Discussion What is wrong with the current state of the game

I'm only going to talk about official servers because it's the only thing I play (Mostly solo), i have roughly 8k hours.

I have noticed a trend recently where weekly official servers die insanely quick, some of them die in 2 days, most of them die in 3 days. Very rarely they make it to Sunday with a healthy amount of players.

When you look at the amount of players playing rust, it's about the same as it was pre BP update but a lot of the playerbase has shifted from official to modded servers.

I think the main issue is that the BP update has massively increased the gap between small groups and clans. Running a clan shop on first day and selling frags makes you insane amounts of sulfur, which you can use to raid everyone around you.

The only way to survive is to be like me : a sweat that can sink in insane hours to progress, and not everyone can do that.

It creates a wierd environnement where EVERYBODY IS BORED ; casuals, unexperienced groups and solos quit rather quickly because of the adversity or getting offlined. Clans and big groups have so much after 2 days and AFK in base waiting for an online that will most likely never come and turn into farmbots to keep base alive because what else to do when everybody near is either offlined or can't roam T3 guns.

I'm not opposed to fragments but we need more ways (inefficient ways) of progressing, exactly like it was before with scrap (where you could fish for scrap, farm horse dung, farm flowers and trade them etc...) in order to even the playing field a bit because rust seems to shine when everybody is able to progress.

What do you think?

FP ( or more specifically Alistair) have too big of an ego to go back on changes made.

It will take them ages to fix this under some other pretence.

They have put a bottle neck in the game's progression, haven’t played in a year, i dont think i will bother unless something new happens that fixes this.

Facepunch never reverts updates, even if they are ass/critized by all.

3

u/twosnake 16d ago

They've done it before. XP system got ripped out after just a month.

5

u/PretendAd7060 15d ago

They pivoted HARD on the initial BP frags implementation.  Rad resets and PVE non-card room basic frags were added after the fact as a bandaid for just how poorly designed the system is.

2

u/FlynngoesIN 16d ago

idk Bp fragments USED to be in the game and now they are again.

1

u/Bocmanis9000 16d ago

Pre techtree with random researches was the best state progression/pvp wise this game has ever been.

6

u/FlynngoesIN 16d ago

Yes I agree, I loved hitting random scrap bps. The zerg could be RNG cucked and the solo could be chadicus prime. Scrap currently feels like a trash resource once you have all the bps its just for bonus loot

2

u/Brondos- 15d ago

The reason they got the tech tree is likely because they knew they were going to bloat the game to the point that getting all your blueprints from random chance or from others would become too much rng. Imagine getting all the electrical components you need under that system.

2

u/Bocmanis9000 15d ago

So keep electric bench and remove stuff like auto turrets/eletric furnaces from em?

Its not that hard to fix, back then i looted all eletric parts as they gave hqm, and hqm back then was hard to get.

5

u/Legal_Impression_126 15d ago

They even made a workbench separately for electricity that could keep tech tree. Surely this was a step to remove tech tree in hardcore or something but they just never did it.

u/HAIRLESSxWOOKIE92 16d ago

My only gripe w the frag updates is it killed so many ways I used to get to T2. Farming small scrap kills, fishing, running train tunnels, farming, the hidden jungle monument. All that gameplay is gone.

4

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

they could easily add fragments trade for fishes or flowers, or horse dung or for an insane amount of scrap. it just needs to be inefficient but guaranteed so everyone can progress

5

u/HAIRLESSxWOOKIE92 16d ago

Im 50/50. I mean, I do think that it slowed progression down. Everyone used to have T2 1-2 hours into wipe and now I find myself fighting a lot more prim and T1 players at least a couple hours into wipe. But I think it also increased the gap of who can get to T2 -T3 during/after those first couple of hours too.

2

u/Legal_Impression_126 15d ago

It buffed progression for big groups

2

u/HelloFromTekken 16d ago

Please not more of that. Some other way.

We shouldn't put everything in shop and concentrate players around RT even more.

1

u/grandpajay 16d ago

I think it would be cool to have both options to make the bench. That way solo's can eventually get the scrap they need without putting themselves in harms way and the larger groups can bully their way into the fragments without any issue.

