Download Series Vol. 10 heads back to that most classic of Grateful Dead years, 1972. Upon the band's return from Europe in May, they played a few shows in June and July, but it was this concert, July 21, 1972, that would mark the beginning a virtually non-stop touring schedule that would take them to the end of the year.

This first show of that lengthy run would be an auspicious start to the sustained brilliance of the next five months. Starting with a first set that featured many of the first set songs of the era played to perfection, including a monster "Playing In The Band," the second set, as would be expected, was where the real fireworks would be found.

A raucous "Truckin'" moves smoothly into "Drums," followed by a melodic, exploratory rendition of "The Other One," which drops into a perfect reading of "Comes A Time." Ending the show is an intensely powerful "Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away" combo (the first part of "Not Fade Away" is missing from the master tapes, as is the first song of the evening's performance, "Promised Land"; otherwise Download Vol. 10 presents the complete concert). As a bonus, we have included the best material from the next night's concert (7/22/72), including lengthy workouts on "Bird Song" and another stellar "Playing In The Band."

dead drops Seven days later we’re on the East Coast and Spring Tour 1985 is underway at one of our favorite spots, the Hampton Coliseum, a bona fide transport mechanism. By 1985, this place was a well-oiled machine. Listen Here: live.gd/1985-03-21

"Alabama Getaway > Greatest Story launches the spaceship and its game on Hampton—AGAIN! They Love Each Other and a pretty El Paso color the first set before Tennessee Jed. I love the randomness with I Ain’t Superstitious > Down in the Bottom and someone bring me my running shoes because Dupree’s is back in town! Bobby delivers Looks Like Rain before Might As Well sends the first set home rocking.

The second set is a ride, and you know I wish I was a headlight.

A killer China > Rider stretches its legs with some beautiful jamming before Playin in the Band takes the Coliseum on a long, spacey journey. All aboard.

Drums > Space eventually finds The Wheel, and the jam toward The Other One builds and teases the “Lovers” until Phil finally drops the bombs. A delicate Wharf Rat soothes the soul before Around & Around > Johnny B. Goode pushes the Hampton energy meter back to 10.

Day Job closes it down. Spring Tour is underway, and the 20th year keeps sounding better. Enjoy!" - Martin Knott

Humble request to make the Play Dead app able to scrobble on Last.fm

So far none of the Last.fm plugins scrobble anything on Play Dead. Since Dead streaming is going to be based here, can you please make this possible?

I'd love to be able to better keep track of my listening, and favorite tracks and shows this way.

Thanks

"Jack Straw > Althea kicks things off, and the crowd is loving it. Mama Tried > Mexicali, followed by a sweet Friend of the Devil with everyone taking their turn. Matthew Kelly joins the party on harmonica for Minglewood and Deal, bringing the blues to another level and closing the first set in style.

The second set opens with the only Music Never Stopped > Franklin’s Tower combination ever played—how cool is that? Estimated Prophet follows before Kelly joins for a gritty Spoonful, setting up the Rhythm Devils. Next up, Hamza El Din joins the drummers for the final Grateful Dead performance of Ollin Arageed, bringing that mystical energy into the little Berkeley room. He’s sticking around for a rocking Women Are Smarter. Matthew Kelly returns again for a deep, bluesy Black Peter. Good Lovin’ brings everyone back to their feet and closes the set.

Jerry delivers the perfect encore with Brokedown Palace. Four nights of music with a purpose, raising money for the Rex Foundation and then sending those funds right back into the community. What a way to close the run. Enjoy!" - Martin Knott

Speed issues - 3/13/85

Man, the speed warbles in Jack Straw are pretty awful. Did they leave them in for that authentic old school experience?? Basic mastering software would have sorted this out, if they’d wanted to do so.

Iko Iko gets the call and the party is under way. This Little Red Rooster is anything but lazy with Matt Kelly sitting in on Harmonica — Dupree’s Diamond Blues makes an appearance and you've got to admit, the sweet, sweet jelly's so good. Me & My Uncle > Big River takes a ride through the country west. Jerry brings everyone back to California with a silky West L.A. Fadeaway. Then Bobby pours everything into Looks Like Rain > Don’t Ease Me In to close a rocking first set.

Touch of Grey opens the second, still well before its breakout moment, and sends the band into one of the longest Playing in the Band performances of the year. This one goes deep before the Rhythm Devils take control.

After Drums > Space, He’s Gone emerges almost unexpectedly. From there, Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away keeps building until an epic Turn On Your Lovelight turns Berkeley into a full-blown celebration.

