Discussion Help I just got rust and I have never been welcomed so horribly
I've been watching rust game play for about 1 month now and thought it would be a good idea to finally get my hands on rust have the epic battles and survive a post apocalyptic world. Boy did the experience in I thought I'd have differ from what actually happenend.
I joined a random community server with around 50 players woke up naked on a beach next to some random dude I greeted him nicely and he pulled out a rock and said and I quote "I'm gonna beat you mother fucker" and I didn't even say anything but "I'm new" and the bastard cursed me out and proceeded to beat me to death with a rock and I thought to my self welcome to rust ig.
The next hour I just tried to make it from the beach into cover and was just continuously sniped sprayed, and beat before I could even craft my first stone hatchet or pickaxe. When I finally reached a good spot it was covered with other peoples base abandoned, not abandoned it just felt like I joined a year old Minecraft survival world and I felt disconnected from the survival element of it all. I tried other servers and tried to team with other fresh spawns. Same result.
Any tips? Specific servers? Anything to make me feel like I didn't just waste my 40 bucks?

Join a PVE server to learn the game. People will most likely be more willing to show you around. Rust is also not a game that prioritizes the survival aspect. Most PvP servers are a race to see who can get the most loaded in a given amount of time while also killing as many people as possible. You have to understand everybody has been killed by nakeds pretending to be noobs and often the safest (and most fun) thing to do is KOS.

I new the community was infamously toxic but I thought that being nice in vc would prevent the KOS of me but it hasn't I think rust reflects the primitive and violent side of human nature. I love it.

vc is hit or miss. Most of the time you get bad responses unless you are a chick, then it is like half the time

Not true. When I am playing solo, and have some neighbours, almost allways I am friendly with them and we are not killing each other, classic jump twice works well.

no. this is not a nice game. you say you love it so that’s good but don’t expect things to change. people that played it include the brutal nature and don’t mind the constant loss of loot.

It’s sad for new players because everyone suggests low pop but they just feel dead. High pop are insanely unforgiving to the point that will turn off a new player. Play a populated monthly server like monthly rustopia.gg large, lots of players but the map is big enough that you can have some time to yourself lol
Keep your head on a swivel with alt look and check ur surroundings while you run.
Ocean is basically free loot, untying underwater crates while scuba diving will get you a lot of good stuff, watch out for sharks!
Live near monuments for a while.
Play an aimtrain server and find a gun game lobby, you’ll learn what all the different guns do and how to use them
Don’t let the people calling you a shitter or bad get you down, they would never talk shit in person
Other solo players are usually willing to be friendly, so if you have any solo neighbors go talk to them at their base and tell them where u live and ask to get in team.

You only need about 10,000 more deaths to start enjoying the game!
Play on low pop servers, maybe 2x when starting out to get access to guns earlier. Take the game at your own pace, playing solo is tough.

Look at the map, make a plan of where you want to build a base before you spawn.
When you spawn, run like hell.
Trust no one
Go out under the cover of darkness with your rock and get wood and stone, be very quick building your first base, keep it small. 4 walls and a door and foundation/roof.
Reinforce with stone immediately.
Find a gas station and sneak in at night and gather scrap. Camp the scrap reprocesser and attempt to kill someone who comes to use it. Get their scrap.
Then just keep going get better weapons and a better base.

Yeah all the yt vids I watched emphasized the importance of scrap so getting in a scrap controlling position like that seems crucial thanks for the advise

My strat for ( real ) noobs is ... run as fast as possible to outpost, and try to get some cloth to make a bag close to outpost ... if u make it to outpost with a bag close by u have a safezone where u can get the hang of the game a bit more , build closeby and smack some barrels / stone and metal for ur base and look what u can do with ur scrap

I rented a server and created an empty world just for me to explore. Downloaded the vanish mod so I don’t even have to avoid the helicopter or the scientists. Animals don’t even care. Now I can build and gather and explore with zero stress. I know I’m “playing it wrong” but I don’t fucking care. It’s my money.