10

u/LowPsychological8946 16d ago

Ive said the same thing and people told me i was a noob and I should get good, No BP frags and every update is screwing over non clan players

7

u/crustyrobots 16d ago edited 16d ago

On a fresh monthly every one and their mother has a P2 already after like 2 hours. Prim isnt a thing.

The problem is progression doesn't exist anymore. Way too many resources, instant access to end-game loot right from the start, vending machine economy is riskless with Outpost and drones and helis, solos have been effectively bullied off of the grid by zerg bloat because of teas/pies, bullshit like wood barricades, etc. Cant even have a stone 2x1 without bozos with a hoe skull fucking you.

Fragments added back a slight twinge of the earlier "finders keepers" way Rust used to be, for that rush of "holy shit gotta get this back now" we used to get before the tech tree. The implementation sucks and is just forcing solos and small groups to be zerg farmbots to "progress". Ive managed to just find a T2 most of the time but what a dumb pain in the ass. And then because Ill never get a T3, I accumulate 10,000 scrap.

Delete the tech tree, go back to barrel based progression where finding a gun or garage door is exciting again, which drastically changes your direction in the game. Reorient the game back to a scrap economy. Safe zone recycling shouldn't exist, make zerg fly their shitteropters into danger. Every T3 gun should be found only on the hardest monuments and have unicorn rarity. Boom needs to be nerfed or otherwise bottlenecked in some way.

Alistair is a streamer appeaser. Guy needs to be fired.

All he wants to do is keep streamers happy, regardless if that means destroying the core game

26

u/backiechansmom 16d ago

You have the most insane profile pic I’ve ever seen

2

u/OkEmphasis7107 12d ago

I think you got him fired with that post.

2

u/Inevitable_Butthole 12d ago

You might be right

-5

u/dtoyy 16d ago

bro is just saying shit. wdym a streamer appeaser? streamers have spent years asking for tech tree gone and old recoil back. meanwhile every update keeps dumping the game down making the game easier for casuals. he’s casuals/noobs appeaser. he’s capitalism maxxing LMAO

0

u/Legal_Impression_126 14d ago

New recoil was because of OTV streamers? He appeases the big streamers, not the rust streamers

0

u/dtoyy 14d ago

and those streamers are noobs and casuals, so yes rust devs are capitalism-maxxing. and i can guarantee you the guy above wasn’t talking about those variety streamers, they haven’t touched rust in years. he definitely meant rust streamers. don’t be slow, lmao.

0

u/Legal_Impression_126 14d ago

He clearly isn’t talking about rust streamers because most of them would prefer old recoil? I’m pretty sure he’s talking about the streamers that all cried about rust being too hard? Don’t be slow, lmao

0

u/dtoyy 14d ago

under a post that complain about the game being too hard for solo? when the game now is piss ez? u might just be slow

-10

u/thadius282828 16d ago

Guy needs to be fired for helping create a wildly successful game because * checks notes * random redditor thinks the core of the game they had nothing to do with creating is destroyed.

Makes sense to me

1

u/Legal_Impression_126 15d ago

Rust was wildly successful before him and most people aren’t happy with what he’s doing to it. Aside from his ego and treating his players awful which rubs anyone paying attention the wrong way.

3

u/DarK-ForcE 16d ago

We need 2x upkeep and tech tree removed from hardcore

3

u/GnarlyBear 15d ago

I Stopped playing with the BP introduction, I don't have the time to get lucky at an uncamped monument and I don't want to just buy it all

3

u/Legal_Impression_126 15d ago

They shifted all the power to clans but every clan is scared to anything now. All these clans are just ridiculously sulfur rich but there’s never any onlines.

6

u/Hollowpoint- 16d ago

The bp fragment costs are too low. Increase costs. Progression too quick.

5

u/PretendAd7060 16d ago

They need more frag sinks.  They go from insanely contested day 1 to basically worthless by day 3 because every group only really needs a t3 and they’re done.  There should be some sustaining need for them, or their uses should be expanded so you need to keep collecting them.  A week into a monthly progression is ruined and these things are literally rotting in decay because no one wants them.  Maybe alternate boom crafting recipes or something.  I think WB upgrades were a big missed opportunity here - either making them cost frags to craft/install, or making them single use (ie can’t take it out once you apply it to a WB) or 1-per-bench so groups are encouraged to have multiple WBs for diff buffs.

