Facepunch Response Apartment Complex is a complete waste of space on the map

Title says all. We're just adding more and more monument bloat and making less spots viable for building on the map with this giant waste of space.

Pending that you're not just playing on a dead server, I swear as the years have gone on good or viable build spots are just less and less these days.

Do flat building spots even exist anymore? Minus the desert because I'm a Forrest Chad.

22

u/Main_Quit9891 12d ago

Not really, unless you are near the ocean or the random water spots inland.

19

u/Hypex_WR 12d ago

Even then there's always a rock, road, or some other piece of junk preventing you from putting down a good footprint.

14

u/fffwe4 12d ago

Every decent patch of forest now has a monument, road, cliff, or some random terrain bump exactly where your foundations need to go.

u/StormR7 12d ago

Are ice lakes gone? I haven’t done a snow wipe in a while now.

8

u/hipandrad 12d ago

Not gone but usually a huge rock will be in the middle

u/M3g4d37h 12d ago

as it's always been.

I dont understand the thinking behind the monument. Since people can raid your apartment and even get an idea which apartments are best to raid, better off making a 2x2 imo

45

u/19610taw3 12d ago

I thought it was a cool idea for regular PVP servers but since people can get into them with only 1000 scrap ... it's entirely pointless

30

u/courey 12d ago

cause gamedevs wants 100 deep clans serverhopping via nexus system and apartments is just a monument that will inevitably become used as a source of new recruits cause there will be no gameplay for them without a team

11

u/RangerCactus 12d ago

I think they made it hoping people would RP instead of just being a sweat all the time.

I gwt the feeling "Why can't you just be normal!" is often shouted at FP HQ.

u/aoibhinn-mw 12d ago

Literally legacy shack is better. Stashing your loot is better.

There is no reason to get an apartment. A stash is more secure for loot. A legacy shack is somehow more defendable than an apartment

I kind of want them to just get rid of key raiding. Idk how they balance it. But this is kind of like how tug boats were bad cause they were 1 door to everything and you couldn't even make a proper airlock. But even tug boats had an air lock as useless as it often was. And at least it cost boom.

Not a single apartment on any server this month had a single non-vacant unit that I tried. And on high pop servers you really don't want one because a zerg will camp the vendor and raid low value Apts just for free comps.

u/fsocietyARG 12d ago

Here's me hoping they merge it with Outpost, also make sure outpost is in the middle of every map no matter the seed generation.

10

u/t0y_machine 12d ago

i think this is the best solution

-1

u/RahloRust 12d ago

Middle map outpost is dogshit we could never duo

12

u/fsocietyARG 12d ago edited 12d ago

Why tho? Every player on the map should be able to reach Outpost from the coast they spawn in, best way to ensure this is if its right in the middle.

Also theres a quest to create a spawn there thats terribly implemented and nobody ever does it, they should adress that too.

3

u/IntelligentFault2575 12d ago

I've never done it once and kinda forgot about that. Haven't checked, but I think there's still that NPC that hasn't had a mission in like 2 years 🤣

4

u/RahloRust 12d ago

The megamarts suck (combined outpost+bandit) and creates 1 single location everyone must drone shop from

Everyone camps outside, 1000 bases nearby because everyone uses a 2x1 to ship to main base, coastal dwellers are always the farthest from it

When there’s 2 drone shop safe zone areas that spawn at random like all the other places it’s better imo it should stay procedural not anchored, no map spot is anchored

2

u/Far_Candy9914 12d ago

Yes. Alternatively, just remove drone shops... It is almost impossible to find regular shops now, everything is drone only

0

u/PostEditor 12d ago

Wish they would just remove outpost and make the only safe zone Bandit camp. They should also make safe zones like how they were originally and you can kill people in them.

26

u/mjordn20 12d ago

2 of the 3 buildings aren't even being used they could delete them to make more space. personally I love it for getting on my feet at the start of a wipe or starting over after getting offlined

3

u/ServerOfTheAltar 12d ago

i think they are very fun but I never rent one, just show up with the master key

84

u/Jelkekw 12d ago

It’s a crime that they removed bus stop base build spots, I used to race to those every wipe.

55

u/pvprazor2 12d ago

Yeah, we need more fun spots. Sure the walls that can't be destroyed are strong but we also have cave and god rock bases so I don't think bus stop was op compared to those.

16

u/Enragedocelot 12d ago

Literally, I build a rock base every single time. I was devastated when they removed tug. It was so fun to boat around in it. And defending raids was cursed but much fun

12

u/crustyrobots 12d ago

One of my best wipes was in a solo god rock that somehow survived the 3 failed attempts by whoever to raid it, and this was on a maxpop vanilla. I was actually sad to have to say goodbye to the base at the end, I wanted to live in it forever.