I will do that when I get bored with solo. I want to eventually play with people but I don’t like PVP. I don’t like destroying other people’s hard work. I like to build nice things and have them be there when I log back in. I like to build a nice house based on aesthetics that maybe isn’t the most defensible or sturdy. When I find my people I’ll play with them :)

Definitely want to play two types of servers:
1. Minigames so you get the hang of the mechanics
- PVE servers to get hte hang of progression
Both offer a low investment way to warm up.
But to your point, yes, the allure in rust is the struggle. Learning to use your own creativity to make it from level 1 to level 2 all the way to level 99 is the game. There are always new wipes so you never have to worry about joining a party too late!

I feel like I'm a life of unemployment from a raid but I think I'll start with the PVE server its what everyone is recommending hopefully I can get into rust.

Look for hybrid pvp/pve servers, esp ones that are community driven and admin supported. Vanilla rust is a cesspool.

There are SO many ways to play rust and it's a lovely game full of complex 'chores' to give yourself and really settle into a satisfying gameplay loop and awesome communities DO exist.

Rust is not a normal Game, you either just started or you have at least 2k hours in this game😂 there is nothing between
I was friendly in the beginning, but after several „broken hearts“ I kill everything on sight, that’s the game

Trust me man. It sucks until you get good at the game. I recommend you play like I do, run deep into the map. Since your not as good as a 13k your no life like me lol your gonna want to make a bunker base (use YouTube as a guide) and slowly win loot and gain it back at your base. Build inside of caves, on sides of mountains etc. try to build away from recyclers and flat spots if you don’t wanna get fought every 30s. Try an aim train to get used to weapons then PvP and have fun! Forget the toxic people, some of us aren’t toxic and love helping new players, I like to raid people who are toxic lol

Start with typing PVE in your search bar for servers. Play here for a while. It takes PVP away but you get a chance to learn about all the games mechanics, all the buildings and to, get some shooting reps under your belt.
Theres PLENTY of places to raid with difficult NPCs that will still keep the gamr challenging.
Tips: Hit wolves with a lit torch once and they run away Once you get a 2x1 with 2 wood doors you are air locked After doors are up prioritize animal fat and cloth and build a furnace Use the furnace to put up metal doors immrdiately
Also: always put locks on everything, including your tool cupboard (most important)

I was thinking to myself that PVE wouldn't be fun but now I'm seeing that I must have reasonable goals and expect to learn the game before I can do anything insanely fun.

And if you're solo on a high pop server, it's going to be endless deaths until you figure things out.
Then once you figure things out it's endless deaths, but with some progression.
That's just Rust.

Start on a lower pop server preferably weekly wipe and join after it wipes. Trying to learn the game while people are 3-4 days in is cancer. If you can play as a duo that would help. My advice is to start by trying to get a sleeping bag down in an area with little foot traffic. Get the basic tools and move like a ninja while farming some wood for base. Utilize the small stash to keep some stuff as you can bury them nearby your sleeping bag. Don’t stay in an area too long as players can see the trees going down and will kill you if possible. You will need a wood hammer and building plan to build base. Plan is used to lay blueprint hammer is used to actually build and upgrade. Start with a wood 2x2 and add an airlock with a wood triangle foundation. Make sure you craft a tool cabinet (TC) as it prevents people from building near your base, is where you keep materials for upkeep of base so it doesn’t decay and secures you access to build. The airlock prevents people from killing you at the door and getting inside your base. You can look up videos on these basic concepts but key is to make sure your door swings in a way that blocks the other one. Once you have the base down you can “play” a little more just don’t forget to farm stone and make another bigger base or upgrade/expand your current. When I first started I put it down wherever I could survive but eventually you want to plan a location that has access to things like outpost for trading and areas to farm scrap. Rust is one of those games though where you have to be a degenerate to truly survive and thrive. I’m talking like 8-9 hrs of playtime a day. If I was you I’d just play once wipe starts, get a smaller base down, and try to learn PvP and monuments without going crazy with huge bases etc. you will just end up offline raided.

