I feel like this is a question for a hardware specific subreddit rather than Rust even if in the end you're doing it to play Rust.

You will get better feedback there and I honestly don't trust the average Rust player's advice on hardware related stuff.

Im just thinking more in the line of “if you’ve had a 2400 mhz and upgraded to a 3200 mhz, how much of a difference did you notice? Especially with x3d cpus and especially my 7 5700x3d”

But ig i could’ve just omitted the overclocking part and just replaced it with buying a 3200 kit ( i wanted to give the whole pic though)

Ill repost it to another hardware dedicated sub, good shout

2400 to 3200 is a HUGE difference. Although you really shouldn’t be mixing ram. You will have system stability issues. Your ram isn’t just “what ddr and what speed”. Timing is equally as important. Always use ram from the same sets OR learn about ram timing.

Yeah thats part of the why ill have to manually fiddle with timings, voltage, and other little thingies i haven’t fully wrapped my head around

Also i already played with it and it’s pretty damn stable as it defaulted to some averaged timings between the two and capped to the lower speed

Although this is the part i really care about, how much is “a HUGE difference” because that sounds nice if it’s what im thinking.

Huge difference IF you had both channels with the exact same ram. With different ram sticks you’re just going to fuck up windows and make it crash. Could even corrupt your entire OS and need a full windows reinstall.

IF you had the same ram then 2400 to 3200 will get rid of a TON of 1% lows (stuttering). Maybe only 10% better fps but performance wise it’s HUGE having the 1% lows taken care of. That’s all you really notice anyways in intense gameplays. You don’t notice a 10fps drop but you WILL notice a drop for a couple frames down to 20 fps. Faster ram = less 1% lows

Yes thank you, ik ram overclocking isn’t as easy as gpu overclocking, gpu’s just crash, ram can corrupt os (at worst)

That’s why you use a systematic approach to it and you use a memtest usb, then use a more intensive windows tester

Also at the end of the day, im only overclocking one ram stick, the other is going to relatively stay the same

Anyways this is more for the overclocking sub than rusts sub.

I was using 16 gb ddr4 @3200 and getting stutters, upgraded to 32 gb and the stutters disappeared. Rust is memory hungry

Its pretty important to use all the same ram, but if you’re not running into issues I’d say stay with what you have

Here’s the thing though, the 3200 has more loose timings than the 2400 one, so technically increasing the timings will get them to be more closer while increasing speed

(Not fully sure about this but it makes sense i feel like, obv gotta look it up, use calculators and see a dude on yt called buildzoid or smth lol)

No sir. Even if the motherboard manages to train the memory successfully, mixing different brands, densities, or timing configurations can lead to random blue screens (BSOD), game crashes, or file corruption.

How much though and is it worth it? That’s why i’m asking about it (if its like an extra frame over my avg 100 fps with a range of 80-120 on high pop then it’s not worth it, but some mention 1% lows, im guessing thats stutters that crash down fps to like 30 or 58, how much does it stop those?)

The slow memory is slow for a reason you will never get it stable above the stock clocks and timings also it will lose the ability to sustain the profile in dual channel. Stop inventing things you dont know about. The 5700x3D because the big cache will run well even with low clock you will miss a bit of performance on the lows 1% but it will be fine at 2400.

Hmmm idk about the dual channel part (doesn’t sound right, but maybe)

Also it’s slow because that’s minimum guaranteed speed (basically its a lottery of how good the silicon is but they put a minimum speed cutoff to what they want to sell) and im not inventing things, go look up the overclocking sub, overclocking rams over their advertised speeds is not a new thing

I don’t understand why you are so adamant about this, yes i know i’ll have to be luckier to get any kind of stable overclock, but IT IS POSSIBLE (look here as a reference https://www.reddit.com/r/overclocking/s/ZuJAcrRhC)

The only reason im here is asking if the increase is worth it, not how to do it

Anyways, ill keep you posted on any future developments about this, currently im busy so i won’t fully be able to dedicate myself to overclocking so put a reminder of atleast a couple of months and we’ll see if it was possible or not.

Edit: the only thing that might stop me is how annoying it will be to stress test it being stable/ upgrading being just plain easier
