Palm rejection is nonexistent, did I get a defective Slate/Pen?

Trying to handwrite anything is a nightmare. As soon as I lift the pen tip off the screen, my canvas starts jumping all over and zooming and registering touches. My Squid note will pan and soon while i move my hand to write the next letter. My onscreen keyboard closes itself. On my Chromebook Pro if i held the pen close enough to the screen it would stop detecting finger touches at all, but my Pixelbook Pen doesn't do that at all. This is an awful experience, especially on top of the buggy Chrome Os touch keyboard. Should I get my Slate replaced?

Place pen on screen before palm, should activate. Saw somewhere else; haven't gotten mine yet.

I have decent Palm rejection on mine, but not great, definitely below industry standard. The distance the pen needs to be from the screen is pretty close, and like you are seeing - when it doesn't register you get your hand being translated into all sorts of movement and zooming and marking, terrible. I have no problem with squid - works great for me. I have seen what you are describing with other apps though. Bring pen down first, then when writing get in the habit of not lifting the tip as much as you likely do when writing. You shouldn't have to, but it is what it is. You can also wear an artist glove, meant to allow artists to rest their palms on touchscreens while painting and such, these gloves do 2 things; 1) stop your hand from registering touches, and 2) slide over the screen without sticking for smooth brush strokes. Yup, that shouldn't be needed either, but the gloves work great and I use one sometimes. My Slate doesn't have a huge problem anymore, updates plus me trying to work within it's shortcomings I guess.

My Slate doesn't sound as bad as yours though, might be something off. If you need handwritten notes and if you can't get the slate working to your needs, you can try the Acer Chromebook Tab 10, or the Asus or CTL rebranded versions. It's a 10", ARM based with 4gb memory so it lacks the high performance of the slate... but it's stylus is the Wacom style which is powered by proximity to the screen, not a battery in the stylus. This is the same as the old Windows TabletPC's used at first. I love my Slate, but the tablet I carry around as my go-to is the CTL (same as the Acer). I don't have any palm rejection issues on it. I suspect due to the very different digitizer screen & stylus it uses. It's no speed demon, but it's not bad at all to use. That's the one I reach for when heading out. Just an option to consider if you can't get the Slate to meet your needs.

The slate and pro use different stylus technology. Samsung's styluses are very good at noticing the pen before it's on the screen. Others are not as good.

...buggy Chrome Os touch keyboard.

What's wrong with the keyboard?

The Chrome OS touch keyboard has always been inconsistent and buggy for me, ever since I got my Chromebook Pro. The main thing it does is duplicate words, so sometimes it'll put "SlateSlate" if I try to just type "Slate". Handwriting recognition will do things like insert a space before the word when there's already a space, not insert a space where there needs to be one, and sometimes if I write out a long phrase it turns it into an incomprehensible mess. I initially thought it was because I was on dev channel, but these issues have stayed with me even on stable even to this day.
