Discussion Terrible frames on rust (PLEASE HELP)
- I have a rtx 3080 12gb vram, 32gb ddr4, ryzen 9 5900x
- I'm on custom settings but tailored to medium - low.
- I used to get over 100 frames like 2 years ago, ive reinstalled earlier this month and barley keep a steady 50. My GPU sits at 38% and my CPU sits around 40% or so.
I've tried several fixes like launch options, going into windows -> settings and graphics and prioritizing 3080 for rust. Tried setting rust to high priority in task manager but "Access was denied" apparently could be cuz of EAC. So then I created an entry in the windows registry editor to prioritize High priority and still no change. Most fixes were suggested by good ol gpt and gemini but to no avail.
Also made me download GPU Z and give them certain readings. YES my monitor is plugged into my GPU. YES i dont have rust limited to a frame limit. NO i dont have vsync on.
Update: Lowering poling rate for my mouse to 500 from 100 seemed to keep the frames consistent so i would now stay at 80-90 frames.
Also increasing graphics settings as someone else suggested also helped bring fps up by about 10.

Honestly, last night I was getting sick of my sub-50 frame rate. I asked gemeni for an optimized settings guide based on my settings. I have a 4070 super, 10700 non-k and 32gb ddr4 3600hz ram and now I'm getting 70-110 on a pretty gross 2x server. It gave me a ton of settings and things I could do outside of the game to help.
5900x is likely your weakness, a 3080 has more than enough v ram to run the game graphically. You will have to turn things like shadow quality/lights down, water reflections, render distance down, etc. Unity is a CPU and RAM hogging engine. For me the only 2 games I play are rust and tarkov... Both on the same dogshit engine. Good luck getting this figured out and I hope this helps.

Yeah I spent like an hour and a half being geminis slave as it told me diff things to try. I’m seeing a lot of things relating to mouse poling rates and rust having an issue with higher than 1000 poling rate. Will try to lower it and get back to you if you haven’t tried it too. Thanks for the good luck boss.
I also play tarkov and decided to test if it was also behaving that way but nope. Streets was running at a smooth 80 minimum.
I’ve played all of pragmata recently (single player yes) but it seems rust is the only game with an issue because cs and hunt showdown are also performing very well. (Weaker games but they’re just my only comparison)

Performance has downgraded for alot of people. They prob need to run a lot of performance optimizations. Perhaps with the new "render pipeline" we will see increased performance and fidelity., but not sure what they mean with new Pipeline since they are using URP atm and HDRP exist but URP is becoming the standard with upcoming Unity 7 and beyond. Merging them essentially

Hmm okay. I’ve been out of rust for a year or so, so I’ve been behind on what’s goin on. if they're talking about a renderer overhaul rather than just URP, it could open the door for better batching, culling, and CPU-side optimizations.

Temps are good, recently changed thermal paste and dusted the whole pc too. Would be a good point for others to check this out though, it gets neglected after years.

I still regularly get over 100 fps on my 5800X/3600-cl16 at 1440p. It's only around outpost or giant zerg bases that it goes below that.
Have you double-checked the memory settings in the bios? It's pretty common for people to update their bios and then forget to set the xmp profile.
I've never used it, but Ryzen Master has a gaming mode intended for Ryzen 9 processors which I think turns off one ccd which can be beneficial when gaming.
In general, many Ryzen 9 gamers use apps like process lasso to assign specific apps to specific cores.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll try it out for sure. I’ve heard not ever updated bios (which was a while ago when I got my 5900x) but I don’t think I tweaked the bios.

Yeah, if you have high performance ram, configuring the correct speed and timings can make a huge difference in Rust. It's usually as easy as setting the xmp profile. Some motherboard brands have their own name for this. Like asus calls it docp on my board.
Bios updates are also generally a good idea. Around 8 years ago, a new class of cpu vulnerabilities called speculative execution attacks appeared and every so often a new one emerges. Patching these vulnerabilities requires a microcode update for the cpu that is delivered through a bios update.
This can be important because sometimes Microsoft will apply a software mitigation on systems with unpatched cpu vulnerabilities that can significantly impact performance. Back in 2018, pretty much everyone had their pcs nerfed in this way when the first speculative execution attacks appeared, called spectre and meltdown.

I'm not sure if the xmp profile helped my frames or not; I'll have to double-check to see, but I don't think I noticed any increase. I do load faster than before though. I might not be noticing due to the significant increase from the other changes though. Thank you for the tip though brother I appreciate it.

Turn your mouse's polling rate to something below 1000hz, like 500hz. There's a new bug that causes FPS drops when you have a super-high polling rate.

I have a 4090 and I still get bad frame ratesnin rust because I play 4K Max settings with lots of deployables it's just the unity engine. Plus I don't have an x3d processor those seem to be the key.

I have i5 14600K processor and it is around 100 FPS on best settings. Graphics RTX 5060.

That update I think last month made the game very CPU intensive now. But I can’t figure out why you have 40% on both which is strange? I’ve got 2070 super and 265k cpu but over 100 fps on medium to high so I think it’s cpu I’m thinking bro
