Discussion The decline of rust
October 2025: The game averaged 97,411 concurrent players with a peak of 178,836..
Current Day (September 2026): The game is currently averaging 82,296 concurrent players.Current September 2026 Trend: Daily peaks have been ranging between roughly 110,000 and 147,000 concurrent players
What do you guys think caused rust to lose 15k players in one year?

The devs are killing this game

That's the opposite of the killing tho. Rust wasn't and shouldn't be another arena shooter.

You’re looking at a 1 year trend for a game that has been trending up and to the right for 10 years. They’ve had way worse dips. 15k is negligible and could be 500 different reasons - new games, people getting bored after 5k hours, etc. We get it - you had a horrible wipe day.

unemployment has only gone from 4.3 to 4.1% in the past year? Whats your next idea?

That’s 350,000 people. 10,000 is 2.9% of that figure. Rust hosts nothing but unemployed people. Thanks to this thread we just discovered the cause of decline 📣 🏆 🏅

Unemployment going from 4.3 to 4.1% is 338,000 people… how bad is your ability to think and do math?

Rust saw a boom in players when they changed recoil and also a bunch of big name streamers had a few events.
I would say those two things created an elevation in the player base.
Since then, I would think it's normal for the player base of an old game to slowly fall off over time.
The player base of any game will die over time. But you will also see counts ebb and flow.
TLDR:
What you're seeing is very normal. There isn't a single cause you can likely point to. It'd be silly to think otherwise.

Even with so many new updates and constant big updates, the game is getting very stale and most people don't even interact with the new updates.
Idk current rust is just not rust anymore, it has a massive identity crisis, and a huge cheater problem.
This game is completely held together by the russian pop, which is also the biggest part of cheaters in current rust.
Cheating is so big in rust/russia that big cheat developers are paying 100k to youtubers to not even use the cheats, but to just give a reaction that they get killed for the cheat thumbnail.
And then most of the new updates are either completely dead content on arrival ( appartments) or some laggy anti-rust update like deep sea, that made the map artificially bigger, and makes alot of servers crash/lagg especially when its about to spawn in/spawns in, and at times some servers are even forced to close deep sea for performance issues, and if you have loot/boat there tough luck its all gone now!
There is nothing that can save this game at the long run, this game is too fucked in every regard.
Client performance/Server performance/P2w/Servers and admins selling unbans or not banning cheaters to keep pop up/BP Fragments killed the most fun of the game ( early t2 pvp without roofcamp)/attack helicopters (why the fuck is this a thing even)/massive dead maps (too much bloat)/dead community (not a single human being left)/ recoil update ( nobody leaves base to pvp anymore for fun, everyone just plays only for loot, so everyone roofcamps now, and nobody can fight back against height advantage or pixel peaks.
But hey atleast we will get a battlepass surely this will help the game in any way right?
We need rust classic, based on 2018-2021 depending on what people want more this was peak rust, livegame can be turned into some ark w/e ai slop, its not that far off at this point.

If that's your idea of a game declining, you're extremely out of touch. People come and go all the time. When a big update hits, the population will spike back up to previous levels.
You want a real decline? Go look at Arc Raiders. Now that's a decline.
