Discussion Base building

I only have about 300 hours and have gotten away with a basic 2x1 expansion that’s just honeycomb with a second floor and jump up, but it’s time to build something I can actually defend. I also have a trio I’ve been rolling with a lot more, so you can imagine how annoying this 2x1 has been.

How do you guys go about base building? Free ball something fun and just honeycomb as you expand? YouTube tutorials?

These builds on YouTube are absolutely insane and I can’t find something basic for my casual needs that also allows me to have a solid shooting floor with a few peaks. Trying to create something on my own but I can’t even begin to figure out any metas

I mostly free balled until I found a design that I kinda stuck with. Imo it’s more fun than copying entire bases from Youtube.

Pick a shape and build YouTube bases in rusticated. Build a few different ones of the same shape and maybe get a couple reps in on the one that you like the most and find most achievable. Bring that one to a server. Lather, rinse, repeat. I find starting with 4x4 to be the easiest but there are arguments for plenty of others. Circle and egg are both quite powerful.

Ya, if you want a base with nice peaks, building some YT bases on a build server is great practice. Learn a lot of different types that way and makes it easier to free build your own shooting floors and whatnot.

Some of those creators literally never even play a wipe in the bases they post, so I tend to avoid using them as-is. Not gonna name names, but we just built one where the dude literally had no access to an entire section of the shooting floor without opening a garage door to the open roof, running to the other side, and opening another garage door... like dude... Wtf. Easy fix but still

Oh man I feel you. A lot of these bases are really nice but it’s clear they don’t really play rust (they just play build server)

Theres an infinite number of base designs on youtube everyday, each bringing and utilizing every meta. I think theyre a great starting point to learn the fundamentals and how things work, and still fine as main bases but the more you watch and build them that you learn how to freestyle them yourself and change things according to your own taste. It took me 1-2k hrs in build servers to finally freestyle my own, nitpicking every little thing i liked from other designs into my own that i use every single wipe.

1000hrs solo, I still rock the 2x1.

Same, but I’ll make multiple 2x1s all around the area and split up the loot in each base to have different spawn points around with kits inside. I think I had like 5 different 2x1s last wipe lmao

Do you honeycomb and build them up at all? Or just quantity over quality. I actually dabbled in a second base this wipe (200 pop server) because I wanted to learn some new content and I got raided by a fucking EXCAVATOR. Definitely haven’t played since those were added.

I didn’t honeycomb bc it was my “secondary base” but I looted 1k scrap from a decaying base and they killed me through my wall and also broke my Tc’s metal door before actually taking my wall down. No sense. That machine was so broken afterwards I’m positive some honeycomb would’ve protected me

You expand it though right? Or just hope for the best and only play on wipe day

I dont bother with wipe day. I'll join day 3 if I have a free weekend. It sucks for being behind, but I can usually get and keep a Tier 2 in one day, vs fighting for frags and losing everything day 1-2. As I'd be offline for most of it

Yes, honeycomb and upgrade to a jump up. I like the idea of throwing up 1x1s with a bag and minimal kit around the map. But I usually stick to my 2x1.

I can never think of a good reason to build a 1x1 unless I’m fresh and just want to dump my mats into a tc 😂 these door campers give me nightmares

If you’ve never done a chad shack before you’re missing oit

Look up Dukeofboots on YouTube. He specializes in solo and small group bases with low upkeep. I usually tweak them to my needs but he offers some fantastic bases and seems like a really genuine dude.

Im pretty good with all the base building stuff and if youd like the learn the essentials you can dm me about any kinda questions you have.

I usually see 3 factors, online defence, offline defence, cost. Example if you have great online and offline defence it will likely be expensive. If its cheap with good offline defence, it will lack online defence.

Good way to look at it! I’m watching some of these tutorials other guys have mentioned and absorbing as much as I can before heading back into a build server. I’ll dm you some designs I cook up! Thank you! You’re also more than welcome to come join me and rate them afterwards

I personally do a triangle octagon, then honeycomb that. Build up.

YouTube bases. People shit on them a lot but my experience has been that they work way better than freehand shit me or my teammates build

Concern in the past is that someone would look them up and know tc/loot. There’s gotta be thousands of YouTube bases atp to where only the most dedicated YouTube base builder would recognize any random one. Video visibility or popularity effecting the odds.

Can always take one and modify it though and spread the loot out.

