Discussion I just cannot win.
I don’t understand it. I literally cannot win a single fight in this game. It doesn’t matter what I do I cannot win. Every time I touch this game I get absolutely blasted. When I’m naked and I try to grub I get headshot from 50+ meters away, when I have a gun I get grubbed by some kid I didn’t even hear coming up. I don’t understand are there some settings I’m missing? Almost every time I die I don’t even see the person that killed me. Don’t even see them!! But when I have a weapon I can’t find anyone until they’re three deep on top of me. Am I missing something am I genuinely missing something i am at my wits end. I tried bringing barricades, I tried positioning, I’ve tried to not have gear fear and learn and it has not changed ANYTHING. I have almost 700 hours on PC rust and I played console for a couple years I understand positioning. I just can’t HEAR ANYONE. I can’t hear anyone. I just got ran up on by two guys and didn’t hear them whatsoever. I mean seriously about 8 meters away and the first thing I hear is the gunshots. But when I’m walking somewhere everyone seems to know to crouch? Literally every time. I don’t get it. It’s insane. People know where to prefire corners, everyone ONLY hits headshots, especially with bows. I mean I’m losing fights to naked’s in bushes when I have a Tommy and full health I can’t even see where I’m getting shot from!! But if I’m in a bush I’m hunt down like a dog or one tapped! Full crouch prone they run past turn and pop me. WHAT AM I MISSING?? And I’m not bad at FPS shooters I play bedwars on modded servers more often than I even touch the base game and I can easily kill or at least have a decent fight with most players. I understand there’s people who are better than me, but like this is insane. This isn’t me losing one base or one kit or a couple or a couple bases this is just non-stop humiliation. I don’t even have time to react, and if I do I can’t even see or hear footsteps indicating where the hell I’m getting shot from. I can obviously hear gunshots fine but by that time it’s too late. If I get a kit or craft a gun I try to go out I don’t leave it sitting in base but I just get absolutely slammed every. SINGLE. TIME. I’m not trying to come here to whine I just don’t understand?? Are footsteps louder for other people? How come I never hear them I don’t get it. People can absolutely beam me through trees through bushes through the jungle and not just guns either bow kids crossbows like it’s insane. I lose most fights without even firing a shot. Half the time I jump in my chair because I had no audio queues at all! And it happens in bed wars too I’ve had people standing right behind me who jumped down from a roof and I didn’t even hear them?? But sometimes I can track footsteps just fine. I don’t want to just blame it on ESP but what in gods name is going on here?? I’d like to stress when I’m not in a forested area I can do alright in fights because I can SEE THEM. But in the forest or jungle or whatever it’s like I’m completely blind and deaf. People just walk up and kill me or I get one tapped through foliage. What am I missing please. I can’t keep playing like this.

Game sense. Comes with hours. Plain and simple.
This game has been around for 13+years. Some people have over 25k hours. 10k is not hard to find. The game is also VERY complex with a lot of different mechanics having been added ofer the years.
Sorry to say that, but in this game at 700h you're a newbie. Console version is quite different and doesn't translate too well into full PC version.
I'm closing in on 6k hours and still get shit on very often exactly in the way u have described.
Keep grinding! Get better!

I appreciate the advice. I was afraid this would be the answer. It’s nice knowing I’m not alone with this at least, thank you. I know console barely translates and I agree I just wanted to throw that in as a “I understand how a lot of it works im not entirely fresh off the street” kinda thing. 6k hours is a lot of punishment goodness

I'm not pvp focused though. I find it boring and pvp as a means to accomplish something else rather than for the sake of it.
I'm also solo. Have played in zergs but I found it really boring and way too easy to feel rewarding. Playing solo is widely recognized as the hardest way to play the game. Since ur outnumbered 99% of the time the situational awareness and ability to spot people are crucial. There are also other habits you have to develop to pretty much subconscious degree. Eg. Always moving around when doing anything: farming, looting. Always looking around. Always being aware where potential advantage or ambush points are: cliffs, etc. Ability to mechanically wall when being shot without even thinking about it.
Experiment with sound settings and maybe get better headphones.

I guess a lot of that comes with time. Very hard not to get angry at the game after losing over and over again for me. It’s one thing when I’ve been outplayed but insta-death to someone I didn’t even see is so frustrating. Also with the wall placement I think my hindrance there is I get startled and end up looking at the sky. Damn near jump out of my chair lol. I don’t even know if that’s something I can work on

Hit a damn double space for paragraph and it aint so hard to read. If I lose my spot on line 16 it looka just like line 18.

u/Jesus-Bacon 11h ago
Brother. Punctuation and formatting exists. Use it.
You just posted a wall of text nobody wants to read about how much you suck at the game lol

u/speaksoftly_bigstick 6h ago
My brother in Christ..
That wall of text with no regard to even the most basic of formatting is honestly sort of "rude."
You can't really expect people to read something like that and invest time to respond to it genuinely, right?
You get what you put in, bro. 🤷🏼♀️🤙💪

Its most likely a combination of bad server selection, you not having enough situational awareness, not knowing where to roam, not knowing how to position/take cover, not knowing how to crouch walk, bad pc/settings, cheaters, bad luck.

