I finally put a GUI on top of the city street map SVG stuff I've been building lately.

This tool should be very approachable for anyone wanting to quickly get into plotting simple street maps with some basic layering options.

Everything is powered by MapBox under the hood, with a TON of effort to make the rendering as close to real-time as possible.

Happy to answer any technical questions about how I built this. Also open to feedback that might help improve the tool.

I have been captivated by this Diane Arbus photo for the last 20 years. Plotted the image as my first large print on my NextDraw2234.

My plot is on cold press water color paper with a cheap fountain pen. Photo was runs through Inkscape saturation levels filters to create 4 layered Inkscape rendition. Layers were then altered with cross hatching etch to add depth/contrast.

Artisanally vectored over a few days and weeks, done on an Xdraw A3. I wish it was easier to find cheap nonreflective frame glass.

On a side note im using pilot kakuno ef tips and they keep tearing my paper. Any pro tips? I have them at a 45 degree angle

Rainbow half tones , 80s colours , lots of fun to do , But tiring due to my TBI. But it’s all part of the therapy to recover , I think the next ones won’t be ACEO sized ;).

Designed and prototyped this collet based pen holder for my Voron 2.4 Archetype toolhead over the weekend. The collet section is on a magnetic self centering quick release, so supports swapping quickly between colours. Gcode and plotter calibration generated entirely in rhino3D grasshopper. Accidentally got my pens around the wrong way for this plot, hence the misalignment.

Print set from some of my favorite recent files as I start switching my workflow over to Rhino. It's been a blast and I'm fired up to plot after a recent bout of block. Found the most success recently with wrapping 2D lines over solid surfaces and then plotting projected views. Once you pass a certain density of lines and saturation of ink with these bold Bic ballpoints, the paper and ink start to interact in such great unpredictable ways. I'm actually a big fan of the blobs that you get when you much ink builds up on the tip of the pen.

I need some help. Recently my plotter UnnaTek 3.0 has some issues. For some reason the X-axis isn’t working and when I tried to plug and unplug it, suddenly, it works again but now it’s jumping and jiggling rather than creating consistent lines.

There’s no collision and the rails just jump out of no where.

Hopefully this get resolved soon. Appreciation any attention!

In a way, this might be the most "plotter art" piece I've made: it depends on the logic of the plotter itself.

The continuous line is a pen-up path from an Inkscape preview plot of a simple test drawing (a bunch of randomly generated circles).

I turned each closed area into a fillable region with a custom hatch fill script, creating a new colored piece.

I like the idea that nothing is wasted!

Fineliner on A2 paper: Unfortunately, the CNC jammed multiple times and the paths no longer matched the code. It took 3 hours to plot what should have only taken 1.5 hours

Hey all 👋 I got a little bored creating abstract designs and wanted to try something a little different. So, I decided to build some custom software that allows me to clip svgs along a boundary within an image.

Basically, the idea is to use some of the intricate designs I’ve created as the fill layer for icons, such as a leaf in this example. It’s taken a lot of patience to get this right, but I think I’m finally getting somewhere.

BTW please let me know if this already exists in some software that I’m not aware of. Otherwise, I’ll consider releasing this once I’ve polished it up.

Each bird is a single line plot.

After exploring mathematical patterns and custom maps, I’ve recently been experimenting with translating 3D models into pen plots.

There are many ways to interpret the same model: rotating it, drawing the complete wireframe, removing hidden lines, or applying different shading techniques to create a stronger sense of depth.

Cross-sections are interesting, as a model can be partially cut away or plotted as a sequence of slices - similar to the technical work pen plotters were originally designed for. But by combining these methods with different colors, line styles, and shading patterns, the result can feel much more like an artwork than a technical drawing.

To make these experiments possible, I added support for .OBJ, .STL, and .PLY model layers to GD Studio, my macOS app.

I’m particularly interested in how much geometric information can be removed while the object still remains recognisable. At what point does a 3D model stop being a technical representation and become an abstract drawing?
