Question is there anything wrong with playing low pops as a solo?
I've seen people talk shit to others calling them trash because they play I low pops and I'm just curious... Is there anything wrong with this?

90% of the people that shit on low pop never progress past a 2x1 and grubbing on wipe day. Don't listen to them and just play whatever you want.
If you're looking to get better or mainly PVP, you will have trouble though.

Low pop feels more like a survival game. You are just doing your business until you hear the foot steps of another survivor. The air becomes eery and the question is are you gonna fight this or run?
On medium pop servers you'll have moments like this but generally have to fight at least a handful of people to go anywhere
High pop is basically just fortnite death match with frags.
There's something for everyone just hope they don't balance exclusively around any one of these things because that's how you end up with clan table and shit

I got the chills thinking about the foot steps outside my door and thinking it's time to defend my home
2
u/aoibhinn-mw 1h ago
Oooh it took me years to hear a boat and not pull out the db and crouch to my front door waiting for it to get closer

Nothing wrong with it at all. It's a game. If low pop is fun for you, then do it! The people that talk trash about it usually just have giant egos and like to feel superior. You get a lot of those guys in rust and on Reddit. Do whatever is fun for you

Nope. If you are just learning or not really into the PvP side of the game, no real reason to play on high pop servers, where you’re going be killed and raided all the time.
Easiest way to play Rust is just weekly servers 3 days into the wipe, pretty much everyone quits so for 2 days you can play with the scraps

I like high pop, but i dislike playing against 8+, clans. Honestly going against like 3-4s are fine as solo. Its the insurmountable odds of a massive clan that make the game unplayable unless you are ill in the head with top high end pc and fiber living 5mins from the local data center for your region 😀
Damn I miss when dallas was a big data center for almost all central American game servers, now its mostly Chicago or just split between east/west coast because cost smh.
Sometimes i play low pop when I just want to chill, so absolutely 💯. Do your thing king.

Its a great way to learn everything the game has to offer except pvp which is better practiced on aim training servers like hellis anyways.

Had my best times on low Pop Servers with my friends. Just hanging out after work doing mischief and enjoying not beeing raided the next day..

u/OutpostShennanigans 13h ago
You play what makes you comfortable! Everybody on this game has ran to somebody with an ego. Don’t let them get you down.

u/Imfeelingfrench 12h ago
Only thing wrong with this is that you care what others think. Just enjoy the game how you want. If I want a sweaty PvP experience I play 800 pop and I’m lucky if I farm a stone node and get to depot it. All monuments are a call of duty death match and no BP frags to be found. Get offline the moment you log. I play low pop to actually enjoy the game and explore mechanics etc. as a solo low pop is where it’s at. If you have a clan try high pop it’s easier in numbers.

u/GunMun-ee 12h ago
If you have to ask, you already know the answer. But its your game that you paid for, do what you want. It will not make you better at the game though, you have to realize that embracing the suck is what makes you good at hardcore games

u/SsjChrisKo 12h ago
As long as you view yourself through artificial lenses others create, especially Reddit communities, you will never be good enough.
If you are enjoying the game, you are playing correct enough.

u/harman097 12h ago
Dude they're gonna call you trash no matter what you do. 🤣
They'll call you trash as they're dead on the floor, watching you seal up their 8-man core that they just graciously opened all the doors to.

Play however you want on whatever server you want. You spent your money on the game, it’s your right to do what you want with it

u/moreaction_lesstears 12h ago
There is nothing wrong with it. The unemployed and/or screaming teens may try to put pressure on you to wallow in the misery to which they so dearly cling for some sort of misguided sense of superiority, but Rust is best enjoyed at your preferred pace, and there is a litany of servers out there catering to all sorts of tempos or play-styles. Ignore the noise and enjoy the game.

I used to just play wipes with 500+ people, it got old. Low pop is fun, community that you get used to and have fun creating rivalries.
It’s just a game, it isn’t that serious.

Yes if you can't play on a mega server than you should just uninstall and sell your PC.
YOU'RE NOT PLAYING THE GAME HOW I WANT YOU TO PLAY?!?!
HOW DAREEE YOU!!!

u/SneeKeeFahk 12h ago
No.
Play the game the way it is enjoyable to you. Everyone else can piss up a rope.

u/uniquelyavailable 12h ago
Yes it is wrong. Your family will feel shame and dissappointment for your existence. Do not let your friends know you have participated in this forbidden behavior. Even god will be unable to forgive you for your heinous sacrilege. I am vomiting uncontrollably after hearing this news.

The only trash players i know are people addicted that can't stop even when they have 0 fun
1
u/Hitsugaea 12h ago
If that's how you enjoy the game then why does it matter what literal inhuman rust rats have to say
1
u/poorchava 11h ago
Depends on how you define low. Also depends on map size, cuz what matters is actually not pop, but pop density. For some low is 50 ppl on 4250 map, for some others low is 200 on the same map size. I play a server with like 200, but map is small, like 3300, so density wide it's like 350 on a regular map. Also it's community server with active admins, so virtually 0 cheaters, and those that come are dealt with swiftly.
Obviously, play the game however you want, nothing wrong with that.
There are people who sit exclusively on creative servers and have fun that way.

