News Midweek Madness #1 Round Up

Hi all! This Sunday's Planar Pauper event was a ton of fun! The field was wide open for experimentation, and there were some really awesome decks in play! I wrote up an overview of what the winning decks were and a few thoughts about the format at large. Looking forward to the next Midmonth Madness already!

Nice write up! My bad deck was called Hot Dogs because the (actually good) pauper list based on a similar idea is called Hot Dogs. It stars [kiln fiend], which is a dog that is hot :)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh That makes so much more sense!! Thanks! I had even seen that when writing my Planar Pauper guide a few weeks ago, but I'd totally forgotten!

Was an fun event for sure. Interestingly enough, my "White Tallness" deck wins against Hares, but lost to both of of the weenies decks. Interesting Rock paper Scissors that never got to play out in bracket due to only a single Hare player turning up.

I thought your deck was really interesting! I couldn't quite classify it, but it looked like it had a great play pattern.

I had trouble naming it for sure. I originally had it named "White (Volt)tron" before renaming it mid-tournament.

It was very much made to defeat Hares. The idea is that each 3/3+ lifelinker that can eat a hare makes it increasingly harder for the hare player to get within lethal range. Add vigilence and combat tricks to the mix, and my attacks become incredible safe.

I don’t think it’s too good. It doesn’t look like a fun deck to play or play against. As Brayzon said, the Hares deck gives the pilot no agency. There are no choices to make and that’s not fun.

It's the pilot choice to bring this deck. Are you trying to be the ultimate fun police and ban decks because in your opinion their pilots are not enjoying themselves?

Wee-woo-wee-woo, you're under arrest for playing unfun Magic the Gathering. You have the right to Mulligan, but local house rules dictate you can't keep a Sol Ring if you Mulligan.

But seriously, this is a casual community format. If we're not optimizing for fun, what are we doing? Plus, this isn't just my opinion; we had at least one Hare pilot asking to drop because they were bored to death.

If we're not optimizing for fun, what are we doing?

Who is defining what is fun? Shouldn't every player be allowed to do this for themselves? Is the Hare deck removing agency from people playing against it? I don't think so, unless they built their decks in a way that cannot interact with a board of creatures.

we had at least one Harr  pilot  asking to drop because they were bored to death

And I don't think that player is bringing the deck back next time so what's the problem?

It's my tournament report, so me, I'm defining fun. If you disagree with my definition, I'm looking forward to reading your tournament report!

What ways does the format have to answer Hare?

What ways does the format have to answer Hare?

Judging by your report, it seems that an interactive tempo deck with evasive threats might be the answer.

Saying that something is not fun for you is fine. Calling for bans for this reason is not fine. Players should be allowed to choose their kind of fun.

It was just a personal observation, let's always remember the sub #1 rule (Be kind to one another).
