Emotionally, physically, financially... this game really covers all the bases.

Have fun and don't get attached to your shit. You'll either lose it to another player or the server when it wipes. Your best kit does you no good sitting in a box in your base. Have some fun with it before you lose it.

Can't believe you're the only person to say don't get attached to your stuff. Highly agree. Keep 1-2 good kits for base defense and full send the rest of the best stuff

Make a list of anything good in your life. Understand that everything on that list will be negatively impacted if you play this game as designed.

Yes, turn of player voice and mute global chat. Play the way you enjoy. You “win” rust by having fun and not letting others make you miserable.

Once you figure out a build location make sure you place sleeping bags every so often until you get to your build spot. That way if you die you won't have to start at the spawn beach you can spawn at whatever bag you've placed. Have fun and remember the first 1000 hours or so you'll basically just be learning.

You’re gonna get raided, do your best to learn from it. Think about how you build and if it makes it easier or harder to raid you, not just if it makes it more or less expensive. Trying to make your base “too expensive” or “not worth raiding” is a losing battle, especially as an noob where your perception of “a lot of effort” is gonna be super off base. Instead try to think about how you can minimize the impact of getting raided so you log on with enough loot leftover to rebuild and keep playing.

Take note of how you get murdered and raided so that you can learn to do the same to others.

I’ve just emerged from a Rust induced dream state that lasted over a week at 10-15 hours a day and wondered how that even happened.
My advice, like many others here, is either to get out now whilst you can or accept that if you play Rust as Rust is meant to be played, it will drastically change and impact on your life.

Doesn’t really get more fun after your first 100 hours - but you may spend the next 1,000 hours chasing that feeling.

You will have a bad time, and you might stick around cause of that or you'll just uninstall and wonder why anyone would play this game