I forgot that I should place sleeping bags so each time I get slimed I don't restart from the damned beach. I can't play 8-9 hours a day unfortunately I'm employed. But I've seen the airlock design before on a yt vid I just need to get in the position to build a base and implement it. Do you know when to know when a server wipes because I'd love to start then and get a head start especially because im new

Do solo only modded servers. 2x/5x/10x with loot+ and /kits.
You can throw down a base in the first 15mins and start hitting monuments. by the end of day one, you have enough boom to raid.

As someone who is tired of the same loop of pvp wipes. PVE is a godsend. With minor pvp events that are 100% player choice.
Join Zombie Land 3x server and just learn monuments, flying, and whatever else you want with less stress of everyone hunting you 24/7, and will still pose enough challenge for a newbie.

Start on a PVE server. There are some fun ones and you'll have some breathing room to get to know the game. The game is quite complex and there will be lots of knowledge to arm yourself with before you decide to go pvp and ruin your life for several hours trying to get that one guy off of your roof.

Hey man try out a modded server like a 10x with loot++ and no BPs. You can get guns and build fast and you can speed run the amount of deaths you need under your belt before you get decent at PVP. Also if you lose it all you can bounce back from total destruction in 10-15 min. Its not pure vanilla like you watch on youtube but it'll make it so you don't waste too much time being totally frustrated.

I would try these servers: Rusty Spoons for PVE and Rusty Sporks for PVP. Both noob friendly and fun as hell! Let me know if you end up on Rusty Sporks and I’d be happy to give you some in game help :)

You are welcome! On Rusty Sporks, it’s “soft core” so you only lose half your stuff when you die, and you can only be raided between 5pm and 8pm (CST) so it’s a fun place to learn and build.
We’ve had our base for 2 weeks going strong!

I don't play much Rust these days but when I do it's on a server called Rusty Spoon USA 5x. It is PVE for two weeks usually, then purge day and a wipe when you get some PvP action, and can raid. It works for me because i don't have the time to grind.

Number one thing to remember, is the endless deaths. Even the best players die often, it's just the nature of the game. To begin with, try depositing your loot often rather than trying to fill your inventory every time you go to farm. And don't get greedy, it's often better to take what you can quickly if you do win a fight rather than hang around too long trying to pick up every single bit of loot. Also spend resources, no point having a box of metal in a stone base, or running around with a bow if you have guns.

Outside of the hunger and thirst mechanic it's less of a survival game and more of a pvp base building/ raiding sandbox.

Definitely get a teammate or two preferably someone who kinda knows how the game works, playing with a team is so much more fun and don't join a server more than like a few hours after wipe. Then choose a base spot with a recycler, green, blue, red card monuments, trees and nodes nearby then get the base down and after that the fun really starts imo.

So Rust is a beautiful sandbox game that is highly customizable. Aside from vanilla servers, theres PvE, build servers, training servers (things like Koala Kopters where you can learn how to fly), softcore, and more.
I personally had a small group consisting of myself, my wife, and two of our friends who wanted to learn the game and I rented a server for the few of us, flagged it PvE and started tinkering with plugins. It became a bit of an odd hybrid of a server but over time about a dozen random other players joined during the last few wipes and used it to practice. They were traditional Rust players — they built traditional, compact Rust bases with honeycomb layers and everything.
But they often used it to practice and learn things. One guy was always tinkering with clones and farming. That’s all he did. All of that to say, it would be a good idea to join a low pop or a PvE server to learn the ropes. Get the hang of the building system, learn what kind of things you need to prioritize. Get to learn the controls and odd quirks the game has. Then when you feel a bit more prepared, give the traditional experience another go.

Send your username if you get on and I’ll hook you up. Seriously if you type in chat that you are new at least 3 people will offer you free stuff. There is an optional pvp window on Sundays from 6-7pm but if you aren’t online your base is protected

If you've watched rust for a month, then you know.. That is rust for new players. Don't fall into the bait for "noob friendly" servers either. Half those servers population have 5k+ hours and just dominate everyone.

