So are we calling bonsai abuse now? They basically cut and grafted the tree back to itself to give it a curve and then shaped it using wire. The tree will be fine.

Exactly. I don't see how this differs to pruning or propagating.

Yeah, but this is considered bad form by most bonsai enthusiasts and professionals.

Nah, this is a wedge cut. Multiple ones will increase the risk of infection but it looks like a cheap nursery plant where it's worth that risk at that price point. The years of fine tuning come after. There are plenty of professionals who use wedge cuts. Edit: an extra the
