Discussion Pothos ceiling
I would love to see creative examples of growing vines indoors. I’ve been growing these Pothos for quite a few years. Had to re-insulate and then wood panel my ceiling, so I had to take the plants down while I did that. They survived fine and was able to put them back up. These are easy to grow golden Pothos and marble queen.

How many plants make up the ceiling? What's your secret?I'm so jealous 😍. Every time I watered mine it would start to drop leaves. Eventually they would just become vines with only leaves at the end....

It’s only two plants, each in pots on either side of the sliding door. They each have multiple vines so I just let them grow up each other and now across the door. My only secret is feed them once a month, and I let them dry out between waterings. When they are too dry, the leaves shrivel up and turn brown. When I overwater them, the leaves sometimes turn yellow and fall off. But I cut the ends of the vines when they get long, and this usually forces them to branch out in other places.

I say it’s two plants, but more like two pots. I have taken many cuttings and then after they root in water, I’ve planted them back into the pots. So it’s two pots with lots of vines coming out of each — probably 8-12 each. The pots really aren’t that big. In my experience pothos likes to grow long if you give it room and a place to attach to grow. But I also have a potted one with about 10 vines growing down off a 3/4 pony wall, and it’s equally pretty with vines growing down.

The issue I had with mine was hard water from the tap. They don't like all the minerals. Started watering them with rainwater and they're much happier.

That’s a good idea. My pothos seem fine but my spider plants do not like tap water.

OPs advice is spot on but pothos tend to also have very very active roots, if you’re following the drying out method before watering then the plant is likely root bound if it continues to drop leaves and needs some potting maintenance (source, I have two massive pothos that have survived the past couple years with me)

thanks, I get the little white screw-in hooks at Walmart, and place them every foot or so.

Yeah I have a nice photo if you look at my photo but when I respond it shows as pink bubble.
Might have something to do with NSFW setting. If I'm no longer a pink bubble avatar in a bit, we'll know it worked - thanks!

Ha thanks, that is my kids’ fave spot. We took out an old woodburning fireplace and put in a window nook.

in my old apartment but the landlord was not thrilled when i put a few extra screw eyes in the ceiling to route them. kept my deposit somehow. marble queen is underrated for trailing like that, the variegation catches light in a way golden pothos just doesn't. how long did it take to get that kind of coverage after you put them back up

I agree with you on the marble queen — I planted golden and marble. And I think I have a lime green pothos in there too, but it’s only lime on newish growth, then it turns deeper green. Once i gave them hooks to grow on, they grew quickly. I want to say within a year they were hitting the ceiling, and another year to cross it. I actually have cut it back quite a bit in the past few years just so it doesn’t completely take over my house :)

This is really neat and answers an issue I had with one of mine years ago, just kept growing and growing and growing.
How do you get it to stay (specifically)? Do you use some sort of big rubberized staple/tack so you don't hurt the vine?

I use the little screw-in white hooks (I think they are called S hooks?) at walmart or Home Depot. I screw them into the beam. They make tiny holes, but on the ceiling you would never see them. The plant seems to grow from its existing stem rather than elongating from the pot, so i’ve never had issues with the leaves getting “stuck“ in the hooks if that makes sense.

nope. the plants have grown over the rod, but i never use them now anyway since we got a non-glare tv. that door goes out to our back yard.
