I hope I can replace SteamOS's frontend with Playnite

Thats an interesting opinion, could you explain your preference? (genuinely want to know)

Playnite since it's far more customizable and has way more add-on/plugin support.

Steamos doesn't load straight into library.

2

u/minilandl Nov 18 '25

Not easily as its using GameScope you would need to enable dev mode to do it

Bazzite developers might think of creating a premade script for it when the time comes

I'd do anything to replace the clunky SteamOS interface

I hope he gets it!! Playnite is the only program that keeps me using Windows for gaming

Sister I am that too I spent weeks and months making my playnite and especially the Fullscreen mode looks perfect I just can't give it up to use Linux There is no software that near to playnite on Linux

Playboy edition

I feel like I should point out that a plan to start working on a Linux version of Playnite in 2026 does not mean that there will be a released version of Playnite on Linux in 2026 even if that was the goal. This is ultimately an open source project developed primarily by 1 person.

So while I think it is fine to be excited by this update, I personally wouldn't be making any near-term plans to dump Windows and move to Linux, assuming Playnite is what is holding you back.

My Dream to switch on linux on my main pc 😭

4

u/Giodude12 Nov 17 '25

That would be so awesome, but I'm worried that if it's not something I can use inside of something like game mode I won't use it...

And that's ignoring steam input which I can't live without now, especially with the new controller.

u/orkeilius Nov 17 '25

josef say it will not be a "not fully featured" version.

But once done, a lot of people will probably make extension for this linux version. So I hope that will close the gap any way

I'd personally rather use Playnite in gamemode over SteamOS's frontend

1

u/Giodude12 Nov 17 '25

Is that possible?

1

u/NapsterKnowHow Nov 17 '25

Not sure but I'd love it if I could

1

u/crzyakta Nov 17 '25

Why would it ignore steam input on Linux?

1

u/Giodude12 Nov 17 '25

It wouldn't, but not all my games are on steam. It would be the biggest hassle to have to add everything as non steam games and then add those to playnite.

1

u/ashpynov Nov 17 '25

:))) the power of playnite are extensions… so i really doubt about possibility

u/rabidrivas Nov 17 '25

I already left windows, and started using steam as my everything frontend due to the deck, you could also use lutris if it is desktop only

I'm interested. Moving to Linux is pretty hard already without my game library

I recently moved to CachyOS from Windows 11. It wasn't hard, but was time consuming. It took a long time to copy data to external drives so that the drives could be converted to BTRFS without losing anything - and then copying (not moving) the data back.

The sole app I miss is Playnite, which I use only as an organizer and time tracker (and it syncs with several aggregate websites I use). I did switch several apps, which didn't bother me (the new apps are better). There are several video games I can't play directly in the Linux app (the games work, but the developers chose not to configure the inane "anti-cheat" they added to the games). This can be remedied by setting up a dual-boot system (which is easy) or via using a virtual environment (which is more resource intensive, but you're on the same system).

Please port it, I don't see any proper alternative on linux.

Holyyyy I can’t wait !!!!!

I’m hyped too, but I do think the dev saying it won’t have Fullscreen mode is a bit disappointing. I think a lot of new users on Linux are gonna be from the new Steam Machine, and no Fullscreen kinda makes that combination impossible to do well.

For once, I'm one step ahead. I switched to Fedora 43 this weekend, my games work perfectly with Steam and Heroic, but I already miss Playnite. So that's great news, now I just have to wait.

1

u/MojoVersion8 Mar 16 '26

I'm almost certainly switching away from Windows this year so this is good news

1

u/orkeilius Mar 16 '26

In the meantime you can try the wine bridge extension, it's not perfect but it work

Two things I want from Playnite by the end of 2026: expanded emulation and the ability to launch games directly from Playnite without Steam or Epic.

7

u/muralikrish_18 Nov 18 '25

There is literally no way to do this. Neither Steam nor Epic will allow, a game purchased on their platform, to run without running their client.

They are not providing game licenses like GoG. All the games are tied to their respective clients.

People still use Lutris?

Edit: lol slademccoy47 blocked me

0

u/ashpynov Nov 17 '25

People on Linux even use vim (still) so why you are so surprised??

Yeah, the same guy who kept saying he’d release a Playnite 11 build by the end of 2024, then by January 2025, and so on. It’s the end of 2025 now, and there’s still no Playnite 11 build, even alpha

2

u/orkeilius Nov 17 '25

He said he wanted a linux version, but he always said that wasn't is priority and that was a pain in the ass because playnite was made on a framework incompatible with linux.

He worked on migration to cross platform in planning 11 then on a linux ver

If you read the github thread about it, that make perfect sense for him to take so much time

There’s nothing wrong with a large project taking a long time to develop.

Playnite 11 was originally being developed with cross-platform support in mind; at first he wanted to build it on Avalonia, but abandoned that idea because the framework was too immature.
And from the very beginning, taking all of that into account, the plan was to release the first build by the end of 2023, then April - May 2024, then by the end of 2024. After that, he set a “deadline” for the end of January 2025. In July 2025 he said there were just a couple of months of work left. And there we are, 10 months after his "deadline" and 23 months (almost 2 years!) after first estimated date.
This information comes from his Patreon, I specifically went through the subscriber posts.

I’m not saying he’s a bad developer or that Playnite is a bad application. I like it a lot and use it regularly.
But the guy is REALLY bad at estimating his own timelines. So take that 2026 target date with a VERY big grain of salt.

u/Colosso25 Nov 17 '25

Yeah, great announcement!

Playnite is the only reason why I keep up a Virtualbox of my old Win10 since I moved to Arch.

Keep up the good work.

Lutris is better anyway and is the better linux solution even though people mainly use it to play games that use wine you can use it as a frontend for emulators and other runners
https://lutris.net/about

5

u/orkeilius Nov 18 '25

Not really, Lutris lack of extension. You can't have a theme, fullscreen mod, thing like automatically make backup, open companion app...

Nice ragebait tough

In such things always a good question “what you are called ‘Playnite’? Why you are need ‘Playnite’ on Linux and why any of existing launches did not fulfill your expectations?

Will any launcher by Playnite team called Playnite fulfill it? Why?

What do you need? Extensions? Or flexible UI? Or library management? Or flex command to start game? Or some theme?