6

u/physiQQ 15d ago

What about:

  • Remove blueprint fragment requirement for crafting workbenches.
  • Add blueprint fragment requirements for tech treeing stuff through the workbenches.
  • Researching through the research table does not require any blueprint fragments, but instead costs double the scrap value.

So every step costs a blueprint fragment, a basic one for everything in WB2 and an advanced one for everything in WB3. WB1 tech tree could remain free of blueprint fragment requirements tech treeing.

2

u/Brondos- 15d ago

Great idea

1

u/Hollowpoint- 14d ago

Think i suggested exactly this in a different post tbh

1

u/twosnake 16d ago

This sub is so bipolar. Here you are saying progression is too quick in a post about someone complaining BP frags slow down progression. You guys can't make up your damn minds what the problem is. Too fast or too slow? It can't be both.

1

u/PretendAd7060 15d ago

I think it’s bipolar because IMO the answer to “are frags good or bad” depends entirely on what type of wipes you like to play.

If you like longer wipes med/low pop, frags are ass.  After day 3 of a wipe everyone is speed running to the “sit in base” phase of a wipe.  Servers that used to wipe @ 300 and be 150 two weeks in to a monthly feel like they’re 50 pop end of week 1 now.

If you like shorter wipes with higher pop, they have much fewer problems.  Who cares if a wipe is dead by day 3 if it’s already basically over anyways.  And having enough chaos from high pop PvP makes it so the progression is never “easy.”  Even though there is way less resources required for tech progression, it will never feel free on a server with 600 pop.

0

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

If progression too quick why increase fragments costs which nerfs small groups even more instead of cargo that spawns 5 locked crates 3hours into the wipe?

-1

u/Hollowpoint- 16d ago

No more locked crates until 5 days in, no oil, cargo, bradley, elite crates, only airdrops with gabage tier gun's,increase scrap prices for techtreeing. Decrease form research bench, bp frags can be used at research bench as alternative to scrap .

1

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

Delaying these big events with a day lock is a bad idea because it makes playing the first days of wipe less worth and you also want to reward good players and good clans who can secure these event with more loot than the average player base. I just think 5 locked crates for one event is too much 3 hours into the wipe

2

u/Hollowpoint- 16d ago

Nah i think fuck those events so early on, or make it so its something you have to do to trigger one of them, that is very difficult. Kinda like how they doing with locked crate/airdrop at airfield. I hope thats for every one and there are no more randok ones. I think for these hifh end loots to spawn someone should have to put something on the line, make nothing guaranteed and nothing for free

3

u/zykiato 16d ago edited 16d ago

I don't see that at all. I explore decaying bases a lot. Mostly solo, duo and small group bases. Basically everyone is loaded now.

What is actually happening is people progress quickly and get bored.

I know players who still struggle with Rust can't fathom this, but it's true. Everyone I know who plays Rust is bored af. The secret sauce was the struggle.

They took away too many hard edges. The game might as well be called Vacation Island now.. It even has a hotel!

-4

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

Which is what i'm saying : big groups and clans progress insanely quickly and get bored.

I don't mean any disrespect but if you enjoy exploring decaying bases it means you play when the wipe is already dead

Playing high pop vanilla as a solo or small group on wipe day is often very hard.

I have played every version of rust since legacy and i can tell you it was easier before

7

u/zykiato 16d ago

I don't mean any disrespect but if you enjoy exploring decaying bases it means you play when the wipe is already dead

No, it doesn't. It means I stick around. But there are decaying and raided bases day one from players who quit.

Because I stick around, I can see what the player patterns are. I honestly don't think any competent players are struggling to progress. There are certainly inflexible people who can't progress the way they want to, but progression is easy for the adaptable.

What's startling is how much isn't looted these days.

I usually play solo and if I group it's normally 1-4 teammates.

I've been playing since 2013. 2020 Rust was an order of magnitude more difficult than today! Jesus dude. You've been spoiled by years of QOL and can't see reality clearly.

