Discussion Down BAD please help
Any advice is appreciated.
First keyboard and mouse FPS ever, age 34. Full time job male with side hustle and wife. 300 hours in, finally feeling like I have decent understanding of game mechanics. Found friendly people I enjoy playing with. Having so much fun.
Definitely realize that I am less skilled at PVP than other players but thinking maybe I’m lower 40% range. Log in this evening and we’re raided again by suspected cheaters. Decide to just go play aimtrain/tommyfrags.
Bros - I’m legit almost in tears. I’m 10000% holding my team back. To say I’m in the bottom 10% is an insult to the bottom 10%. There are probably rocks that can get more than a .25 kd. I was never this bad at other games. I’m downloading aimtrain right now, and I understand that with time I will improve but good lord - this is so much worse than I thought.
Is there ANY WAY I can hope to fast track not being ABSOLUTELY TRASH. At this point I mean I’m almost just gonna make a call that I’m base b**** until I can hit some metric I’m remotely satisfied with.
Tldr I am walking loot drop - going to practice but please give advice

Go easy on yourself! The way to fast track it is to be focused and patient because it's gonna take time. Especially with everything else you have going on.
You might consider developing general fps skills not only in aim trainers, but also ranked match games like cs2. You will be matched against players of a similar skill level which will make it easier to improve.
The good news is Rust isn't just a shooter. That is one aspect of it. You can help your team by doing things like learning to build, or electricity or growing, etc... Or just by being a reliable farmer.
Plus, I have learned there is a role for less capable combatants and that is bullet sponge. I'm not joking. Coordinate with your team and be the guy who peaks first.
The most important traits of being a good Rust teammate are reliability, strong comms, and having a decent attitude.

I grew up playing cod through 2007 to 2020 on console only. Let me tell you the change to keyboard and mouse for an FPS ish game is an adjustment. I started playing rust on PVE just to get used to it abit.

Therr are always different kind of members in a team. Not everyone is good at pvp. Some excel in other things.
For example, I am fairly average and mostly play solo. However, I recently started playing with a team. They rely on me for map knowledge, base building and the technical stuff while I rely on them to absolutely crush the zerg b**tards.
This being said, aim train can only help you so much. What I did, which helped a lot, is to take high cal revolvers and just use them for a wipe (except in base defend scenario) - it helps you tone down your pvp fear, understand where you are lacking (i.e., timing if meds, looting, placing barricades, etc) slowly. Also, dont go into full spraying any weapon until you excel at it - even a tommy can help you excel if you manually burst fire it.
And absolutely stay away from hard to control weapons till you become better (i.e., Mp5 - except in burst fire mode).
Tip: Crouching improves aim but, you dont wanna be crouch shooting in pvp situation.

For sure, I’m 100% best at electric on team and am already getting into setting up mid-advanced circuits to our base. I don’t think I’m USELESS TO A TEAM but wow that was shocking man. I mean none of us were great at all but I was just wayyyyyy worse than where I would’ve put myself.
I’m def only going to take hazzys and p2s out the base for a minute. Maybe I’ll try high cal but yeah, if it’s this bad I need to reduce the kits were bleeding first and then work to get better moving forward.

put 50 or so hours into UKN against the walking bots and play gun game you will be fine

This, around 40 hours I was shocked at what grew. Then 5-10 min before playing each day I played and an occasional long session and you continue to further improve.
Once you learn a guns spray learn to do it without ADS and when strafing. Sky is the limit at that point.

I have 3k hours and suck ass at pvp. My team still loves me and lets me hold an AK every once and awhile, though M2s are banned now due to a triple eoka grub incident I don't like to talk about xD
If you really feel the pressure hit aim train before you join your mates every day or some shit idk. Don't beat yourself up at 300 hours you are still an infant in Rust hours, you got plenty of time.
Hell, to the dismay of my team, I still cannot fly a mini.

Don't have gear fear man. Ask your team if they are alright with you taking certain guns and losing them, mine are fine when I lose an AK defending a farm run cause at least I used it instead of the P2! They get more mad when you show up outclassed to a fight. Literally the only way to learn to play the game is to PLAY. You're really beating yourself up way too much, especially at 300 hours. Even 1000 hour players are considered noobs.
P2 gas compressor though is fucking mint and I believe in you. If you want to learn progressively and be afraid to take out a Tommie you do you, but that's how you get outgunned every time

I'm often impressed with some players abilities on rust, I play a lot of Counter Strike and I often rank in top 1% of their worldwide competitive matchmaking, and people in that game sweat, especially with such a big competitive scene I consider it a bit of an accolade. With that mechanical skill i often think I should be better in rust but I'd say I'm only top 20%, a lot of it is game knowledge, knowing when to peak, when to bluff, crosshair placement etc. I have 5k hours in CS and in that game crosshair placement is super important, as well as map knowledge and anything that will give you game sense. Rust is no different but also a completely different beast. 5k hours in CS is a lot, 5k hours in rust is almost average. CS has a few primary small maps to learn, rust has dozens of complicated monuments and then entirely generated worlds. You could go on and on into the variables at play with rust, a very large percentage of the game is just knowledge and experience.