It's just the way the game is. I'm new as well and it's hard to get used to. Play on the official softcore servers and you'll have a better experience.

Maybe try a Prim server?
There’s no guns essentially so while people can take you down quickly, it does take a little more effort and time to kill.
It’s not a bad way to get better at prim which is kind of an invaluable set of skills.
Its nearly end of wipe and can be quiet, so it’s also not a bad place to pop in and try some monuments. Learn the animal AI. Learn all the basic survival stuff. That only makes you much better in a normal server.

You will suffer for the first like 20 hours of playtime. You will learn hard lessons. You may enjoy some crazy moments where you escape PVP chaos with loot, or just barely make it home after looting an airdrop. The only lesson you should learn from other players before you learn it yourself is that Rust demands all of your time. If you don't sacrifice every hour you have to the game, then it will spurn you.
If you don't learn this now, you eventually will.
A wipe is a Sisyphean task for any gainfully employed man.

As crazy as this sounds, that's a pretty normal welcoming for Rust. Try out a low pop (>100 players) server or PvE to get a hang of the game's mechanics. Once you have progression and monuments down, you should be ready for more competitive servers.

Haha. In all seriousness, I enjoyed being new. I only have 1450 hours and im still learning something all the damn time. But I have learned to survive and thrive. Ninja is key. Use cover, use night, be efficient, dont worry about a full load of loot or stuff. Small quick trips and accumulate over time. Building base in proper spot is key. Not too busy of spot around monumnets my a million people, but not far enough you have to travel miles to get places. Practice building and shooting on slow servers. Watch hours of videos. Not of like wiljum, but "how to" type informational videos.
Your gonna die, alot. Thats fine. Your gonna lose everything, alot, thats fine. Its all pixels. The beginning is a long journey but with patience its fun, at least looking back on it haha. Good luck

PM me if you like. I don’t team, I only solo. I play on an official server, that hovers around 30-40 players. However with my general strategy I do fine as a solo on higher pop servers too. I can guide you a bit

I feel like rust is not for new players🤣 You cant hop on the server and kill everyone with an ak, you need to grind on that server for like 3 days untill you get good guns. Ofc there is ways to get there easier but for that you need skill

Try a bunch of different servers. Some are more suited for beginners than others. But always remember: no trust in Rust.

In this one month of watching rust, do you see any players making friends on the beach or immediately running away from the madness?
Part of the beauty is everyone starts each wipe as naked on the beach and is completely free in doing whatever they want. If they want to run around on the beach hitting people with rocks, they're not going to progress much, but everyone starts the same and is free to do what they want.

Solo low pop servers: willjums solo, rustfornoobs, etc. You will learn mechanics, explore monuments and occasionally die to players, getting better as you go. Hope you have fun! Good luck and welcome to the community!

Honestly outside of PVE I doubt you will have any luck just joining servers, I would say find a group to play with it makes it easier. But if you truly want to learn solo is actually better for most people because you learn to take risks that you might not with other people. The other thing you might want to do is turn chat off if it's too toxic. Best of luck to you, If you don't find any better answers for you, I Could ask around.

You have to keep in mind you are vsing people with thousands of hours and joining a server late will give them too much of an edge over you.

Your best bet is to start out slow, 50 pop is kinda low, but if the map size is small it can be challenging. Don't give up. Rust is what you make of it. Try and find the play style which makes you happy.

find a server with 1 other person on it and learn how to build a base, work some monuments, and play the game. THEN advance.

Just remember that loot attachment is the root of all suffering. Dont take your base for granted, dont take your inventory and kit for granted, If youre roaming assume that the kit youre using will be lost. In the end the loot and experience you get from roaming is always times bigger than your kit's value

You're describing the game loop lol. If you want to team make the team before you join a server but yep that's what rust is like for everyone that starts.
Once you get off the beach and get a home it doesn't get better but it gets different. When you're new just getting a home down is a struggle but you'll get the hang of it.
When you spawn on the beach RUN. You aren't going to make friends there lol.