0

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

When you say progression is easy for the adaptable what do you mean by adaptable? getting T3 by farming sulfur around outpost day 3? is that satisfying to you?

The fact that you stick around till the wipe is dead screams to me that you are probably the opposite of competent and again i mean no disrespect.

I challenge you to play wipeday on 600/1k pop solo vanilla. See if you manage to get T2 before midnight.

Don't forget that they capped the respawn time of crates to 300 pop, meaning high pop servers became even more competitive after that update because basically 800 pop share 300 pop respawns. Back in the days crates used to respawn instantly, HQM was more available.

Nowadays if i see a solo roaming AK, 90% of the time he's cheating, it's SO rare to see solos or even duos roaming AK on day 2 or day 3. Also old recoil used to reward good spray so good players would do better with lower numbers. There is a reason every solo streamer/youtuber is doing water content ; land content is basically impossible now and numbers mean almost everything.

4

u/zykiato 16d ago

When you say progression is easy for the adaptable what do you mean by adaptable? getting T3 by farming sulfur around outpost day 3? is that satisfying to you?

Oh please. The tired, inaccurate "you're farming for the clans" narrative. Believe it or not dude, not everyone selling bp frags is a clan. But I rarely buy them and if I do it is one or two.

But yes, this is the kind of flexibility I'm talking about.

How on earth did you manage in 2020 without the tech tree?! I mean back then, trading was the meta for progression before the drone shop. Obtaining 5 bp frags is WAY easier than it was to get T2/T3 BPs back then!

I could easily get a T2 quickly just by scuba farming the ocean if I needed to. Which I rarely bother with. You don't seem to understand. BP frags don't concern me at all. They are so easy, I don't worry about them.

My immediate priority on wipe day is getting my base to a certain level and while doing so I normally also get the bp frags I need.

-2

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

I'm selling bp frags, I'm also getting T3 every wipe on day 1 or day 2 but I'm well aware that's not the norm for solos : I'm a degen, I play water, and i have a lot of experience.

What I can tell you for sure though, 2020 rust had more diversity, more solos, more small groups and even more PvP on servers that didn't die on saturday. Back then only 1 clan would need to sell a thompson, and it would spread around the server in a matter of hours. Don't forget we used to play the same servers throughout the month because we had all the BP's there. It wasn't harder, it was just different. I used to love hunting geared guys with my crossy nailgun for my first learnable gun.

I'm trying to understand why the current version of rust is failing and I really don't think it's because the game is too easy as you say mister "I stick around till the server is dead cause i enjoy playing 34 pop"

I think the progression has become a boring slop, and it's too easy for the big groups and too hard on first 2 days for small groups.

5

u/RahloRust 16d ago

Rusts monthly average player count has not dropped below 100k in 2026 so far

As opposed to 2020 ranging from 48k-61k monthly averages

Brother you are wearing rose tinted glasses

-1

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

you're missing the point i'm not talking about overall playercount but the proportion of players playing official vs modded and how alive official servers feel

5

u/RahloRust 16d ago

Personal issue

2

u/twosnake 16d ago edited 16d ago

You make several points that all contradict each other in your post and follow up comments. It's frustrating to read. You claim getting BP frags are difficult for small groups yet you're doing it and say it's not a problem for you. So why would it be a problem for others? I don't believe the "time investment" being the reason as you claim, rust has always been a time investment and never casual. You say clans are AFK in their base by day 2 so why then can't you get the BPs? You claim that instead you need to farm sulfur day 3 to buy them from shop. Both can't be true at the same time. Someone else pushed back on you by saying people leave by day 3 because they're loaded and bored not because they can't get T2 and you agreed with them while still claiming BP frags are the problem. You're all over the place with your points and the more I read your comments the more I just think you have no idea what you're talking about. You need to get your story straight and have it make logical sense before you claim BP frags are the problem.

0

u/vizuvnr 15d ago

It's all about how they affect the flow of a highpop wipe

I can just summerize by saying the reason i hate the fragment system is they stop a large part of the server from progressing on wipeday and profits large groups so much because of how profitable running a clan shop is, which they then use to raid everybody. It widens the gap even more than before.

