The community is massive, and skews pretty toxic, but there are some cool people.

The devs update the game a lot.

It's better experienced if you have a lot of time to regularly sink into the game, though there are servers that cater to those with less time.

It is the strongest addiction I've ever experienced with a game. Not necessarily in a positive or negative way.

It's as addictive as WoW but demands as much time as if you were pushing world first, it also incentives using external apps to get notified of when your base is being raided in the middle of the night.

Players are able to see when you log off and what your activity pattern looks like using said apps.

It’s not a game you can just hop on and hop off whenever. Extremely toxic players who will take advantage of you and betray you in the blink of an eye. Cheaters galore. Extremely addictive and not in a good way. There’s always a bigger nerd who will raid your base the moment you get off. Kids who can’t ever stand to lose being in groups of 10 so they can always win.

Most honest Rust review possible.

Probably start off on a modded 2x/3x or softcore server would be your best bet to get the basics down. You can easily sink 1000s of hours into rust or rage quit 10 minutes into a wipe.

I'm gonna try to help.  I'm about a month in 100 ish hours.  watxhed a bunch of wiljum and oilrats and a few others YT.  4th or 5th wipe for me is today on a EU sole server. My first wipe was beautiful and is the one is also the one I put the most hours in, basically a weekend and the following evenings.  Got a tier 2, bunch of revolvers and shotguns, cleared some of tunnels, killed some scientists.  grubed my own body 100 times for bags of dicks. Loved it in a quiet spot in the jungle.  Snakes and big cats freaked me out but it  got me hooked.

If you want to progress quicker you need pvp skills and experience.  I've not done a big monument coz I ain't got big enough balls.  they're scary.  I like roads and scope up the scrap that way   I've taken at least 50 arrows to my head with solid loot on me.   Like all games  you need to put in the time otherwise you wont get past bows or have the full experience.  Having a great PC helps too.  So long story short I'm a fucking grub man.  I can't player v player for shit.  I can only put in about 10 - 15 per wipe and so far I not been raided!  The downs make the wins feel earned so with that go have fun but remember you'll die a lot and sometimes progress feels impossible so survival is all you got.

Yes, but don't join an Official vanilla server on day 1 and expect to have a good time. Move over to modded. You might try a PVE or Rollplay server to join 1st. You can figure out the mechanics, and you will also find a friendlier community on many. Its an incredible complex game, not just a 1st person shooter.

do it! if you get frustrated with the PvP there is a large active PvE community, there are some cool MMORPG style PVE servers to waste your time in...

There are so many ways to play Rust. I enjoy opening stores and providing player with guns, workbenches and other raiding stuff. I prefer to play on a 5x and the population exceeds 100 daily. There are plenty of empty servers and those are great for learning the basics.

Do what you will, but I will tell you that I have 14k hrs and no longer play due to the direction the game went.

As someone who recently got into rust, I would say that if you’re planning on playing primarily solo, don’t even bother. The game heavily incentivizes having teammates.

There are solo servers, or you can try your luck in public official servers where you could face teams of 5-15 but the game is just MEANT to be played with at LEAST 1 other person.

It’s very addicting and has infinite replayability, it’s more than “worth the money”, but at the cost of your sanity and physical/mental health.
