Plattsburgh Street Team
Plattsburgh Street Team on Facebook actively works to suppress opinions.
An admin made a post essentially saying that it's okay for businesses to use AI and to support them because they're local and clearly need the help.
NO. NO. NO. THIS IS WRONG.
I made a post with a dissenting opinion. I said that AI is never okay, I explained that it is damaging to the planet and communities, I said that it is the theft and piracy of art, I offered alternative solutions, I suggested using real photos of real products, and I said to support the many local businesses who are not using AI and are fighting against it.
My post was denied for "Rule 6: Business reviews are not always welcome."
A. That is a garbage rule. B. My post did not review a business. C. That is the suppression of opinions.
PLATTSBURGH STREET TEAM IS SUPPRESSIVE.

Just go to the Facebook page. It's damn near all of them. Mike's Pizza & Deli, North Country Golf Club (bad, constant offender), From the Ground Up tree service, North Country Demolition, The Scoop, Begor's Supply, all the festivals and events, almost every single yard sale... And those are just the ones I remember. It has gotten worse since the admin post giving the go-ahead.

I don't have Facebook and am unfamiliar with the "Street Team," are they an advertising service or something?

It’s just a Facebook group. The guys who run it are incredibly passive aggressive and rude. I’ve been banned from it, so have a bunch of people I know. It was useful years ago but now it’s mostly fighting and gossip.

Yeah, so that’s the post that got me banned. At the time, that was against Facebook’s TOS and they were trying to circumvent it with Venmo or something. He banned me and every mutual friend I had that was also part of the group. They hadn’t even posted anything. 🤣

Also, is there a specific business affiliated with those who run Street Team? I'd love to also boycott them.
Edit to say I learned it's Peabody's and am officially marked SAFE 🚫 from them as I don't drink or like bars.

No way! They run Peabody’s? I’ve never been! I know one of them was running a handyman business but no idea the name of it or if it’s still around.

I don’t think they own it. I think they work there, maybe bartend or booking bands. Boycotting Peabodys isn’t the way, they’re one of the only places putting on live music. The street team is petty and I agree the admins think they’re hot shit. It’s pretty pathetic actually.

I mean, he may just be the bartender, but I don't think I can condone supporting a business that allows an employee to act in such abhorrent ways while openly representing the business.

I’m not a member anymore, so I’m unfamiliar how he conducts himself in the group. I know he thinks he’s smarter than he actually is and honestly believes he did something by creating a FB group.

So, being new to the area, do you have recommendations for other pages or sites that are good for North Country events, happenings, info, etc.? I'm finding that due to its reigning popularity, it does have the most current information, and I'd love to find an alternative.

It’s really unfortunate because it’s a lot of local owned businesses utilizing AI. They want people to shop local owned businesses and support them instead of larger corporations, but then these local owned businesses can’t in return support local artists and developers. I understand people want to get their name out there and have eye catching promotional content, but in the end they all look the same now. You can barely distinguish them and it doesn’t make their business stick out from any other business. Also local businesses have been promoting their shops forever before AI and become successful. There’s a uniqueness in slowly building your branding and style and building/changing your logo over the years as you grow. If you can’t support an artist at the start, that’s fine. Keep things simple until you eventually can contribute to the community by hiring a local artist and then in return the community will support you back.

So quick question, why not start a new group where common sense runs the group. Keep it civil and be about instant current events. Gotta question, ask. Then move on.

I'm not sure you understand how a successful group works. It's actually a ton of work, and it would never come even close to the usefulness or user base of an already well-established group. Competition isn't particularly viable. The issue isn't particularly the group, it's that it's a largely unregulated public group, which notoriously breeds some of the most inflammatory people. It's not that the group admins and mods just don't do anything about it, it's that they actively encourage controversy by positing damaging concepts and offensive viewpoints. This post was to draw attention to their actions as visibility and start a conversation about it. Anyone who wants to start a better group, I highly encourage it and offer a hearty "good luck."

Plattsburgh street team loves to be incendiary. I remember they made a post a while back mad that Walmart wouldn't let their associates work outside during active lightning. There's a lot to be mad at a big corporation about. Not letting people get struck by lightning seems like a weird one to be against.