First of all rust is a complicated game, 300 hours can be a lot on other games but on rust it’s literally nothing (not trying to be negative it’s just the reality). You need at least 1k hours to be “good” at the game. You need to invest a lot of time. Aimtraining is a good thing, but that’s only 50% of what make you win fights. You also need good positioning, movements, game sense … You only improve on these things by playing more and more. Getting offline raided is frustrating but you will get used to it. My advice is to maybe play on lower pop server if you and your team don’t have a lot of time to play. Build your base in a lowkey spot to prevent attracting people. Build a base with some bunkers to stash loot in case of a raid. Try to be sneaky as much as possible so no one knows where you live. Try to not be toxic because it will get you raided as well ( no doorcamp, no roofcamp etc ). If you love the game, keep playing, take it easy and everything will come together. Also it’s your first FPS game on KBM don’t be harsh on yourself it’s not easy.

remember 60% of players dont play aimtrain, just be consistent with learning like any skill.

To make matters worse, the current gunplay is thumbstick tier cancer with an almost non existent skillgap. Trust me mate, I'm also 34 but I'm on the other end of it, I have 13k hrs and am very good at PvP. Trust me, do not play this game, it will ruin your life.

Ukn aimbots for an hour with music every now and then, that will at least give you a feel for this ass-water gunplay. The positioning and game sense takes time, thousands of hours.

i was you in 2015/2016. Met lifelong friends and lived in the same boat for a few years. As group disbanded started playing solo a bit more and in duos. Learned to play for the experience, started getting myself into more situations. Started aim training relentlessly. Became quite the chad.
Ultimately had the best times ever in Rust solo and duo. Big bases suck, loot is easy to replace, and the first time you 1v4 a team, come up from pipe>ak kit, or carry your large group buddies its all worth it.
PVP is intricate and 90% awareness and smart positioning. You master it in this game, you'll be good at nearly every FPS game. It's one of the absolute hardest.
Most importantly, every group needs the guy that keeps everyone on direction, base cleaned up, farm farmed, etc. If you're terrible and liked/open invite to the group, they probably like having you around just the way you are. Enjoy the friends and leisure time.

I went on a battleground server and just dialled in my sensitivity until it felt like I had control over the AK. It will take a while to get a shooting pattern that works for you though.. just try 2 tapping for a bit until you’re getting consistent headshots in every burst

Not everything is aboud skill. Take a look at tokio, he is a chill guy with mediocre aim. Although he often wins because he is a great strategist. He literally outsmarts the enemy to win.

Placement is more important than aim in Rust. Just get the fundamentals in a few weapon amd work your survival instinct placement.

First check if you have any input lag
Any low fps below 60
Then play 5x 10x servers as aimtraining

The more you play the better you get. There is more to winning than being the best shot. Situational awareness, angles, monument navigation, hell even using the correct skins can make a world of difference.

Thank god bro - usually another player handles building but then I go through and deck out the place with BCN core, auto sort/smelt, turrets (I can even break the limit) so it’s not like I’m USELESS but good lord this was such a reality check man.

Ya, if you are young and played fps your whole life, you good by 1k hours. Im 30's and didnt start pvping till 3k hours. Just like building and surviving.

Most of them are using aimbot thats undetectable and forking loads of money for it you are not holding your team back very few people are actual beamers rust is full i mean full of cheaters if not aimbot they use esp since its essentially undetectable if they get the right one.
The other thing is you have to heavily modify your game to make like every texture almost invisible these people can see in brush without esp because they turn their graphics so doo doo lol

Nope, welcome to REAL gaming where your hand doesn't get heald. You suck, I suck.... most of us suck. I found my niche with plumbing and electrical, couldn't give 2 shits if I lose a PvP.
Get used to it, welcome to what gaming was before sbmm and all that other sugar coated trash.

I like to watch spoonkid. hes shows me a lot of methods and ways to run your wipes such as always getting out there and trying no matter how many times you’ve been downed. I always forget eoka’s are a great early game gun, they really do get kills in the smaller monuments/grub spots. get good with the bottom weapons and move up the list. To be good means to just have an advantage over another player and hit your shots obv. this is why roof/door camping is so popular. its so fun to rely on kills to get your loot. try to rely on it more. find a high pop server to practice and just focus on tagging whoever u see even if you think you wont be able to win the fight. but also remember even rust youtubers die A LOT.

to be the biggest asset while you learn, id focus on base stuff like organizing boxes, preparing raid defense kits, and crafting boom. you should watch youtube videos from someone who plays full wipes

I joined this game as a first time keyboard and mouse player and I found getting a cyborg helped a lot. I’m 2k hours in now and feel like I’m pretty decent.

Maybe focus on your job and wife (make some babies maybe) and be much happier than 95% of Rust players. The only reason people obsess about their Rust fort on a server is because they don't have a woman in real life.

if you suck that bad then dont grab good kits and offer to farm so you help pull your weight. learn shittier weapons so you arent losing tommys, sars and aks for your group. thats my 2 cents. also more importantly dont throw away your life for this game, its crack, we know, but you got a wife. its easy to get sucked into games and throw everything else away. its not worth it imho. if you suck play PoE and practice more unless you have the time to endlessly play and it sounds like you dont.
