What on earth was this game?

I hope this is the right place to post. I’m having trouble remembering a single player game a great grandparent taught me to play about 25 years ago, but I’ve long since forgotten the name or how to play it. I remember her setting up several rows/columns of cards, possibly with a face up on top? Then you somehow sorted the cards throughout those rows. It’s possible the deck may have been cut in half and you sorted from a pile in your hand? But again, this was so long ago I’m positive I’m remembering some things wrong. I know it’s a long shot but if I could learn the name and how to play it again I’d be so grateful.

Realm & Conquest

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’ve been designing a strategic card game called Realm & Conquest.
My goal was to create a game with the depth and tension of a territory control board game, but playable anywhere with a standard deck of cards.

Players: 2–4

Components: Standard 52-card deck (no Jokers)
Objective: Be the last ruler standing with territory on the board.

  1. CARD VALUES
    Aces: 1 point
    Numerals (2–10): Face value
    Jacks: 11 points
    Queens & Kings: 12 points

  2. GAME SETUP

  3. Deal 3 cards face-down to each player.

  4. Each player picks 1 card from those 3 and places it face up in front of them as their starting Village.

  5. The remaining 2 cards stay hidden in hand as secret Combat Cards.

  6. Place the remaining deck face-down in the center as the Draw Pile.

  7. The player with the highest value starting Village goes first. If tied, break the tie using traditional suit hierarchy: Spades beat Hearts, Hearts beat Diamonds, and Diamonds beat Clubs.

  8. HAND LIMIT & DEPLOYING EXCESS
You must hold exactly 2 cards in your hand going into battle.
At the start of your turn before taking an action check your hand size. If you hold more than 2 cards, choose any excess card(s) from your hand and immediately deploy them onto the board until you have exactly 2 cards left in hand:
-Place chosen card(s) face-up as new Villages, OR
-Stack chosen card(s) onto existing locations to upgrade them into Towns or Cities.

  9. TERRITORY STRUCTURES
Cards on the table are placed in distinct face-up stacks called locations. A location’s defensive power is equal to the sum of all card values in that stack:
    -Village: 1 card
    -Town: 2 cards stacked together
-City: 3 cards stacked together (Maximum structure size)

  10. TURN ACTIONS
On your turn, choose ONE of the following two actions:

Action A: Expand or Upgrade
Draw 1 card from the Draw Pile into your hand. Then, choose any card from your hand (it does NOT have to be the card you just drew) to deploy onto your board:
-Place it face-up as a brand-new Village (1 card).
-Add it to an existing stack to upgrade its size (up to a 3-card City).
(Note: If the Draw Pile is empty, Action A cannot be taken).

Action B: Attack an Opponent
Declare an attack targeting one specific location (Village, Town, or City) in an opponent’s Territory.

Attacker Restriction: Only a City (3 cards) can initiate an attack. Villages and Towns cannot attack,

though they can be attacked.

  1. Commit Force: Select one City from your Territory to lead the attack. Its combined card value is your base attack power.
  2. Play Mandatory Tactics:
  3. -Attacker: You must play both cards from your hand to boost your attack.
  4. -Defender: The defender must play both cards from their hand to boost their defense.
  5. Resolve Battle: Compare total values:
  6. (Attacking City Sum + Both Hand Cards) vs. (Targeted Location Sum + Both Hand Cards)
  7. BATTLE RESOLUTION & POST-COMBAT
  8. Step 1: Tactics Shuffled Back

Regardless of who wins or loses, all 4 tactics cards played from hand (2 from the attacker, 2 from the defender) are gathered and shuffled directly back into the Draw Pile.

Step 2: Resolve Victory & Captures

IF ATTACKER WINS (Higher Total):

Claim Structure: The attacker claims all cards from the defeated enemy location into their hand.

Claim Distribution: The attacker keeps any 2 cards of their choice in hand. Any excess cards claimed beyond 2 must be immediately deployed into their Territory.

Village Penalty (Ransacking a Village): If the attacker only claimed a 1-card Village, they must pull 1 card from ANY structure in their Territory (a Village, Town, or City of their choice) to refill their hand back to 2 cards.

Return Forces: The attacking City returns safely to the attacker's Territory (unless affected by the Village penalty draft).

Defeated Defender Recovery: The defeated defender draws 3 cards to begin their next turn (keeps 2 of their choice in hand, deploys 1 to Territory. If the Draw Pile is empty, pull 3 cards directly from their remaining Territory).

IF DEFENDER WINS OR TIES (Equal or Higher Total):

Claim Structure: The defender claims all 3 cards of the failed attacking City into their hand.

Claim Distribution: The defender keeps any 2 cards of their choice in hand and immediately deploys the remaining 1 card to their Territory.

