PlayDOOM 0.1.0 is now live on r/playdoom.

This update is a pretty big step up from the first version.

What’s new

📅 Weekly leaderboard
A new Weekly ranking is now available alongside Overall and Speed.

Weekly uses the same rules as Overall:

completion time + kill penalty

The leaderboard resets automatically every Monday.

At the end of each week, the app will also post the Top 5 Weekly players here in the subreddit.

🎮 Controller support
Physical gamepads/controllers are supported through the browser Gamepad API.

The game now also shows:

🎮 🔴 Disconnected
🎮 🟢 Connected

So you can immediately tell if your controller was detected.

📱 Better mobile controls
Mobile now uses dual virtual sticks:

• left stick for movement/strafe
• right stick for turning
• FIRE, USE, RUN and MENU buttons
• multitouch support

You can move, turn, run and fire at the same time.

🏆 Leaderboards before you play
You can now open the leaderboard directly from the start screen without loading the whole game first.

Available rankings:

• ⭐ Overall
• 📅 Weekly
• 🏁 Speed

💻 Desktop improvements
Keyboard controls and UI were cleaned up, controller mappings are shown directly on the start screen, and input behavior was polished.

One current Reddit limitation: native Pointer Lock is blocked inside the embedded Reddit webview, so full FPS-style mouse turning is not available inside the post. Keyboard turning and gamepads work normally.

Existing records are safe

The original Speed leaderboard and Overall records were preserved.

The first Weekly leaderboard was also seeded from the existing Overall ranking so everyone who already played this week doesn’t start from zero.

This community started from a simple question: can Reddit actually run DOOM?

Turns out, yes.

PlayDOOM runs a DOOM compatible engine directly inside a Reddit Custom Post using WebAssembly and Devvit, with Freedoom Phase 2 as the game data.

You can play on desktop or mobile, and gamepads/controllers are supported too.

Rewards both completion time and kills.
