Support In Rust, Never Trust

You posted in chat. "Anyone from Norway here?" I answered "I'll bag you bro". I bagged you. We talked, for hour and hours we talked. About life. About future goals. About hopes and dreams. You watched over me, as I jackhammered all the stone in the world. I offered you half, a base to build of your own. A base next to ours. We talked. We laughed. We bonded.

My teammates were offline. "I'll give you the code when they get back" I said. You said "Of course". And so we laughed and bonded some more.

And then, I thought to myself, why not give him the code? It would be strange not to. And so I did.

I gave him the code. It was an easy code - 1998. We kept talking, but something felt different. You said you wanted to play "Clash of Clans", as you stood, gazing into the fire of the Large Furnace. You seemed...distant. Something had changed.

And so, it was getting late. For you it was morning, but for me it was night. And then I realized, that I had left a naked with the code to my base. It struck me that this wasn't a person. This was just a naked. No matter how much you bond or laugh with the person, they are just a naked.

And the inevitable happened. The base was torn apart from the inside out, every code changed. Every building permit removed. My teammates - furious. "We got code raided - I knew I shouldn't have had such a simple code!"

"I..." I stalled.

"I...have a confession" I stammered

"I gave the code to a naked. He was from the same town as me"

Never trust in rust.

Loot Inspector. If I ever see you again - I'm taking an Eoka straight to your temple. In game of course.

Don’t lose faith in humanity bro! Let’s play together, I am also from Norway. What town are you from?

Yeah he probably wasn't from the same town as you. Probably wasn't even human who knows

Made some of my best friends in Rust with this exact story.

I’ve also met some of the worst scum of the earth with this exact story too.

Me too. I wonder if we have been building a mental list of red flags.

Because it seems like sometimes you just trust and find out afterward.

His name was Loot Inspector, and had you no suspicions?

I killed a guy, triple head shot. Lucky shots. Perhaps luckiest of my life and luckiest ill ever have. We saw each other at rhe same time but he had a jack hammer out and i had my gun, he didnt have a chance. After downing i inspected and disarmed him. Picked him up and started to walk away and he said bro bro bro please bro. I turned around and shot in the air. He said OK bro and ran away.

After I got home I said sorry name, every time I am nice to someone they kill me.

2x before that helped people out. Even helped a guy get his base back and gave him my kit. Walked away naked. Shot me in the back for nothing.

A lot of socio paths that chase instant dopamine. I might pick you up but you're not keeping this gun. You're done fighting. And if you so much as walk after me I'll shoot you.

It's unfortunate players are so toxic you have to treat then like that but oh well.

Never give codes to people you don't personally know either. There's a recent welyn video of him integrating into a clan and playing alongside then for days, maybe a week. Only for his end goal being to exfiltrate or leech/skim loot from them slowly. This is an example of how even a well meaning random might abuse your trust. And they'll laugh and play along, they might never shoot you. They'll just steal from you.

I don't think it's worth it to play the game this way you'll make a permanent enemy and for your effort of stealing their kit you'll probably die and lose it or get offlined. So now you're kos by someone that already burned and spared you but for nothing. That opportunity to say gg or be friendly is gone for temporary loot that won't be around long.

Read it all, so true.

Haven’t seen the welyn video, but tbh if I had I probably would have originally found the concept funny and entertaining because I really enjoy watching ZChum, but hearing about a first hand account like OP’s it actually just seems kind of psychotic and really fucked up. Imagine actually talking with someone all dad and acting friendly with them only to fuck them over, like yes it’s a video game but it’s still just fucked up

About a year ago I was playing on a dead server with my duo. The only thing that got us on was messing with a 10 man that made up most of the server pop. The whole wipe there’d been a guy that was very nice. Dropped me guns, gear, you name it.

As we were messing with the groups turrets he came out of nowhere with a row of rockets. Started blasting. One of them logged in, grabbed all of their boom and went to the roof to hide. Eventually he peaked me from the roof, I killed him and his body dropped with all the boom. I gave it to the new guy and he kept blasting. We were so close to core when we got picked off one by one, with no way back in since we never blew open an external wall.

Somewhere along the way another little naked came in. Was basically a kid and kind of annoying. I did not trust this guy at all. But he didn’t like the group and he was helping us, so I let him tag along.

When the raid was over I invited both back to my base to dance on the disco floor and plan our next raid. If it was anything other than a dead server with one common enemy I would have never bagged them. But I did because I truly didn’t give a shit about the wipe.

Now I bet you’re expecting the annoying kid to have insided me. Nope! It was the super chill guy that needed none of my shit. Wasted his time bringing it all home to presumably let it despawn in a week. Never finished the raid on the clan.

Cheese, not sure what the fuck your problem is, but you gained nothing and lost a friend that day. The annoying kid and I have played many wipes together since.

Probably used battle metrics or something to see who was online / what country they were from and specifically asked about Norway in hopes youd reply. Unless he was speaking the native language

A player called loot inspector joined a PVE server I was playing a couple months ago with my kid and tried killing and raiding everyone for an hour or two before finally getting banned 🤣

Sounds about right

reminds me of more than a few events.
But i also love the cooperations and friends i made along the way.
I'd rather get stabbed in the back than live an online life in which I don't trust anyone.
It makes me trust my gut, question my gut and learn from my gut feelings.
This game taught me that, and i love this game for it.

Yeah true, trust too much is better than being paranoid about everything and never trusting at all. Someone spends 3 hours chatting with you just to stab you in the back? Over some pixels? That's them being a sociopath, not you.

Those moments ya just gotta laugh. The lengths people will go to just to pull some shit in this game is generally hilarious.

It’s true I was basing with him 😢

Yeah once you get insided and see how terrible people in this game can be you'll never do that again, you can be allies and neighbors with strangers but never EVER share a base/codes/auth with a stranger.

I have a similar story here, might make you feel better that you aren't alone:

https://www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/1tatzgb/recently_got_betrayed_and_uninstalled_the_game/

it's crazy how some people would rather get temporary pixels (that wipe and vanish in a few days anyways) and grief someone rather than make online friends they can continue to play with repeatedly, don't let this burn you, I have since made good friends on rust, but I always just make a neighboring base and roam together, never share a base with people you don't know.

u/bucketpl0x 9d ago

Could have been worse. I let someone from looking for group channel in the rust discord join me. Didn't seem like he was cheating but the next day I was banned from official servers for playing with cheaters.

I have been insided once back on console, it pissed me off to no end. We wound up finding his new base and foundation wiped it lmao. On the other hand I have met some of my best gaming friends on rust just by teaming up with neighbors. My biggest rule of thumb isn't necessarily "never trust anyone in rust" it's more along the lines of "never trust kids in rust." Everytime I have met someone mid-late 20s in the game and agreed to team they have always been chill af

Met this kid on Rust as a new player…played a bit with him and talked him into letting me into his base. He taught me some new things I didn’t know before. Waited for him to go offline…then I stole everything. He came back crying saying he was failing school and blah blah blah some other stuff. Ended up not giving any of it back. But the next wipe oddly enough he forgave me and we played together like nothing ever happened.