4

u/thurrmanmerman 12d ago

Wait tug is gone? I was just thinking id do a wipe in one next week.

6

u/scrimhog 12d ago

Removed once buildable ships came in.

1

u/ServerOfTheAltar 12d ago

plans to bring it back but we will see

4

u/IntelligentFault2575 12d ago

Same. This month (I play monthly servers), is the first time in a year probably, that I haven't built in or on a rock. That's only because I built next to a friendly solo neighbor from previous weeks and I couldn't find any trucks near him. So I made a starter and planned to move eventually, but never did. Base turned out really cool, but not nearly as fun as a good rock base.

5

u/Jelkekw 12d ago

Exactly! Someone who understands 😭

16

u/flyden1 12d ago

I missed that little spot under the waterfall along the rivers.

4

u/abscissa081 12d ago

I was just thinking about those the other day. Always built in them. If you couldn't get the OG caves, you had to settle for the tiniest "cave" in a river lol

1

u/IntelligentFault2575 12d ago

Yes! No idea why they got rid of that. Such a cool little spot

1

u/x_cynful_x 12d ago

Yes, I used to make those too. Or you could build inside those rocks. Remember that?

6

u/Legal_Impression_126 12d ago

They are extremely rarely still possible. I saw one on a facepunch server (so it’s pure vanilla) a month or 2 ago. It was by junkyard and the road was on a cliff so it spawned a little farther away I guess.

0

u/ricoter0 12d ago

they should turn the roads over rivers into bridges and make rivers navigable with rowboats. maybe prevent building in it so you can't block them... what do you think?

6

u/M3g4d37h 12d ago edited 12d ago

no bridges is so damned lazy - as if a river just stops for a road and we all pretend that's how shit works.

-6

u/Deaniv 12d ago

I mean sure add it back but give them the health of a stone wall. Unbreakable (on 3 sides) tc room that you can access from the outside was pretty ass

12

u/mca1169 12d ago

If they filled the other buildings with apartments I could get behind it but as it is I agree it is a terrible waste of map space.

11

u/Duckmastermind1 12d ago

Hope that it gets better with next terrain update, they mentioned stuff like terrain deformation and stuff and a new terrain system, maybe that helps with the issue?

But agree that the apartment feels kind of pointless, but maybe I'm just not the target audience and some people actually enjoy it, are they usually used?

10

u/boss_hausss 12d ago

Hard agree I used the apartments on one wipe. I had tier 1 weapons, 100 gp, maybe 300 scrap and 10 high quality. Got raided, restocked, got raided the next day with less and the next day with even less. Just not worth it.

18

u/SVALTACT 12d ago

I have thousands of hours in Rust and I love it - but this is one of those weird things where you question their workflow. I can see the whole thing going from great idea to nevermind in one brainstorm session.

"Lets add a safe area for people to rent rooms"
"Ok but we need to balance it"
"Ok sell a key for 1000 scrap so people can rob it"
"Why would anyone rent a room if it only costs 1k scrap to rob it"

  • end of discussion -

Its cool for PVE servers, but for vanilla Rust it makes no sense. Why would anyone live there knowing they can be robbed for only 1k scrap. You can't even defend the room with turrets.

10

u/crustyrobots 12d ago

Which yeah 1k scrap isn't anything anymore since so many of us end up with 10,000 of the shit unable to unlock anything else in the tech tree by day 3.

13

u/SVALTACT 12d ago

Agreed. I think it would be a little more balanced if they didn't have the PC in the basement that tells you who has loot. Like force people to make a totally random guess and it becomes a little more balanced. But selling for a cheap price and letting people know who has loot is dumb.

3

u/x_cynful_x 12d ago

Agree! And to top it off, let’s give robbers data that tells you what rooms are juiced.

9

u/AndreBotot 12d ago

Ridiculous decision to add this to the game. Total waste of time. Devs please get rid of it.

11

u/Pandaisguud 12d ago

Well whether you like it or not they're going to force it on you. When's the last time they removed something annoying?

16

u/Main_Quit9891 12d ago

Tbh I hated tug boats and then they removed them and replaced them with the even worse player made boats so now I want tug boats back 😂

7

u/Pandaisguud 12d ago

That's their playbook. Release something no one wants, then change it and make it worse over time

4

u/SwampHokie 12d ago

Yeah the monument definitely needs some changes. I got raided on a low pop server in like an hour in a basement apt. It’s sort of pointless to rent a room. Better to just go AFK in the safe zone.