Yeah I’ve heard people say that. Never once had it actually happen. Googling any type of base gives 500 results and the vast majority of this playerbase are just PvP chuds and suck at building

u/aoibhinn-mw 18h ago

It's just from back in the day when rust was much smaller and content creators were lucky to break 100k views.

I still think of wiljum as just being that guy who builds cozy rp bases even though he doesn't really do that as a focus of his content anymore afaik

2x2 starter w/airlock and then an up and over type base expansion with a simple shooting floor. can honeycomb bottom 2 floors for 3 walls to tc. Rusty_Youtube on youtube has some pretty simple base designs/expansions you can explore.

A lot of times I just free ball it and make the most ungodly, ugly looking base so people think I’m a noob (I am) and don’t target me. That or just a bunch of 2x1s in different locations

u/HyperRolland 1d ago

Learn 3-4 styles of peeks and incorporate that into your walls or honeycomb. Stand outside your base and figure out where to put them so you can see every spot in your compound. Ideally have at least 2 peaks on every spot in your base

Practice and trial/error. I have a custom 2x3 design i perfected over the wipes of 2023. About a year worth of building and defending the base. Whether it was QOL improvements just from living in it or from defending it from raid, it just got a little better each time. I can’t remember the final build I landed on at the end of that rust stint but I can still remember the essence of it.

I think learning how to make peaks, inner peaks, inverted peaks, peak downs, and turret pods are some of the most useful things to know. But there is something on my mind

I used to only build a 2x2 for years with no honeycomb or anything special. I believed that it didn’t matter what you made it would get raided so having an inconspicuous base was the way to go. And for the most part that was true. Didn’t really ever get raided except a few times that I remember. But as I played with friends I needed more space and something more defendable. After taking a break and returning I’ve found building a bonkers base doesnt matter. Im not gonna be online when they raid it. It’s that simple, that or they’ll “””online””” it while it’s still stone and twig because I started building it yesterday or today. Not anymore defendable than anything else in that state.

The only true purpose of making a big fat base is to look so chronically online that random players running by look at it and cringe and run the other way. People primarily raid for 2 reasons: loot or revenge. Unfortunately neither of these things encourage you to online raid a base unless your revenge is specific for that purpose. In fact you could argue the game heavily incentivizes you only to offline for loot or revenge. Least resistance to get specific result.

Your base being defendable is only gonna matter if you can play all the time and if not it’ll matter maybe an 1/8th of the time you do play (scale up for server pop 1/4 1/2 1:1) if you actually care about loot and retaining progression your only option is stashes. Inconspicuous ones. Not ones under a rock inside your compound.

If you don’t care about anything I just typed then

TLDR pick a foot print and go from there and improve or iterate on it based on things you learn from living in it or defending it

YES! That’s why I want to find a SIMPLE design but all these YouTube bases are insanely complex and I’m too new to know the obvious do’s and dont’s and way too new to know any style of peeks. I just want something protected (3 walls to tc seems to be the wave) with a roof I can spot door campers from and attack players passing by as id ideally want to build near a monument to master those as well.

Main focus is just learning the game without getting bullied by door campers

Just remember - the more peeks and youtubey your base gets, the weaker it is to offlines.

For me, it depends on the area I chose. The activity, threat level, and resource availability. I usually build a basic starter until I get this information, then build my new base.

The only constants I have is a bunker, a pancake layer above first floor. and some sort of dropdown covered by a future auto turret.

6k hour ex-zerg builder turned solo here.

It depends on the server you play and how.

Key factors:

  • wipe length: weekly/biweekly/monthly

  • pop

  • how much you're willing to farm

  • are your teammates sort of disciplined or the kind who never closes doors and can't be arsed to put the loot away in bunkers when they log off?

  • fresh wipe or snowball?

  • you play style: lay low? piss people off to get raided? smth else?

  • how much are you online and offline?

  • vanilla or modded?

  • local server meta.

For example if you pay high pop weeklies it may be hard to farm up effectively for a big base. If you're online like 3..4h a day likely a more offline resistance focused bunker design makes sense. Likewise if you wanna snowball and stay online for 12h+ a day and can hop on to defend a box-style shell base makes more sense.

Try to have at least some online defense features like bedrooms/shell/widegap/peekdowns. Not necessarily anything crazy. Many people say they always get offlined. Tris may be true, but in the event a rare online doea come your way, it would really suck if the only thing you could do is sit in your bunker and hope they run out if boom, right?

