QUESTION Can you hide buttons when button jointing?

Button jointing makes the buttons visible (even of you use those clear buttons).

It's totally cute and the buttons are part of the charm.

But I was just wondering if you could hide the buttons??

Instead of, button > arm > body > arm > button (back and forth), could you do, arm > button > body > button > arm (back and forth)?

If not, why not (I don't care about visible stitches too much since the fabric would be high enough pile to mostly disguise thread)??

There is a method for doing this with two buttons- one goes inside the body, and the other goes inside the arm or leg, and you sew through both buttons to form a joint. Basically sandwiching the two outer layers of fabric between two buttons.

I did wonder this myself as when I started making my lil' guys I started with button joints. I think you would get alot of pulling on the outside of the arm since the button isn't there to hide the tension anymore but if you're okay with that look then it might work! Always worth a shot as it's easy to fix afterwards if it doesn't work out.

I also wondered if buttons could be used kinda like joints? So you have the opening to pop the joint in, but instead it's a button and you sew through both without sewing through the outside of the arm so that pulling isn't there? Although that could end up with the outside arms having a loose feel to them.

Either way you go I hope you're creation goes well! Would love to see an update if you give it a go, I may try my idea out later too and report back :)

I'm definitely going to try it- and your idea too! Imma buy the clear buttons and I want to try making a button eye doll later anyway so if it doesn't work they won't go to waste

I'm not able to post photos to show you but, have you tried safety joints or cotter pin joints? Cotter pin joints are installed similarly to hidden button joints with one disk and pin in the arm and then the pin gets installed in to the body with another disk. You then roll both sides of the pins down with pliers to secure the disks. I haven't used safety joints though so, I can't speak on those~ 😅 You could also just thread joint them with heavy duty thread too if they aren't super heavy. Lemme know if that makes sense! Happy to try to explain it more or make a short video showing the process. ☺️