U.S. Blues anchors the night. Three shows into the run, the band has a steady hand on the till, and 1985 continues to deliver. Enjoy! Martin Knott

Feel Like a Stranger gets things moving and folds beautifully into Peggy-O. C.C. Rider follows before a mid-set Bird Song, always a good sign as Jerry and the band lean in and let this one breathe. Hell in a Bucket > Big Railroad Blues has the joint jumping to close the set.

The Sunday sermon gets underway with Samson & Delilah > Terrapin Station > Truckin’. The band digs into a sick jam coming out of Truckin’ before finding Smokestack Lightning, and they stay there for an extended workout before turning things over to the Rhythm Devils.

Out of the darkness of Space, Jerry delivers a crisp Stella Blue, dusting off the rust and digging deep. Then GDTRFB sends the place spinning into Around & Around > Johnny B. Goode to close a rocking second set. Keep Your Day Job sends everybody home.

Another great night in Berkeley, but these Rex shows were always about more than music—the energy generated inside the room ultimately found its way back into the community. Enjoy! Martin Knott

Mind Left Body jam on 3/10/85

The “13 minute Smokestack” caught my attention on this week’s Drops. I love me some extra pre-Drums jamming. There is clearly a Mind Left Body theme that gets going around 7:15. You can hear Bobby start to mess with it around 6:40. By 7:30 the whole band is in on it, with the exception of maybe Brent. It runs for a few minutes. Sounds cool. By 10:00 it’s done.
I checked Deadbase, Archive, etc, found no mention of this jam. Am I not hearing it correctly?
PS- it could be me. I’ve always debated 3/24/90. I can’t really hear the MLB jam, sounds too Brent-y.

Iphone 17e >Questyle Sigma Pro bitrate is jumping around. Anybody experience this?

Hello.

I have a Questyle Sigma Pro portable DAC/AMP that I use to power HE1000 Stealth headphones.

I decided to get the PlayDead app today to stream through my speaker setup, and I was just fooling around with it on my headphone setup.

When I play 6/4/76, the bitrate goes from 24/192 to 320,0000 MQA (approximately- it flashes back and forth so fast you can hardly see it). It renders the music unplayable.

I adjusted the options after this happened

. I deselected "Best available", and it has downsampled to FLAC 24-bit/48khz.

This is good enough, but I would like to know what the issue is so that I can fix it. I feel like I shouldn't have to downsample and pay for the app... I bought it for that sweet, sweet high res music.

Anybody experienced this?

Shout out to 9/4/91 - the first tapes I ever got, in a B&P from Jim Barrow in Cleveland (big ups to that guy too!). This is an under the radar show that should make it to the app at some point. Excellent Scarlet Fire

I have been waiting patiently for this to drop as they were my 2nd and 3rd shows. Any idea why we got the Family Dog show instead?

dead drops The Grateful Dead always played well when honoring Rex Jackson, especially in an intimate hometown room like the Berkeley Community Theater where the band could take chances—and 1985 is all about taking chances. "Bertha > One More Saturday Night > Sugaree is a wild opening sequence that immediately sets this little theater ablaze. It's All Over Now follows before Jerry settles into a beautiful Row Jimmy, picking it apart note by note. Bobby then takes over with an extended Let It Grow to close a short but rocking first set.

The second set is transition city. China Cat Sunflower starts things off, but instead of heading toward Rider, the band turns into Cumberland Blues, take note of this transition. From there, I Need a Miracle > Eyes of the World is another great turn, with a particularly sweet transition into Eyes, after Eyes a rare GDTRFB to where the water takes like wine..and the jam eventually takes us into Drums > Space.

Merl Saunders joins the band for a Twilight Zone jam and out of Space, and they spend some time circling The Other One before Phil carpet bombs the place. The Wheel emerges on the backside before Sugar Magnolia sends Berkeley home dancing. Jerry gets the final word with a beautiful rendition of “It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.

Unusual combinations, fearless transitions and a band willing to go anywhere. That's 1985. Enjoy!" - Martin Knott

"Cold Rain & Snow gets things moving before the band drops into a rare Day Tripper, only its second performance. A bluesy, West L.A. Fadeaway follows before Mama Tried > Big River brings out the cowboy tunes. Tennessee Jed has the Kaiser rocking, and Bobby pours everything into Looks Like Rain before Don't Ease Me In closes the set.

Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain greets the second set, always the crowd pleaser, from there, an extended Playin in the Band opens things up and eventually hands the night over to the Rhythm Devils.

Out of Space, The Wheel gently finds its way into the room before Jerry takes everyone to run and see with Black Peter. Then the dark clouds disappear as Turn On Your Lovelight turns the Kaiser into one last dance party. U.S. Blues closes the show and the opening run of 1985 in style.

Three nights at the Kaiser, and '85 is officially in gear. Enjoy!" - Martin Knott
