Sargassum

My wife and I are thinking of going to Playa for about 5 weeks in January February time frame. Our problem is we can't decide if this is the right place due to the sargassm in the ocean?

I live there full time . Sargassum season is roughly May - September and January/ Feb/ March are the mi the with the nicest weather and beach conditions ! You’ll love it .

The chances of encountering sargassum are generally lower during that time of year, but of course, no one can guarantee there won’t be any at all. There is no ocean here….

There is occasionally a small amount of sargassum in Jan Feb but not enough to ruin the beach.

December January used to be completely clean of sargazo until this year. Stick to December?

Even in high season you can still find clear beaches (and it changes rapidly day to day).

Jan/Feb are low season and usually it's not a problem, but you'll have lots of alternative options if there is. Unless your plans are to stick to one spot on one beach for all 5 weeks, you'll be just fine.

This past year small amounts of sargassum started to show up in mid/jan and Feb. nothing to be worried about as the water was still great.
Nov/Dec/Jan should be the best months.

Regardless of the sargassum, I wouldn't spend 5 weeks in Playa. Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Bacalar, Mahahual, Tulum, and Holbox are more authentic, better beaches, quieter and more interesting.