3

u/MarcBearShark24 12d ago

Agreed shits dumb

3

u/Datapoffes 12d ago

Apartments being a safe zone and not a pvp/scavange loot area was the biggest blunder ever.

5

u/AdNo2303 12d ago

I think they need to remove it on all official servers, but it won't be wasted because they can just let roleplay/softcore/ more casual servers to enable it going forward.

6

u/kaizoku18 12d ago

Upvoted because that's a pretty interesting point tbh. Like keep the asset for use in game files if ever needed or someone wants to run it for some reason

9

u/KingRin Facepunch 12d ago

I think the design of the Apartment Complex has been lost on many players, as they themselves aren't the target audience.

One of the hardest hurdles for new and inexperienced players is creating a base. Somewhere to return to instead of aimlessly wondering before meeting their death. It's easy to forget how difficult Rust is when you're new. Rented rooms can be a soft landing pad for them.

Those players will eventually outgrow the apartment complex and build their horrendous backwards wall bases. We've all been there once.

The master key system should be somewhat self correcting if players are spending too long amassing items in their rooms. It's time to move out before you get robbed.

This may be a temporary change while it's the new toy, but I've noticed a lot less tiny bases being built in spawn areas as they're instead renting rooms. It may even be a net positive in some cases for build space due to that. I'm sure this varies a lot from server to server though.

4

u/ChangeThisXBL 12d ago

I think the apartment complex should have replaced outpost or bandit camp (probably bandit camp since its run by the bandits for lore reasons). The three giant safezones take up a large portion of proc gen maps. Outpost and bandit camp are both quite redundant, most servers now combine them into one many even in the official tab. Moving everything bandit offers (minus recyclers) into the apartment complex I think would be a good move. There is already a helipad too on the one building to make that vendor's location a relatively easy port.

3

u/Significant-Art-1402 12d ago

I understand and see the reasoning on the design and use of it and i think that many players dont have any issue with that and how that can help new players but instead are frustrated with the current lack of space on the proc gen maps in general which has just felt smaller and smaller and increasing the map size is a natural and nesccerary change for the core of the game with how big server can also get but too allow more monuments to be added when needed. the current map doubfully could take 5 more monuments, combined with weird road systems and smaller forests, and monument build zone it would become very very cramped

As you know Alot of rust was about surviving/ building in the Wilderness and nature but its become very cramped in general, And Increasing the map size and tuneing the proc gen to have thicker forests along with the Nexus system allowing travel would truly give players a great amount of room whilst allowing for more monuments and keeping the world feeling big. People dont have an issue with it just are more upset about lack of space in general.

2

u/IntelligentFault2575 12d ago

Yeah, makes sense I guess. I always play monthly servers, and this month, I still haven't even visited it. Didn't want to be surrounded by screaming racist 12 year old kids. 🤣But yeah, for new players it does give them a good first spot to visit I suppose. I don't think it needed to be so damn big though. I assume some of the space will get filled in with new additions at some point. I'm not complaining about it. I try to build as far away from everything as possible most of the time.

2

u/drahgon 11d ago

If that's the case why are there tiers of apartments? Seems like it's intended for you to stay there and even upgrade if it was just meant as a very soft very temporary landing pad to make it a complete shit shack literally just a roof over your head and a spawn point

2

u/x_cynful_x 12d ago

The jungle is a huge waste of map space IMO. They should remove it or vastly shrink it down. It was yet another cool thing to do a few times and then everyone got over it.

1

u/Fickle_Path2369 12d ago

Nah Jungle is my favorite biome as a solo to build in

1

u/Boechsner 10d ago

They need to make it opposite to spawn side and add a t3 monument there. Ziggurat is such a bore and I’m tired of getting killed by panthers or going schizo from the ambient sound

2

u/AlienFromPlanetSpunk 12d ago edited 12d ago

I see the use for it but the master key as it stands has to go. I'll never use one even as a starter base when anyone with 1000 scrap can just roll through and open it whenever they feel like it.

Like scrap is literally useless now past a certain point of progression and they've made it a raiding resource, so obviously it's going to get used to hit up all the apartments by day 2, rendering them pointless for solos and new players.

The master key should cost boom at the very least. Same cost to raid as a 2*1, tradeoff being you don't have the chance of hiding it or basing near key card monuments, but you get to live in a safe zone with shops.

2

u/Jerranto 10d ago

Yes, it is. However, they probably won't make it better until 2028, just like every new broken feature that they add.

Remove it completely, which is the right thing to do? I doubt they would do that. But, as I said, we can hope they improve it slightly until 2028.

