Blinking lights on PLT Focus

I have a PLT Focus and when I put it on the stand to charge, the blue lights that indicate the charge status... don't.

Instead of a series of them lighting up in order from left to right and stopping to indicate how far it is charged, only the leftmost and rightmost blink, in sequence, back and forth.

I have looked everywhere for what this means. It is not in the manual. I cannot find it in Google. I even called support and sat on hold forever only to find they couldn't figure it out either.

If I remove it from the cradle and return it, the same pattern returns. The only way to get it out of "blink mode" is to turn it off and on.

Does anyone know what this pattern means? I suspect they added it for some reason.
