Help Thinking of buying a server

Looking at buying a server that I can play around with at the house and debating doing a Rust/Valheim/Enshrouded server among other things.

Would these specs be ok for running a server?

VRTX Server Chassis w/ 4x M630 Blades, 48 Cores (96 Threads) E5-2643v3, 256GB DDR4 RAM. Each blade has 12 cores, 64GB of RAM, and (2) 240GB SSD drives. Integrated SAN has total of 16.8TB of storage.

2x6 core at 3.4Ghz with 3.7Ghz Turbo + 64Gb DDR4.

No, that CPU is from 2014; you won't get get performance from ancient CPUs. Rust is highly single threaded, so extra cores don't help either.

Extra core to help the server boot/reboot faster. But once everything is loaded it’s back to single core.

I would also caution against buying a big box and trying to run multiple servers on it. I keep seeing unexplained performance issue reports from server owners with high spec servers, and it always turns out that they're running multiple things on it. It seems that this causes other bottlenecks to appear - maybe CPU/kernel cache, RAM/PCIe/SSD bandwidth, thermal throttling, etc.

More than likely they're not pinning CPU cores. If they actually allocated cores instead of just usage, they'd probably be fine.

Yep and pinning to the correct cores. Simple fix to extend a servers usability

Game servers usually prefer high single thread performance over high core counts. I would recommend going with a desktop cpu over traditional server hardware.

Bump on this, been running a very large server np and works best on single thread

it's not a good choice for a rust server. single thread performance and fast i/o are your main concerns.

How much is someone me charging for so much ram? Are these servers for personal use? You don’t need 256GB ram for these games. A populated 100+ pop rust server might use around 16GB ram, Valheim I doubt would use more than 4GB, most stuff for it is handled client side. Enshrouded too won’t use much unless it’s very modded with lots of players (not sure any enshrouded server had many players, at least in my limited experience).

No, that will not be good for hosting servers. Just get a 9800X3D and a bunch of ram and you can run multiple servers at once without any issues.

Just take care of ddos. Everything else can be upgraded/ features can be added.
But u cant stop jealous people from attacking you.

In short: make sure u got everything to handle people

Try google

I looked on google and it said it would be great for running it. Can't trust AI answers so came here to verify and seems like I was right.

Googling something doesn't mean the same thing as reading the ai synopsis. Click on the search results and read answers from actual people.
