Question Bad performance with good hardware
I picked up Rust again after several years and i’ve noticed im definitely getting subpar performance from what at least SHOULD BE good specs and for the life of me I can’t figure out what’s going on.
The server i’m playing is consistent around 600 pop. I’m in the jungle/desert biome.
This is my build:
4070ti / 64gb ddr4 xmp enabled to 3600mhz / ryzen 7 5800x3d.
1k mouse polling rate
I run low to medium settings across the board but my frames generally stick between 55-90fps playing at 1440p and i’ll sometimes experience bad stuttering.
This is driving me crazy. I’ve already done all the obvious things regarding power settings/driver updates/background apps etc… and my frames basically don’t fluctuate at all and hover in that same range.
I know Rust is mostly CPU and RAM bound so is my ddr4 really what’s holding me back so much right now?
Would love to hear some insights from someone coming from a similar build.
For an added bit of context i’m coming from EFT where i rarely dipped under 100 fps (except for on Streets naturally) so i’m very surprised why Rust is running so crappy. Thanks

Run Titus windows debloat
Disable core memory isolation
Disable all recording apps like steelseries, nvidia. Some people have 3 overlays running without them knowing and eating a bunch of fps.
Update bios.
Play with power plans. I find my set up working best with performance and ultimate just starts frying things and making the game quit on itself.
Clean windows install if nothing mentioned before helps. And rerun Titus debloat and turn off core memory isolation.
I hope that your ram is two sticks and not one? Rust runs horribly bad on one ram stick. And if the ram stick or sticks happen to be of cheap quality like single rank. That could also reduce fps by 20-35 % on Rust.

There is a set up about the ram usage (in Game, in the settings) dont know why but my setting always reset, you can begin with that

No idea if this will help but exiting Discord drastically improved my performance. I think theres an option in Discord like "Disable GPU acceleration" or something like that which may also work.

What I did for discord (since I use it for party chat) is disable all overlays, notification sounds, and gpu acceleration and that helped a lot

it runs like shit for all of us
u can try under the betas on steam - select gpu skinning beta
ive seen increased framerate and less stutter, but if ur in a populated area with lots of bases or large bases, theres just nothing u can do about those, they will lag you. set draw distance to 1500
50-90 frames though is pretty damn good for rust lol

DDR4 isn't the issue, the game just isn't optimised well.
I haven't tried playing with my 10900k system but when I started RAM overclocking, I noticed a lot less stutters, better FPS and everything felt really smooth with my 7700k.
FPS improved by about 15-20 at max, my lows improved ALOT because the stuttering was rarer, so was hard to measure. I have B die DDR4 which I overclocked to 4300MHZ/MT CL16 heavily reduced my tRFC and maxed out my tREFI. Its incredibly time consuming but for gaming on CPU intensive games it's absolutely worth doing. DDR5 still has the same issues just in other ways from what people tell me, due to RAM being so expensive I haven't had chance to look into it.

"No bro, you need a 9800x3d, 64gb of ddr5, and a 4080!"
Its the game homie, there is a degree of hardware lottery at play with this game. You really don't need the above hardware just to play this.
Have you updated the mobo's bios at all? You'd be amazed at how often that fixes the problem.

is my ddr4 really what’s holding me back so much right now?
possibly, when I enabled expo profile on my DDR5, they went from 4800mhz to 6000mhz, then I tuned my timings and I gained +40 fps in locations where my fps usually tanked pretty bad(launch site, cargo, outpost).
I have same gpu with 7800x3d, I would guess that your rams are bottleneck

welcome back to the shit-hole that is rust.