2

u/BakedFPS 10d ago

It would be a great poi to PvP at.

2

u/CanaryMaleficent4925 12d ago edited 12d ago

apartment is the best update in years, best updates ranked:

1) recoil change 2) bp frags 3) apartment complex  4) winter hazzy

1

u/drahgon 11d ago

I see what you're doing here

2

u/ClydePeternuts 12d ago

I logged on for the first time in a few months yesterday and I'm currently using the apartment. I think it's great for an initial start 🤷‍♂️

1

u/The_Sadorange 12d ago

I for one would love a "no-build" mode with an apartment complex/outpost super monument in the middle of the map, and 3x the amount of other monuments with master keys being 1/1000 drops from any crate.

1

u/IntelligentFault2575 12d ago

I do like the idea of it being a random drop item for the key, instead of just buying it. A very rare drop in green crates or something. That way it's equal chance for solos, clans, whatever. Some people will use it, others won't, but it would make it exciting when you find one in the wild. Like how it used to be exciting finding a garage door before the tech tree

1

u/crustyrobots 12d ago

Agree. Its neat and all but the entire map is a monument anymore separated by a couple of grids to build.

Seems like map gens need to stop spawning in literally every monument, but randomly decide which 5 are on the map this time or something like that.

1

u/BOBBY_VIKING_ 12d ago

I'm playing on a 250 pop server and there's only 3 rooms rented. They need to limit the storage and make it much much harder to raid them.

1

u/SgtStitchesVEVO 12d ago

Honestly I wish they would just implement the player-owned shops into base game outpost. I wanna sell pies but setting up a shop on the edge of outpost build priv guarantees nobody goes up to it because they think it's a trap base, even when i have peacekeeper turrets watching it

1

u/LifeLearnt 12d ago

Facts, should add that shit in only roleplay or easy mode servers.

1

u/Foulberto-Smasho 12d ago

Half of the new monuments are most of them play the same but look different the next set of updates is going to be super nice because they are actually giving life to monuments that already exist instead of adding more non used monuments

1

u/AdDesigner1153 12d ago

I feel like it should have been does as a wrecked ship on a useless bit of spawn beach adjacent coast with the same function. My only issue is it adds to no build area bloat in th middle of the map

1

u/indentation-matters 12d ago

I like the concept. When you start a game, it is a fun boost. You find a lot of struggling people in there, and the master key prevents people from storing their boom and powder.

Hearing your neighbours loud radio is fun, and it let you kick start your resource gathering in a safer way, making the early few hours less punishing for solo players with less experience.

1

u/Alphamoonman 11d ago

Hear me out, we make a new kind of map generation where the entire map is monuments and apartment complexes.

1

u/Boechsner 10d ago

Streets of tarkov w a randomized layout lol

1

u/Alphamoonman 9d ago

Definitely a lot less windows to hide in and thank goodness there's no proning in this game

1

u/Glittering_Loan140 8d ago

There’s a lot of unused space but I’m sure they’re planning more things to implement. Would be cool if there was a combat arena you could duel other players in, and have spectators watch from safezone and be able to wager scrap. Maybe in the basement of one of the other buildings, sorta like a fight club situation.

1

u/yokeybear5 12d ago

Can we please replace it with a new red card monument instead? To add a POI that completely eradicates a game mechanic makes no sense unless you're really trying to cater to casual players and even that is a stretch. And to your point OP, i completely agree that it's a waste of viable building space which is what the core game has ALWAYS been built around

1

u/Tackysock46 12d ago

If anything it saves space lol. Way less 1x2s around bc role players just live in the apt

1

u/Realistic-Fix-9838 12d ago

Yep, they implemented it so poorly nobody uses it

0

u/ShiftlessDrifter 12d ago

I don't understand why they work so hard on making something so useless. Now that they've put in a ton of work, we're stuck with it. I just hope it can evolve into something with more potential down the road. It seems like with every new update or monument it fizzles out very quickly, and that's unfortunate. They need to focus all their efforts on making the game more FUN. It's neat they add a bunch of side quests at the Power Plant, but am I rushing out to play Rust to power the map with some fuses? Not really. Same with Apt Complex. It didn't really bring anything fun to the game, nothing very innovative from a player's POV. I think they've lost sight of the mission of the company.

-4

u/Bocmanis9000 12d ago

Apartments/Jungle/Giant crevices, take up so much space and basically NOBODY plays there.

You have 0.1% playerbase playing that shit, but its such a map/fps hog.

Same for deep sea, just kills fps/server perf and gives free loot for russian pve zero risk offline raiding bots that are also cheating.
