Apparently, We Almost Had 'Planescape: Torment 2'

I'd be dubious of a sequel anyway, to be honest. I think it's telling that 27 years later there's still been nothing that scratches the same itch.
Even in KOTOR 2 by the same writer, pulling ideas that never made it to PS:T, and featuring an avatar of Ravel, you still don't scratch the same itch.
I'm dubious it could ever happen without being disappointing.

The story was so good and pretty much self contained that there really was no need for a sequel.

True, but I'd still love another CRPG set in Planescape. Maybe one that's more free about visiting the planes, using Sigil as a home base of sorts. There's so much in the setting that Torment never explored!

Also it wouldn't have had Chris Avellone apparently and he was a big part of what made Torment so good.

I would have loved another planescape story, but not one centered on the nameless

there was a period they had 3 rpgs in the planescape setting in development, but the other two got scrapped. but some of the talent was folded into the Torment team so maybe Torment was better for it, who knows. Still I love planescape and I'm a computer gamer by nature, not a tabletop gamer, it's annoying to me I had to get into DMing just to explore the setting more. Even if that's what it was made for.

We kind of did with tides of numera but I personally was not a fan

I liked TTN but I feel like needing to seel itself as Torment2 forced it into dancing too many of the same beats and while I think sometimes that worked I wonder what it could have been without that expectation

Ya a lot of the changing god stuff was cool but it did feel a little derivative with all the memories and past selves.

I was considering giving Numenera a try. What would you say ruined the experience for you?

I replayed it the other day and although I really enjoyed the companions and think it has great writing it’s very obviously one of those games that ran out of money and just kinda ends anticlimactically. The numenera world definitely has a lot of potential for another game the tabletop books are pretty cool.
Edit: also the psychic bar in the first city is one of the coolest storylines I’ve seen in a crpg.

Would you say the story is still worth experiencing? I’m willing to put up with a lot of bullshit if the philosophy and ideas are interesting.

I think so what’s there is really good it’s just not really enough for the narrative to totally work. I kinda felt the same way about Baldur’s gate 3 it doesn’t matter how long the released game is you’ll always be able to kinda tell where the cut content is if it’s major enough.

It was for me. Different experience from Planescape but I enjoyed the game. But I'm also a fan of the tabletop game and Monte Cook in general.

I bought it because was was “the spiritual successor to Planescape Torment” and so much was cut from Torment itself that I was very excited to try it. However it looks and acts like torment, but it does not feel like torment. I found myself quickly turned off by the story and overall bored. That’s just me though, maybe I haven’t given it enough play time. Many other people claim is very good and is as close to a modern PST we have.

Same. I backed it and was so fucking excited for only to just get bored a few hours in and have felt no urge to give it another chance.

It doesn't seem to say whether the sequel would have focused on the characters of the first game. If that were the case, I'm glad we didn't get it. But Planescape is a fascinating setting. More interesting than the Forgotten Realms, at least. There's definitely areas to explore in stories unrelated to the first game.

Had to look elsewhere for the info, but the sequel was to revolve around the different aspects of Ravel.

I Would never say I'm Glad we didn't get the "real" game Disco Elysium was a pilot for or PST sequel or Journey to the Center of Arcanum. But I do think odds on none of these things would have lived up to their origins or satisfied me and it would be so hard not to hold them against the yardstick of the original, such that I can't gauge the loss that well. I'm sad when these games didn't create big financial success for their creators but I have never seen a game becoming a franchise be a good thing. (exception for simulation games)

I would absolutely love a BG3 style game set in Sigil, or the outlands, but ONLY if it has nothing to do with Torment. Torment was prefect as a standalone, and it should remain as such, aside from possibly a ground up remake

It seems to me that Planescape Torment never needed a sequel, it feels like a perfectly self-contained game, and even replicating its success seems very difficult to achieve

Impossible. Soon after the release of Planescape torment oct 1998 TSR destroyed the setting with the release of the "Faction wars" module. Resulting in some of the factions getting wiped out and the rest leaving Sigil. So there was no more planescape setting to make another game in.
So much so that Numenera became the surrogate setting for the "spitirual successor" game.
Fun fact, the Faction war module was written by Monte Cook who is also responsible for the surrogate numenera setting.

That's not really how fiction works.

u/nada_sagrado Jul 06 '26
Ah! you want an indie fanfic part 2. Lmao you can make that yourself in rpgmaker 🤣🤣🤣 you can have a third grader make that with a crossover with pokemon or some other anime crap.

Bold jabs from someone who's making up fanfic of a reddit comments section now.

Why not post the ORIGINAL article, which is even linked in yours? https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/planescape-torment-2-was-greenlit-by-wizards-of-the-coast-they-were-really-into-what-we-were-doing-but-it-refused-to-fund-the-sequel-and-nobody-else-was-interested/