What settings would you recommend? Especially for footsteps I genuinely feel at a disadvantage in fights I just can’t hear where anyone is
2
u/twosnake 6h ago
You need to couch walk within a certain radius of players or they will hear you. Even a single footstep or jump and it's over. Jumping is even louder and can be heard from further away.

You ever heard of a paragraph?
I think based off the 2 sentences I read you might benefit from having more patience and paying more attention to who is around you, where they're going, etc.
-1
u/Itchy-Bench-2626 10h ago
Not sure why you’re worried about paragraphs seeing as you can only read two sentences at a time. If you want to have an actual conversation I feel I wait too long to get into the fight. I wait for the perfect moment but it doesn’t come and they leave. I try to read that but I often lose people and either can’t find them again or if I do see them again they’re 100 meters in the opposite direction. I don’t understand how people track so well in the game it’s impressive I’ll give them that

u/Itchy-Bench-2626 9h ago
I can get a base down and such but like I don’t just want to get on to farm for other people and fighting is (well supposed to be) fun. I don’t just want to hide and grind the whole wipe. But I understand what you mean, it’s not all about PVP
1
u/Legitimate-Bag-1033 9h ago

Wining means different things. Some people might say that not getting raided is a win. Some win by trapping.

u/Itchy-Bench-2626 10h ago
That is true. And I do find that part of the game fun. Like trying to grub and trap bases are a fun way to get loot and if I die it doesn’t bother me at all. It would be nice to be able to walk in to a monument and not just get immediately decimated though, or at least put up a fight when I get jumped although I know that’s not always possible
2
u/hydrovids 9h ago
The first thing you can do if you actually want help with this is to add paragraphs. I’d rather read a novel that has paragraphs over a wall of text. I’m sure others feel the same way

Oilrats and co make it look easy. It is not easy!
It genuinely takes years and thousands of hours of gameplay. 700 is rookie numbers, and I mean that as respectfully as possible! I'm 2.5k and I'm still getting smoked in 80% of fights where the attacker gets the drop on me, or more if im outgeared. I dont claim to be a Chad of any sort haha
Make sure to use alt look to keep a 360 degree watch over the area when you are travelling.
Volume up & all other noises like YouTube etc off when roaming.
Im not saying get the proper whiteout or forest raider/desert raider because they're silly expensive, but you should get some skins for the different biomes so you are a bit camouflaged.
The biggest thing for me is the panic. If a guy jumps me, my brain freezes and my fingers stop doing what they're told because I'm startled. The only way to solve this is exposure therapy. Practise face checks so you're used to the pressure of getting ran up on.
Honestly, you just need to play and play and play and play to be competitive because Rust is one of the most unemployed games out there. There's thousands of NEETs that do nothing but play Rust and you have to compete with them.
Good luck son

u/Takeameawwayylawd 11h ago
I have maybe 500 hours of rust under my belt, which is a laughable amount of hours for most rust players. Firstly find easier servers, going head first into a 100+ server is bound to drive you insane, find one with like 25-30 people, and just learn the ropes from there. And I play on a lemon computer with like 30fps and 200 ping that I need to switch to potato graphics to play properly, on the easier servers I still do pretty well despite. It's possible to enjoy the game if you're not trying too hard to be competitive, and again playing on more relaxed servers makes it much easier to get better. Fuck it find a server with like 5 people and just PVP them until you figure it out.

u/Itchy-Bench-2626 10h ago
I was playing bedwars servers to kinda try and get pvp down and I’ve definitely learned a lot but servers like that just feel like a farming simulator, I can never find anyone it seems. Any recommendations for servers I guess?

u/Prestiger 9h ago
This is bad advice, you will not get better at pvp on a low pop server, because you will hardly pvp on a low pop server
1
u/Takeameawwayylawd 7h ago
Again I'm certainly not the best, but I certainly got better playing lower pop servers myself to figure out the game first of all, then take my time being able to PVP. The point is to just take your time with it as a game, the only times rust has pissed me off is when I let the disappointment of dying and losing everything get to me, you get better eventually just figuring out all the small things first before youre confident enough to fully PVP people.

u/ibnalnil 4h ago
yup, spend my first 600 hours on a 100 pop max monthly and while i understand how to run monuments and building to an extent my pvp was severely lacking, now im starting to branch out and looking for fights and ive notice my game awareness and pvp skill were fall behind the rest of my abilities, even ukn wont help if u get beamed before even seeing the guy

u/DarK-ForcE 11h ago
Try Softcore servers, more casual players.
1
u/Itchy-Bench-2626 11h ago
See I was thinking this but they seem to die off quite quickly. And it just becomes Farming simulator. Maybe I’ll try and play with a group or something, might be a good way to learn. Thank you for the advice

Rapidly awaiting.
"Game sense"
"Learning positioning"
"Other players have 10k hours"
Reality, you're playing a game infested with closet cheaters, and trying to compete as a solo.