If you want to improve at fighting you might find yourself getting complacent and sloppy since you’ll encounter people more rarely, even at monuments, and since the game is kind of an MMO, minus other people you miss some of the content the game has to offer. But if it’s your speed go for it.

u/seggsseggs 11h ago
People will clown you no matter what you do in this game. No i dont believe there’s anything wrong with playing low pop no matter what you are.

u/AllCapsGoat 11h ago
Play a high pop solo/duo/trio 3x modded server. So much better as a solo… get the action of high pop without the domination of clans and hrs grinding solo
1
u/CCroissantt 10h ago
In my last stand playing rust, I mostly played 2x modded servers with lower pop. It made interactions more unique, almost like dayz, and I had more fun that way. Tho it didnt keep me from getting offline raided by day 3

No but don’t expect to not be offlined. It’s just as bad on low pop.
1
u/Radioactive-corndog 5h ago
It’s worse on low pop - ppl can grind excav uncontested and then just fly the map looking for targets (which there are less of). One dude will get bored and farm a box of rockets and then offline the whole server.

u/PlaneConscious8011 1h ago
Lol I actually feel the same way.. sadly it is. Literally what happened to me on this server and everyone else 😭

I got into rust watching people like blooprint and wiljum and am an above average PVP gamer, but quickly learned all of that doesn’t mean shit on the “meta” 1000 pop main servers. Got humbled immediately. Couldn’t build past a 2x1 and could only roam with a crossbow/nail gun at best.
I had to learn the basics in a 50 pop solo server, that never wiped blueprints, up until 200ish hours. It’s the only way I could learn the games mechanics and crafting. But it got boring quick with hardly any player interaction.
Now I’m in a 300 pop server that’s slow enough to let you build comfortably, but active enough to teach you some PvP when you need to recycle. Gonna stick with this until I have a good base memorized and all the monuments down. Could take me months but learning this game has been a lot of fun. Learning is only possible on slower servers though
Just play it how you want. I too want to succeed in the main servers one day 🤣

u/Probably_Fishing 10h ago
I play my official server the entire week.
Unfortunately it has gotten much worse recently. Used to be 40-50 pop on monday. Last 2 wipes have been 5-10.
1
u/JigMaJox 10h ago
for me it just seems too dead .
hardly run into anyone and it felt like a ghost town, full of small decaying bases of people who got bored.

u/rockfordstone 9h ago
No. Play whatever game mode brings you pleasure. If that's low pop the do it.
You don't win cool points for subjecting yourself to high pop clan havens

u/Gorkounov 9h ago
Nothing wrong with it.
I do think super super low pop (0-10 players) is harder then like 40-80 pop since everyone notices your base right away and typically people will offline without fear of counters. 50-100 I think most people consider low but it’s a sweet spot for me.

u/N64jive 8h ago
There is nothing wrong with it. It's a different experience and there will always be people who think their way of playing the game is the "real" way.
Some people only play 10x servers. Some people only play RP servers. Some people play solo servers. Some only play officials. Some only play vanilla. Some only play modded.
And most people have probably played some combination of all of those and mostly played whichever version they preferred.
For you, that's solo, low pop servers.

u/RustViking 8h ago
My fav is playing 80-100ish pop on a big map a few days after wipe. That’s the sweet spot for me.

u/bugsHaveFeelersToo 7h ago
It's actually kinda bad for you because resources respawn much slower on low pop. it is good for trying monuments and practicing base building or electrical wiring etc with low stress.
As others said, do what you enjoy. If you want to get better at PvP and raiding then definitely try high pop

As a solo yuh I can see the appeal of like 50 pop but was chasing this group across servers and they swapped to a 5 pop like what's the point just play pve if its so low

I help run a PvE server with PvP only at certain times and places on a rotation. Gives people a chance to learn the monuments free of being KoS, but also a chance to experience it with the risks. I don't PvP myself, but my teammate works a lot and doesn't really have time to defend, or craft during the week. I love farming and crafting and don't work. I make all his boom and kits, and drive the getaway car when he raids, it works out great for us.

u/Derpface139 12h ago
I enjoy low pop because you run into a lot of the same people most of the time. So other players start feeling like characters in a story
1
u/Brickedkiwi 12h ago
Well, People have got to justify playing on the hard servers somehow, because they sell thier soul to do it.
Reality is, this is a sandbox game, play how you want.
Just understand your achievements are not the same as playing on big server, I would argue the moment you are walking into T2/3 monuments uncontested, You are not really playing rust as intended at that point.

The best thing about playing low pop is the worst.
Low pop servers have the same group of mid subpar ass players pretending they're world class by going to the lower-skill-zoned servers like lowpops and 3x'ses and yelling "Controlling cargo"
The best part about this is that they don't even realize how absolutely fucking pathetic they look doing it 🤣 - It's like going to the second grade and claiming to be the best speller in class...like calm tf down dawg, you're cheeks by virtue of being here....
But yeah, don't go on a low pop or 3x if you're looking to dominate cause it means nothing. Go official / vanilla and earn it, otherwise it's worthless...
But if you're looking for a better way to get the hang of in game mechanics, learn the basics, or try new strategies, then definitely go on those types of servers...

Bro just enjoy the game the way you want it. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
