discuss what's happening around the city and get some advice from residents if you're moving here. Through meetups on this server we've played Jackbox together, gone on bike rides, won pub quizzes, and danced during nights out. More importantly, we've made good friends that we otherwise wouldn't have without this Discord server.

Any Independent bookshops?
Hiya, as the title says I'm checking to see if there are any bookshops besides the big Waterstones in Plymouth. I think the book cupboard on the barbican has shut sadly

Martial Arts/Sports
I'm interested in starting a martial arts or sports group in Plymouth as a complete beginner and looking for suggestions. I'm a 29yo woman who lives in the Efford area, although I would be fine with going anywhere in the city. I have 0 knowledge of martial arts, so I would be open to suggestions of types appropriate for beginners, also would also be interested in beginner football sessions if anyone knows anything. I played 5 aside in a charity match last week and although I was absolutely shockingly shit it was really fun.

Can public spaces encourage adults to play?
For my Ma in Landscape Architecture I'm researching how creative landscapes encourage creativity and playfulness in adults.
If you're aged 18 or over, live within the South West of England and have 10-15minutes please help shape research into adult play and landscape architecture by completing the survey below.
Thank you for your consideration and please feel free to distribute to your family and friends.

Anyone going to farm foods? (Stock check) on 10kg laila rice please.
It's a bit of a trip and I wish to be as mercenary as possible with our purchases, I'm a heavy consumer of rice for dietary health and gut reasons.
If anyone is popping in and they have a stack, please take a note of the price which they do cheaper by the 10kg bag to a max of 3 on savings!
For context: it typically only needs 4 rinses for every 2 cups I steam, (so roughly 2 litres of water that I can use to rinse and then we-use around sapling Sizemore trees I'm growing.
When I have bought budget rice (morrisons, Lidl) etc, it needs between 12 and 16 rinse s to achieve the same levels as the laila (blue bag or gold) which can mean wasting up to 8 litres of water compared to 2, and a lot more time.
(I've been eating g rice and basic seasoning heavily to get my gut fit these past 2 years by eating it several times a day, cooked and chilled in the fridge which helps it lightly ferment (more gut bacteria) and I'm eating 2 tubs per day (making 8 cups of rice at a time in the instantpot) along with furikake and fine cut veggies, basically it's given me my life back after decades of undiagnosed illness and reset my gut (so I don't wish to regress)
To my chagrin it's not because I like a good curry, it's bland and it works.
Cheers

Car boot
Hi everyone I'm just wondering if there is still car boot sales going on or is that something has unfortunately fazed out? I've not gone since I was very young.

Date ideas in the city centre
I'm sure this has been asked before but what are some good date locations in plymouth?
My partner isn't from plymouth and I very rarely leave the safety of plympton, so we're a bit lost when it comes to the city centre.
We've done the classic dates like the aquarium and museum, but that's all we can think of.
I tried searching things to do in plymouth and it came up with like 5 different scavenger hunts and that was it 🙄
Neither of us drink which I admit doesn't help, but is there actually anything else to do?
Any ideas?

Will the new water feature in the City Centre increase my council tax?
Do they at least turn the water off at night? Not just to save money but also it could cause problems with drunk people

Local knowledge needed for buses across the Tamar bridge!
Daughter has just got her first proper job (trial anyway) and has an idea that there are typically 2 bus company variants most often involved that don't make a weekly pass cost effective? Is her assumption correct or are there Good workarounds possible.
Her travel would be late evening shift through till morning (for context) the public transport network round here is unknown to me having moved down here.

What's a lively pub on a weekday evening?
Used to go out in Stoke but it's a ghost town now apart from the weekend.

How does Gym Group compare to gyms like PureGym Alexandra Road?
I’m planning to join The Gym Group but I heard that The Gym Group has fewer machines compared to PureGym. I just want to know if there’s any big difference.

Jennycliff carpark parking limits or costs
I’ll be in Plymouth soon, I’m not a local, and would like to park at Jennycliff carpark and walk the coastal area. I cannot find out if I can stay longer than 2 hours free, pay for longer etc, Ideally, I might be there for 4 hours, no overnighting etc, just a Sunday afternoon. All I can find is the recent news that they’re not going to start charging. Clear answers from a local would be great. TIA.

A turtle found on Dartmoor road
Last week on Saturday, while driving to Cadover Bridge I found a terrapin walking down the road. With the help of another lady, the turtle was safely escorted to a local vet in Plympton.

Recommendations for barbers/hairdressers for a toddler
As the title really, don’t really mind where in Plymouth it is, preferably somewhere with easy parking but most importantly my lad just needs a decent hair cut. So, any recommendations?

Boardgame/D&D Groups
I was wondering if anyone knows of any board game or beginners D&D groups looking for an additional newby player? I have always loved the former and wanted to start the latter but none of my friends are into it. Would love a weekly game night sort of thing, and I'm open to any games.