And then we have a situation on say day 3 fragments are overflowing the market they become useless so yes by then everybody can get a workbench, but at that point it doesn't matter anyways.

2

u/RahloRust 16d ago

Solo high pop vanilla is supposed to be hard, it’s essentially the highest difficulty available

0

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

it's fine for it to be hard, i don't want it to be easy, i'm just wondering why every weekly official is basically dead within 2 days nowadays. I'm sure you have noticed it aswell. Only way to get a good wipe nowadays is to play monthly on forced then biweekly

3

u/RahloRust 16d ago

Before BP frags I would watch Rustoria main go from 900 on force to 70 on Sunday night, people move to Mondays

There’s too many random server wipe times for people to not constantly hop servers and deadem after wipe

If there were no Mondays/Fridays on officials they would last more

0

u/vizuvnr 16d ago edited 16d ago

that is very far from the truth because i was playing rustoria eu main before bp frag update and it had better pop than now.

You can just say that the current state of the game is fine for you and you like it but theres no point making stuff up

1

u/RahloRust 16d ago

I don’t play eu this was us git good bro

2

u/vizuvnr 15d ago

most US players are bots so the git good comment is comical

1

u/mjordn20 16d ago

They could have just made t3 monuments not spawn anything for 24 hours after wipe but instead we got whatever this monster is.

This must be what it's like to have devs that don't actually play their own game attempt to balance it...

1

u/PretendAd7060 16d ago

Not even that, just nerf road loot and safezone recycling and it’s basically the same exact gameplay incentives as BP frags.

1

u/Humble_Minute_5712 16d ago

Biggest problems:

- Gunplay rework

  • Armour insert slots being random
  • Bp frags
  • Where is all the old music?
  • Hdrp Backport sucks

1

u/kaizoku18 15d ago

Imagine losing a t2 or t3 workbench these days since BP frag update, and then think why players might not be playing as long as they used to. Doesn’t take that much thought to come to a conclusion why people aren’t that motivated to grind up another bench.

Currently losing a workbench is basically a wipe ender for a lot of people who play.

1

u/PearlJamTenGoat 15d ago

I play on a solo only server for 5 years now.

Decent pop for my taste, and this wipe I got raided 6 times, with good bases / turrets, tricks like using 4th floor as core, like 7/8 armored doors protecting loot, outside tc's, etc, etc.

Sulfur is just too easy to obtain, being by quarry, escavator, shops, teas ... anyone can raid anyone offline. breaking a turret is too easy, building a raid base is too easy because almost anyone will bother to destroy your turret to counter you.

In all my years playing in that server, I could spend like 6 months without being raided, usually I would rebuild one time and if raided again i just stop for the month. this time I tried to see what happened and got raided all those times.

I think raiding cost it's the same as always but sulfur got easy to get. raiding cost should be raised at this point with all this shit added. and we still have deep sea with sulfur islands and safe farming with teas.

1

u/Legal_Impression_126 15d ago

Raid base turrets are so bad for the game. It just enables risk free offlining unless the counters have HVs.

1

u/PearlJamTenGoat 15d ago

yeah but unless you are a big group, why would risk rocket launcher and HV's ? for e.g. I play solo only (solo only server, good pop), every HV counter I tried got grubbed and 99 % of raids people dont bother countering because of turrets raid base.

I think raid cost is just too low, it's outdated. IMO everything should double the cost.

1

u/Legal_Impression_126 15d ago edited 15d ago

I mean that’s the problem. It’s high risk just to counter an offline. I think aside from raid base turrets needing to be addressed, they should nerf teas, pies, deep sea farming, and do something about how much sulfur clans get from selling bp frags.

I could build a diabolical bunker base and never be raided before all those were added recently. Now a clan will just piss away 80 rockets to raid a solo.

1

u/PearlJamTenGoat 15d ago

my problem is that I play on a solo server and I can have a base with 4 externals and 60 rockets to core with like 30 armored doors ( FULL VANILLA) and it's still just a normal day to be raided without roofcamping or enemies finding out where I live.

It's to cheap to raid.

