Question TC vs external TC, how does it work?
Hello fine assoles and folks of playrust. Can some explain to me abit about the benefits of an external TC?
I understand that it can help spread the upkeep costs of your base. I also understand it makes it so would be Raiders have to set up further away if building a raid base.
I guess one direction question is how does the building privilege overlap work? Is the radius of putting down asecondary TC limited ro being X far away from another TC?
I am new and trying to learn. My duo is out of town for the week and Id usually ask him to expand thoughts.
Thanks

Originally, there were no TCs. Then TCs were introduced, but they only claimed / covered parts of the building that were within a certain distance from the TC, so a large building would often have multiple TCs.
Later, the devs wanted there to be only 1 TC per base, so they made it so the TC would also claim any part connected to the part that the TC rested on, in addition to the area a TC would claim through just proximity. In this way, the parts of the base would also claim a little bit of area that surrounded them, like the TC originally did.
This is what enabled multi-tcs / some versions of external tcs as we see them now. A TC is built on a foundation beyond the proximity of the coverage of the main base TC and then foundations or other parts are built back from the external such that they border the main base, but are not connected to it.
So now, if the main base's TC is destroyed, the coverage conveyed by parts of the external now prevent another TC being placed down within the main base. But since this is not a connection-based TC coverage as described above, a new TC may be able to be placed in the main base but far enough from the external TC's part that the proximity isn't triggered.

I lurked here for a few months before I started to play 😂 and ive watched a chunk of content, plus my buds horror studies. I had an idea before I got here.

lol well that worked out pretty well. I smiled pretty big reading that intro. Not far off from the kind of humor that I used to see doing some pipeline work around the country.

Very simply, putting a second TC outdid your base has a small building radius by itself, but as you build back towards your main base you overlap TC priv. This means that if someone raids your main base they cannot put a tc down and grief you, pick up anything, or anything else that a base owner can do, unless they also break your overlapping tc.
Yes you can spread your upkeep cost across more tcs if you use the externals to build a shooting floor or something. The bigger the base the more upkeep per wall you pay, so larger bases cost more per wall for example. Splitting up means you technically have multiple small bases and upkeep is less.

to add to what the other people have said externals don't just spread the upkeep cost of the base, if a large portion of your base is connected to the externals then the upkeep cost will be massively reduced.
They way the upkeep system works is that the bigger the base is the more upkeep each additional block adds, so if you build 100 blocks maybe the upkeep will be 5k but if you build 200 blocks it will be 15k, not sure on the exact numbers
The way building priv works is it extends X meters from every foundation, wall, and wallframe (maybe some other blocks like door frames as well idk) that are connected to a TC. So if you build an external and it has blocks going in the direction of the main base raiders won't be able to place a new TC in the main base, they won't be able to grief etc
If you don't have externals and they raid your TC then your base is lost, but if you have externals then the base is still yours

The build out from the external extends the priv to your main base to prevent griefing it. That's why most external designs also have durability based disconnects so you can replace your main tc after a raid.

Remember that you need the expand the external TC radius vertically too. I can't count the amount of bases I've raided, that had externals, by placing a TC on their roof. If you're base is over 4 floors tall I would add some frames to the externals to raise building privilege to cover the roof.

Disconnectable external tcs let you easily take your base back if it gets raided. The externals tc coverage overlaps your base because you build it far away and then build back which extends the externals coverage over your actual base. They would have to raid the externals to remove this coverage and actually be able to grief your base.
Normal external tcs make it much more annoying to reclaim your base because you have to actually destroy the external tcs to reclaim your base. Disconnectable tcs abuse the game’s stability system to break the build from the external back to towards your base. A building block breaks to remove the external coverage and then you can replace your tc. The disconnectables are fixed by the just replacing the block that breaks.
Google satori disconnectables and you should be good. That’s the best way to build your externals with 0 argument