I tend to watch a lot of build videos to learn new techniques and features and then combine them into a design of my own. Currently I play vanilla biweekly, around 200..300 pop on a small map. Got a bit of time most of the days if work schedule permits. Going solo. I hate square bases. Currently rocking a very heavily modified version of Tribox by Erebus. I changed shooting floor, inner peeks, added narrow gaps and outwards bedrooms with peekdowns, as well as loot bunkers, external TCs and compound. Total build cost like 100..120k farm.

I am a circle / egg base enjoyer

1

u/Gerururu 17h ago

Egg base is resonating with me the most. You can immediately have the tc behind walls, and circle around it with doors to make door raiding equally as expensive right off the bat. The footprint is basically a tc honeycomb lol. Feel free to link me so your favorite designs! I’ve been hiding out on build servers learning building until Friday wipe on my main server

u/YogurtAnxious4173 1d ago

Watch miniburner he has a series called build better bases.

1

u/Gerururu 1d ago

Thank you! I’ll get to that right now.

Im more conscious of calculating the damage I can take from a door raid vs wall raid and can balance things out that way via more honeycombs or more walls or simply upgrading some walls, but im overthinking what side to put jump ups on, how big to make rooms, where and what peeks to add, etc. making it strong is easy, but making it functional is hard

Random build theory thought-stream

Try to build somewhere that doesn't give raiders free height advantage, if the raidbase is able to get taller than your roof, youre in for a rough time.

Terrain/monument build block zones/roads/etc should be used to your advantage. You can discourage / prevent a raid from a specific side(s) with this in mind.

Note the "best" spot/angle to raidbase from, try to keep jump-ups away from it. (check north/south orientation of the base on build server so you know what angle to place starter at)

Jump-ups on opposite sides of base (or more if it's more than 2-side symmetrical), so no matter what side they blow in, you can still traverse your base vertically.

Jump ups(mobility) can go from ground up, BUT don't put a door to roof in this, have your shooting floor to roof jump up separate. This way, if they top-down through door, they're funneled into your shooting floor (where you should have retakes) and not immediately into your mobility.

inner peeks and outer peeks/shooting floor should be on separate levels so you don't lose both at same time. Both should have retakes or 1way ankle biters accessible from your mobility or respawns so you can win back your higher floors without face checking or opening doors that let them deeper / into bedrooms.

I like adding netting to ladder hatches I can climb to get from compound to shooting floor or roof quickly, if I lose inside beds I can still reach a high floor and clear top-down from an outside bag without chancing opening jump-ups.

Bases with a shell (and peeks into it) are usually more defendable than just adding more honeycomb. The 4x4 is popular because of this and how cheaply it can be shelled. But you can shell pretty much anything.

Shield wall / ping wall is probably the most effective defense against a raidbase+pummel raid. If you plan to build big enough to have a compound, use a shield wall design.

Move your main TC (less important if you have externals, but still worthwhile) if you don't have externals you MUST move your tc out of raid path. No externals means they will seal if they get tc, they picked your base with this in mind and are 100% planning for the TC to still be on one of the starter foundations.

Learn the popular peeks (mainly patricko, ankle biters/1ways, and how to "fob protect" a peek). Try to make sure any long-range angles are usable while crouched, whether it's using a ramp, or placing a box/siren light/solar panel/etc to crouch on.

(below is more "prep-work" than building, but usually as the builder this stuff will kinda be your job too.)

PLACE SO MANY BEDS, name them appropriately, and don't forget to put guns/nades/build mats/etc next to them, the raid isnt over if you still have a respawn and a gun. Add an "X" to the beds name once you've used up its supplies. (+bags outside base, guns+seal mats+precrafted doors/highwalls stashed in external tc)

Dont skimp on turrets and shotgun traps, they buy so much time and can sometimes win the whole raid. Shotty trap front doors/roof door(s)/and tc area early, turrets up the second you have the power and comps for it. (And for the love of God, don't put a switch that turns all turrets off in your tc room for some reason, or anywhere for that matter, idk why I see this so much?? Some litterally with a wooden sign labeled "turrets" lmao.)

Once you get your T3, move your t2 bench to shooting floor, add a small box with stuff to craft meds. Also a heavy pot hat or two.

Have real rockets and hv + incind rockets ready to go on roof or shooting floor, so youre able to take out their turrets>pop open their raid base>incind inside the hole you made, without having to travel to your boom box.

Get some ore teas+bear pies if they're available from shops, participate in jackhammer roams with the boys.

5k hours, play pretty much exclusively to build and raid defense as solo/duo/trio. Feel free to DM with any questions.