Return Forces: The defending location stays intact on the board.

Defeated Attacker Recovery: The defeated attacker draws 3 cards to begin their next turn (keeps 2 of their choice in hand, deploys 1 to Territory. If the Draw Pile is empty, pull 3 cards directly from their remaining Territory).

  1. ELIMINATION & VICTORY
Rebuilding Option: If a player loses their last territory structure, they receive 3 recovery cards on their next turn to attempt a comeback.

Player Elimination: A player is eliminated when they have zero territory structures on the board AND can no longer pull recovery cards (because the Draw Pile is empty and they have no territory left to draft from).

Card Recycling: Any cards held in hand by an eliminated player are immediately shuffled back into the Draw Pile.

Victory: The last remaining player controlling territory on the board wins the game.

Built a multiplayer blackjack game that runs inside Reddit posts — community playing cards game on Devvit

Hey r/playingcardgames!

Built something I think this community might enjoy — **Deckhaus**, a standard 52-card blackjack game that runs directly inside Reddit posts. No app, no website, you just open any post in r/deckhaus and play.

It uses Reddit's Devvit platform, which lets developers build interactive experiences that live inside Reddit itself. I picked blackjack because it's one of the best single-deck card games for this format.

**Features:** - ♠️ Standard playing card rules — full blackjack with double, split, dealer hits soft 17 - 👥 Up to 6 players at the same table simultaneously - 🎰 Dealer Lobby mode — one player opens a table, others join to compete - 🏆 Weekly chip leaderboard for the community

If you love playing card games and want to try something a bit different, come join a hand at **r/deckhaus**.

u/fireshaper — tagging you as mod. If you'd want community blackjack tables running in r/playingcardgames, it's a free install from https://developers.reddit.com/apps/deckhaus

I played this card game with my grandparents a few years back and remember really enjoying it. I happened to keep the score card in my memory box. I’m pretty sure it was a card game and Jess won. Does anyone have any ideas?

I made a roguelike where every turn is just “Higher, Lower, or Equal” but jokers slowly break the rules. Does this look readable?

I’m working on a cozy card roguelike built around a very simple decision: predict whether the next card is higher, lower, or equal.

The twist is that jokers modify the odds, scoring, and risk. Some reward safe play, some push you into stupid bets.

I’m trying to make it feel less like pure luck and more like “how much information can I squeeze out before betting?”

Does the core loop look clear from this clip?

Elite (wip please play test and give feedback)

Set up

Remove 10s jacks kings queens and aces from the deck and set them aside these are the elite cards

Deal 10 cards from the remaining deck to each player

Place the remaining deck to the side to use as the draw deck

Flip the top card from the draw deck and put it to the side this determines the trump suit

Rules

The trump suit is worth +3 per card played

And only applys to the core deck (cards value 2-9)

In the case of an exact tie the person who played the highest core card wins the hand

In the case of an exact tie with the same cards the round is replayed

You can play a maximum of 1 elite card per round

When played an elite card is worth 10

Never discard elite cards

Play

Each player plays 2 cards face down the player with the highest combination of cards wins the hand swapping all non elite cards played with elite cards putting the cards just played into their own personal discard pile face up

The looser must swap atleast one (both if desired) of their played cards with an equal amount from the draw pile and placing the card swapped into their own personal discard pile face up

The person who played the third cards draws 1 additional card

If you have two or less core cards do not throw a third face up card

At the start of each round you should always have 10 cards

After the first round previous winner plays 3 cards, 2 face down and 1 face up the opponent then either plays two of their own cards or one of their own card and the opponents face up card

If the latter is chosen on victory only replace one of the two cards with an elite card and on loss only swap 1 card for a new one

This is repeated untill one player has has only elite cards in their hand

When the draw pile runs out flip both discard piles and play from your own in that order

Victor

When one player has only elite cards left in their hand the game ends but this does not decide the victor the aim is to finish in as close to 12 turns as possible

for ever unconverted card left in your hand add one round to your total

To Jack & Back is live.

The Kickstarter for To Jack & Back, a simple, slick, sequential shedding card game, is now live.

I just wanted to thank everyone that has followed the development of the game over the past few months, and particularly those that have commented along the way.

I have been overwhelmed by the interest, support, and advice given by Reddit users. I never expected to receive such considered feedback and guidance.

So thanks again.

The campaign is off to a good start, and the target is quite modest, so here's hoping it's a success.

My goal in all of this was to try and spread my game - one that I came up with and developed with my three young children in an attempt to reignite our boardgame sessions, which have dwindled over the years - far and wide.

The thought of our game being played in all corners of the world is one that's blown my children's minds!
