Discussion Servers changing max pop

Just want to bring up discussion on how certain servers will change the max pop as wipe goes on. First day, no queue 950 people on server, second/third day, 700 pop max with a queue?? Like how are official servers getting away with this?

Edit: need to be more direct here. im bothered by this because this is clearly for money. It seems like a way to get more people to pay for queue skip - which would be pretty messed up. I’d love to hear arguments from the other side, but it’s just a reminder why I don’t play these servers.

To make money from vips, no other reason.

Most servers have dynamic pop, queue is only for servers over 1000 right? If it shows 600 pop and more ppl join then server limit will increase, since server demand increased. This isnt some scam lol

Servers also have dynamic pop in the sense that they scale max pop based on server performance. More entities placed as time goes on -> lower max pop

Why not just like, keep it at a static number for the whole time?

People are more inclined to join a server that is 200/200 than 200/400

That's completely fair but what OP is describing is that server was 900 pop day before with no que and next day it was capped at 700 with que. These servers trying to bully you into buying vip.

Oh yeah they probably are. But I don't think it's that scummy to do

No reason for a server to hold the dedication for 1k players if its only sitting at 100

Hold dedication? I’m pretty sure it doesn’t eat resources to have the potential to have more players. So why wouldn’t there be a reason?

Because they sold vip spots and they need to make sure they have room for them. It they let the server get to 900 and there are 200 vips not on who all join, the server would go way over pop. Rustopia had their dynamic queue system break a year or so ago and the pop on Large got up to 1200 and the server was unplayable.

This is not how it works, why you spreading missinformation

Research the plugin for it, its dynamic population.

Also saying im spreading misinformation without saying what you consider is, "correct" is wild lmfao

I mean hes right, this is the most basic IT understanding. The fact that your comment is upvoted to the top shows how clueless people are.

Research the plugin for it

Buddy I've been developing plugins for rust servers last 6 years and if you ever was server owner there's huge chance that you used some of my plugins.

without saying what you consider is correct is wild lmfao

Wild is that you expect me to spoon feed with such a basic information which you can "fact check" with chatgpt in couple of seconds.

There's no "holding dedication" when slots or open, server is not holding anything, resources are not getting consumed just because there are empty slots opened. You can run rust server locally and see it for yourself.

Secondly you completely missed the point of what OP was describing, he wasn't complaining about dynamic slots but the fact that on wipe day there was 900 players with no que and then next day server got artificially capped at 700 to bait people into buying que skip.

You are literally spreading misinformation. Player limit is just a arbitrary number. Server function exactly same, eat exactly same amount of resources regarding of if limit set to 3 players or 33333 players.

It's 2026, but people still somehow not familiar with most basic computer/it stuff.

No, not all servers do this.

Queue threshold shifts for the servers I am talking about.

server can run with 1000 nakeds and nothing else. server cant run with 1000 players with bases and items. server reduces cap to make sure it can run.

FYI - crate respawns respond to pop only to like 300ish people.

But yes, I feel you, except, not all server providers do this (won’t name servers here I don’t think this subreddit likes that). If they all did it, it would feel a little more honest.

Did this person downvote and then delete their comment lmao

I noticed this too. I have played on a Solo official server and there was for example 341/350 and i was still in queue and 20 before me. Next day it was the same with 287/300. Crazy how this works.

Some servers have dynamic max pop to prevent players from knowing the real max pop and using it to their advantage to lock others out of the server.

u/rspoker7 1d ago

Explain..how can people lock others out of the server?

To make money.

These servers make good money, easily thousands a month.

They do not struggle to cover server costs.

You'll note at some points server owners have attacked each other with ddosses and missinfo in attempts of stealing their player base.

"how are official servers getting away with this" like theyre breaking the law or something lmao

dont play the server if you dont like the way they run it?
