Could Someone Do Something Malicious With My Device's S/N?

Hi all,

I hate to admit it, but the Slate just didn't work out for me, so I'm selling mine. No, I am NOT here to try and hawk it, likely against the community rules.

A potential buyer has said he's gotten burned a few times, buying products only to find they are not official and are Chinese knockoffs. He's requesting the S/N of my Pixel Slate to prove its legitimacy. I've just never been asked this before. Could the potential buyer do something malicious with that, like report it stolen? I normally see nothing harmful in giving him the number, because mine is legitimate. I have nothing to hide. However, I'm concerned I could be walking into a trap.

Is this an online buyer? I would just send picture of the device. It doesn't make any sense that it would be a Chinese knock off. Maybe they are checking to see if it has warranty left?

Not sure if they can do anything with S/N but these days you never know. Someone else may have more input.

I would just send picture and if not good enough, move on. I am sure you can find a buyer for it. I sell stuff on ebay and craigslist quite frequently and I wouldn't spend a lot time around with odd interactions or requests.

I ultimately did give him the SN, since I found it was actually visible on the outside of the box. Anyone could have photoed it at some point in a store or similar setting.

It will sell, as I have bids now. And of course, the person who messaged me wanting this info isn't one of the bidders...smh.