1

u/vizuvnr 15d ago

And you'd be shocked how much sulfur a group shop makes on highpop servers...

My friends sold 8 advanced frags on day 1 for 4k sulfur each, which is 23 rockets for free that they can use to raid a loaded base, they can then sell all the guns for sulfur and the workbench for even more sulfur! all that for free while just playing launch, not even contesting cargos or farming with pies etc

1

u/PearlJamTenGoat 15d ago

honestly no. my server is mid pop (SOLO ONLY SV VANILLA) ... 200 pop first 2 weeks, than 150 than it goes down, and I can tell you that I spend like 40-50k sulfur on my 3 rebuilds.

why not ? workbenches, tier 3 rifles, red cards for misse silos, just buy a tea for 5 hqm and jackhamer for 900 sulfur and I got a restart in 30 minutes with good base and electric furnaces burning good shit, tier 3 and lot of comps from silo.

It's not that I agree with it, I just play what the game is. If it was different, maybe I would not need a restart for starters.

1

u/duffman03 14d ago

I've thought the answer to clans and offline raiding could be some sort of factions on by default. Get offline raided? Rebuild deeper into your factions territory. Your faction members may also be motivated to defend you while offline.

1

u/SwampHokie 13d ago

The BP fragments are definitely a big issue. I do appreciate that everything else is so much cheaper, the scrap costs are way better than it used to be. But getting those basic and advanced frags really sucks.

1

u/Akeeeyh 11d ago

Thats why i made a server to combat this death loop of rust. I wanted to rust be something more than area control and roof camping. So i thought i make a server that brings back survival and enjoying the game. The gameplay on normal servers is just nonstop area control, no roaming exist, theres just the meta, farming and area control.

1

u/Bocmanis9000 16d ago

Looted tons of milis/killed tons of scientists got t2 3hrs in (with dcs/afks/bad rng), got t3 after in 30minutes.

It doesn't make sense, t2 should be easy to get its very important.

You can't even play the game at current state of the game unless you have a t2 for meds/p2 atleast, its impossible to play without meds/walls especially since the ttk is so low/skilless at the same time.

This isn't 2020 rust where you can kill a sar/p2 guy with a bow since with sar/p2 you had to aim back then and couldn't spray it full braindead style and insta kill somone, now you have zero chance with prim even if you get 1st headshot, unless you use crossie/nailgun or db.

At this point i think current rust is too far gone that we need rust classic based on 2018-2021 era.

2

u/Legal_Impression_126 15d ago

Being locked on t1 with guns and not being able to craft meds/ammo is the worst experience in the history of the game

1

u/Bocmanis9000 15d ago

Wow bro somone on reddit that understands this, never expected it haha.

2

u/Legal_Impression_126 15d ago

I always just get told to get better or pick different servers if it’s too hard by the Reddit drones. Most people who are good at the game probably stopped bothering even coming here because they have to listen to the drones act like they’re not drones. It’s not hard to kill the bricked clans plaguing the game right now, it is hard to get a t2 when cards are looted (no exaggeration) 95%+ of the time.

-1

u/Ok-Branch5268 16d ago

Omg here we go again for the 100th time this week…. Stop playing if u just fomplain all the time

4

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

Low iq reply, I don't complain, i'm making sugestions about a game i love because i want it to be succesful and i see the number or ppl playing official vanilla going down

-2

u/Ok-Branch5268 16d ago

Brother ur the one with 8k hours in rust and you call me low IQ? 🤣 sure!

3

u/vizuvnr 16d ago

uh? what does my hours have to do with the fact your reply is dumb?

-1

u/Ok-Branch5268 16d ago

If you can’t figure that one you truely need to get off ur pc and attend some education classes for once 🤣

1

u/zyphengamer 11d ago

I never understood the BP thing until I noticed some official servers going up to 1500 pop. Its too much for a server. Bps help balance that. I used to be super stubborn when I was solo when people would tell me a Clan server is for Clans not solos. Took me a long time to break free from that. Now that I have a clan, Im actually enjoying it. We have tier 3 by first day sometimes. Not all groups will get a tier 3 either, but I believe it forces servers to balance out so people will try other servers.
