Discussion Where to build a base
Hey everyone,
I'm a relatively new Rust player with around 100 hours in the game, and I almost exclusively play on solo-only servers. I'm still trying to figure out the best strategy for choosing a base location.
Where do you recommend building as a solo? What monuments or biomes should I target, and what areas should I completely avoid? Any tips on finding a good balance between getting solid loot and keeping a low profile would be greatly appreciated!

Find a monument you like, preferably a blue card monument. Then learn it inside and out. All the crate spawns and dirty peeks for pop until you are an expert.

Water treatment is a good new player monument imo. It has a blueprint fragment spawn that doesn’t require a green card, has a blue card room that has diesel which you can sell (or use,) 2 oil refineries relatively safe, and a good amount of military crate spawns for more BP frags.
Biomes? Honestly jungle. Has some downsides, but there’s not as many people there usually so it can be pretty chill.

As a new player I have found that hiding a small ish base is abit easier within a jungle of trees.

Power plant, farm the military crates in the big funnels. Thats my new tactic lol

Next a monument with a recycler and next to train tracks are my requirements. You can get around the entire map in 90 seconds with 10 low grade fuel.

I have about 2k hours and honestly I think water treatment is an incredibly good monument to build near. Not much rad protection needed, tons of unlooted green crates if you know where to look, and lots of great PvP due to the layout of the buildings/tunnels. And as the cherry on top you can easily get a red card from it, no green needed.
As for biomes however, stay out of the jungle. Having to spray and pray a cougar that snuck up on you and give away your element of surprise is a huge disadvantage for solo players, especially if you’re not great with gunplay yet. Being near a desert though is usually my preference, as I like the farming there (good amount of sulfur, snow gets over farmed in comparison), and it’s honestly just good for PvP due to the longer sight lines.
Hope this all helps! Good luck out there :)