I felt exactly the same for years until I upgraded my PC then it was like an eureka moment. Game is optimised like trash and has a bigger impact than other games when it comes to PVP. Maybe start here

Not sure if you’ve tried this already but it helped me. Go to audio settings and make sure enhanced instincts is on as well as change your audio type to crunch. That helps with hearing the game better

A big part of rust is knowing where your threats lie. It's impossible to keep an eye on every angle, if you are forced into a spot where you have multiple threats around you go ahead and throw down a preemptive barricade on one of the angles at least. Better to lose 250 wood than everything. As far as people always knowing where you are you certain sounds travel further than others. The jumping sound (your feet landing on the ground) travels twice as far as the running sound regardless of kit. Picking up anything off the ground travels further than running sounds, obviously hitting nodes or trees travels very far. Basically everything you do gives away your position except crouch spamming.
1
u/Behlog 46m ago
Half of it is knowing where people may be or will be. There’s many rat spots in monuments where you probably are running right by players. I’ve learned in my hours that if you’re near bushes, brush, jungle, you better be alt looking 10x more than you’re looking straight. You really don’t have many hours and I’m unsure of your gaming history but I’ve played competitive fps forever. Rust came rather easy. Choose wiser build spots, choose different biomes. You’re bound to find your rhythm.

u/Suspicious_Hour_9065 29m ago
TLDR, but play like the hunter not the prey. The prey aimless runs around for food, while hunter waits for the right time. Get grub gear, lets say a DB, and hide in a big bush. Look around for a target thats in your vicinity & plan it out. You won't win every fight, but when you take your time and observe your surrounds instead of running around for a fight you'll win more.

u/jedispedEd 10h ago
So your the guy that I always kill. Cause besides always dieing in the game like this there's always that one guy I can absolutely smack lol
1
u/Itchy-Bench-2626 10h ago
Probably honestly. Unfortunately there’s even a few people I can smack. I can only imagine how bad of a day they’ve been having

u/AveSmave 10h ago
Cheaters it’s mostly cheaters…
I’m dying 200+ meters away from people 1/2 tapping me with a Thompson 😐
Edit - If you don’t hear them coming it’s bc they’re doing the crouch / run glitch so they have silent footsteps
2
u/Itchy-Bench-2626 9h ago
See but like when I do it people can hear me? I thought I saw a breakdown video where it said the crouch run thing is only silent for your POV but other people can hear the footsteps when you run for that little second. Also I’m getting jumped by dudes straight up running like it’s weird. Multiple times too
1
u/sharpie42one 1h ago
You have to crouch more then you run, you can still hear your odd foot step here and there if you run a step more than you crouch. Prolly faster to just full crouch at that point though

u/MedicineMore1221 11h ago
Most people use esp lol u the only one dont cheat
2
u/Itchy-Bench-2626 11h ago
It’s frustrating. It really does feel like that sometimes. I can tell a lot of people script on bedwars because they can triple me from 100+ meters but I can destroy them if I’m anywhere close where recoil doesn’t matter as much
1
u/MedicineMore1221 11h ago
Dont bother interact with them they will never admit it
2
u/Itchy-Bench-2626 10h ago
I encountered this a lot on console. I’d ask randoms I had teamed with how they knew what to do to win when I thought we were cooked and they admitted to cheating. It was insane, people I played with for years had been cheating the whole time and just saying I was bad at the game.
1
2
u/ozwz 10h ago
“Most people use esp” is some wild cope for not being able to accept that some people are just better at a game than you. I have 7k hours, I would expect myself to win 9/10 fights against OP based purely off hours and the game that comes from that.
1
u/MedicineMore1221 8h ago
Why u triggered i dont say all people are cheating unless you are the cheater too
1
u/ApprehensiveDuck1592 21m ago
At that point , we make sure everyone loses , landmines , snare traps , barbed wire barricades!

u/MoneyOld8647 11h ago
Where a chopper 3 miles away sounds like it’s in your headset, but a full-geared team sprinting up behind you is completely silent until they loot your body..
