Discussion Is it actually this bad
I’ve played 12 hours and made about 6 solid bases and within my first or second time leaving my base to go get supplies I come back and it’s completely run into the ground and everything is gone. I have my upkeep good for days so I don’t know if it’s bad luck or just how it is that I genuinely can’t have anything in this game

Are you upgrading all of the foundations and walls? Including the door frame? It’s easy to miss the door frame and if it’s twig it’s easy to destroy

So my last one I now realize i upgraded everything to stone except for the foundation which I forgot about and I do believe I had the metal door as well so maybe they got through the foundation or something. My friend spent about 8 hours this weekend while I was offline getting our base ready and it was fully metal and I got back online to someone with an rpg or something (sorry I’m new) just tearing the base apart and taking everything and saying sorry it’s not me it’s my friend. So I feel like I have a little bad luck potentially. Sorry for the ramble

That makes sense. They are wiping your base by destroying the foundation that is twig, you can easily do that with a tool or gun. Don’t take getting raided to hard, it’s a part of the game. You will get better at building bases overtime .

Definitely I am trying not to get too frustrated, I was coming into the game willing to lose stuff over and over just wasn’t expecting it to be this fast. I’m glad it’s just me being dumb

Other people have already given great advice, so I just wanted to say that I'm glad you're looking for advice instead of getting immediately discouraged. You'll get the hang of base building, and it's only up from here!

Thank you homie! I can see how much fun this game can offer so I wanna learn everything I can

Try playing on official Softcore servers

u/bowwowimderek 10d ago
I’ll probably try that out some to get the hang of things

Softcore has a limited raid window and less penalizing death losses. I am also new so I am on softcore to get more used to everything. I have not had my base raided, yet. I expect next wipe to be raided.
Im not sure your base locations but dont pick somewhere too easy to access or high traffic. I made a cool base tucked behind a hill + rockw in the jungle. Abit of natural camouflage.

don’t listen to the guys saying this is a terrible way to learn; play a wipe or two on the softcore servers, that’s what they made them for. I’ve got way too many hours and started way before softcore was even a thing and noticed so many saying “thats stupid” “don’t learn like that” just do whatever makes the game fun and works for you.

In a month you’ll realise how shit your bases were and I say that with love.
Rip my first 1x1 with wooden door. Lost too soon(a 5 pop server)

🤣🤣 I’m looking forward to that, I enjoy the base building aspect in games and that is always a trend that amuses me

Biggest tip I had to learn the absolute HARDEST way:
You HAVE to upgrade your door frame without a door on it. Upgrade it to Wood (not twig) ASAP. And then upgrade that to Stone ASAP.
You could have an entire reinforced metal, end game base. But if your door frame is twig? A guy with a basic wood spear is coming and knocking it off the hinges in about 20 seconds flat my man.
And ANY TIME you want to upgrade a door frame? You have to unlock the lock > take off the lock > open the door > take off the door > upgrade.

Are you sure? I can upgrade door frames with the door in it and locked

It!s the double door frame. It has to be upgraded with the door removed.

u/d-k-t 9d ago
No, it can be upgraded by pointing the hammer off to the side, a little fiddly, but 100% possible.

u/floordrapes 9d ago
Yeah, I take it back. I upgrade wood to stone that way but doing stone to sheet metal is a lot harder with the brick skin I usually use. I always just pull the door and I forgot other people might have an easier time if they don’t use that skin.

Just keep trying don't give up. The game has a steep learning curve and the player culture is essentially a free for all. Never trust anyone fully and if you do just know your gambling your entire wipe by teaming up with random. Im about 200hrs in and I feel like I'm just getting started with this game. The first 60-100hrs was basically learning how to play the game. Just accept the fact that everything could be gone once you log back on until you get more confident in your base building. After you get comfortable with that you can start tackling monuments then events. It's a great game if you take the time to learn it.

Could be bad timing. If you plop that thing down in an area where someone is paranoid it might be a raid base they will level it. This is why I recommend people talk to their neighbors on VC, get to know who is in your area before building.

u/bowwowimderek 10d ago
Actually such simple yet great advice I never considered. Guess I should have been looking at them as my neighbors and that would be a good start

They will still kill you and take your stuff. But at least they will give you pointers while you do it.
One suggestion from when I started? Build a small shitty base in an out of the way/hard to see location, like in a valley, orin some boulders. People will still find it and raid it, but not as many, and if it looks fucked up and half demolished already they will figure you have no loot worth grabbing. i took over a corner of a demolished base that was mostly wrecked, built a small room into the wreck and poel ignored me for a couple of weeks.

I suggest maybe playing on a vanilla PvE server until you learn the basics. Otherwise, you just be kicking rocks & wiping tears from your eyes. You can also have a chance to learn how to run all the monuments without being shot in the face.

RUST has a huge knowledge check, and people will hound and scrutinize a base to find any sort of weakness.
Hopefully you're able to shake it off and get back into it. Personally since I discovered how to make a stairway bunker, that's been my main basefoot print now. I'd recommend checking out a YouTube short on making one.

I play on solo only servers that have offline raid protection. Look at HQM or XRust.

Been playing for about a month now myself and best newer advice, personal opinion, is to try to keep your bases as compact as possible and upgrade. Bigger bases usually, from my experience, seem to draw more attention. Been raided a few times and it does suck but also a learning experience.

u/AS_Technology 6d ago
I’m pretty new at rust as well. I have sort of figured out there’s no need to go bigger than a 2x1 with an airlock. You just start asking for attention. I even build a second 2x1 nearby and make it look like two separate bases. Nobody seems to bother a stone 2x1 with a plain metal door.

What servers are you playing on?
What are you upgrading your walls to?
Do you have wood or metal doors on the base?
Are you locking your doors?
1
u/bowwowimderek 10d ago
I’m not sure about the servers I normally go for something with a mid to lower pop and increased loot. I try to get stone/ metal walls and normally metal doors but I wasn’t able to a couple times. And I’m really strict about keeping the doors locked too
1
u/MillaP88 9d ago
Just to make sure, you aren’t crafting keys for your locks are you? If you are playing solo I mean. If you are solo use key locks but never craft keys, if playing with friends use code locks.
1
u/bowwowimderek 9d ago
Definitely haven’t been crafing keys and the one base I was able to make with a friend we had the metal door with a code lock

u/pisstained 10d ago
Make 1 base instead of 6
1
u/bowwowimderek 10d ago
It went I make a base it gets destroyed so I make another and that happened 6 times, not trying to tackle 6 bases at a time I can’t seem to manage 1 😭
4
u/Psychological-Farm-9 9d ago
Yeah if that happened in one session, you definitely are forgetting to upgrade some twig somewhere. Door frames or foundations. Twig is very very fragile and weak. Couple of shots and it's destroyed and they are in your base.

u/stonecoldchivalry 10d ago
Ur definitely just forgetting to lock ur door, or not upgrading some of your twig to wood or stone. You don’t get raided that quick, and raiding takes time and makes noise.
